A return from extinction

The engine of the Camaro roared as the car kicked sideways on the skid pad, tires screaming as they lost traction.  Deft handling of the throttle and quick hands on the wheel brought the csr back strait as it thundered down the road course into another corner. Smiling to himself, Reid McCael rowed the gears to keep the 700 supercharged beast in the power band, where she purred like a kitten.

The past few months had been grueling, finals for his criminal justice degree were over! Paper after paper and test after test were taken and passed, sometimes barely, but passed nonetheless. Today was the last one and with a passing grade, had submitted his application to the Texas Highway Patrol.

Now, he was blowing off steam. One pf the peope hed met in class told him about a road course that he could actually race at. They let anyone on as long as you could afford the entry fee and your car passed the technical inspection. For most cars that meant it had to have seatbelts and working brakes. For others it meant full roll cages, engine diapers and on-board fire extinguishers.

Reid's Camaro, a red, 1987 Z28 was somewhere in between. It was street legal, passed emissions but had 500hp more than what it came with stock. Gone was the old weak, 200hp, 305 cubic inch small block from the factory. In its place was a newer 416 cubic inch Ls engine, originally from a 2007 Corvette, modified with larger pistons, better flowing heads and a Magnuson supercharger to top it off.  Reid also installed a beefed up suspension, bigger brakes, frame strengthening braces and a few other modifications that car people would notice to properly handle the new horsepower.  He loved toying with thrle new Hellcats and Mustangs. Sire, some of them had the same power but his car was nearly a thousand pounds lighter. Their shocked faces as he sent them to gapplebees was always entertaining.the car was A labor of love that helped him get through college. With it he could get his mind off school and unwind. Finally, here at the track he could drive it like it was meant to be driven.

Later tonight he would meet some friends for dinner and see what the future holds. It could be months before heard back from the Highway Patrols academy so he needed to figure out what to do in the mean time. For now though, he needed to see if he could beat his personal best.

/ooc I will incorporate the dreams you mentioned in my next post unless you had something to interject

A return from extinction

Lightning flashed and thunder cracked as screams of the dying echoed across the field. Wiping a thick fluid from his eyes he opened them to see a heavy mist obscuring his vision as the rain started to fall.

The body was suddenly pulled off him, giving him a chance to breath. Rolling over he could see a hazy outline of his savior, it was huge, heavily muscled and, looked, it had a bulls head? He couldn't be sure as the creature disappeared into the mist as quickly as it had appeared.

He gagged as the smell of blood and death filled his nose. Scrambling to his feet knowing he had to get up or they would catch him.  Who would catch him? the thought ran through his mind even as he sprinted.

Heart pounding and chest heaving, he ran for all he was worth as shadows of great beasts appeared in the mist around him snarling and howling just out of sight. A great horn sounded in the distance and he felt...hope? He had to get to the horn, it was their last hope. Why? he remembered thinking. It was so clear a minute ago.

Suddenly one of the beasts slammed into him, sending him sprawling in the mud. Rolling fast the creature was on him in a flash, ripp8ng and tearing at his flesh. Pain erupted in his flank and shoulder as the as the beast howled, it's claws sinking deep into his flesh...

Reid woke with a start covered in sweat and breathing heavy. The dreams had started again, more vivid now than they were when they started, to the point he almost felt like he was in them.

Rolling out of bed, the activities of the night before coming back to him.  A mostly forgettable endeavor that wound up with too much to drink and nothing to show for it.

Hopping in the shower, he cleaned off, then dressed and sat down at his computer. He had nothing planned, school was out and he was waiting to hear from the State Police Academy, he finally opened up Call of Duty to pass some time. He wasn't particularly good at it but it was a good time waster until his physical and initial medical screening later in. The day down town.

/ooc,

So it's not "immediate", but it's definitely something that Reid has never experienced before, this, direct of a sensation as it were?  It's definitely made more of an impression than a waking dream right?

Sorry, just trying to get a feel for this new feeling/sensation he's experiencing.

A return from extinction

One thing about being from an affluent family is that you have a lot of time.  Reid didn't necessarily show off his wealth but there were hints here and there, mostly in the cars he drives and another being his apartment with a double garage in a nice part of Austin. He didn't need to get a job while waiting on the Academy Application but he was planning on doing as much interning and volunteering as he was able to take up the time if nothing else.

Gaming until he needed to go in for his physical and Dr. appointments related to his medical screening, he changed to something more work-related, a button-down shirt, khakis, and a nice pair of boots.  That's one thing he'll probably never outgrow, his love of cowboy boots. Topping it off with a black felt stetson, he picked up his keys, wallet, and phone and headed out.

Leaving his Camaro in the garage, he popped the lock on his other vehicle, a rather ordinary-looking Dodge Durango SRT. Black and silver with a red stripe on the hood, the only indication that it's the Hellcat version since he put regular Dodge Durango badges on it.

The drive across town was uneventful though Reid started having a nagging feeling that "something" was coming.  It wasn't anything concrete but it was there, like when you go back to a room because you thought you forgot something. It wasn't one of those "I've got a bad feeling about this" moments either that is gone the moment after it happens. The longer he drove, the longer he realized "it" was out there and it made him uncomfortable, like an itch he couldn't scratch.

The doctor's appointment was perfunctory in that baseline blood tests and an overall physical were done, standard stuff when you apply for any government position.  From there he went to meet some friends he met at school for lunch and was home for dinner and some "FBI" on TV in the background while studying for his Academy entrance exam.

That night, the same dreams of intense fighting came to him again. He was never able to see his attackers and it always ended the same, with him waking up in a fog wondering what the hell was happening.  The dreams were vivid, not like a dream but as if he was there.

A return from extinction

/ooc  Making some assumptions, I don't see where you really track the day/month/year anywhere. I am just sort of working on a day-to-day story for a few "days" in game like you mentioned.

-------------

Laying in bed, the dream still vivid in his mind's eye, Reid closed his eyes and tried to clear his head which didn't work as he'd intended.  Rather than clear his mind of visions he could not begin to fathom, his feelings turned toward that ever-present, "something" that was coming, the ever-present itch that seemed to have come out of nowhere that made him uncomfortable.  This "almost" itch that no scratching could get rid of seemed to be building, getting worse, or rather, more intense.

Finally getting up, he tossed on some gym clothes and headed down to get his morning workout in. Typical was a mile on the treadmill, 15 min on the stair climber, situps, pushups, mountain climbers, burpees, and then a round of weights.  Reid wasn't religious about lifting but he did want to keep in shape, enjoyed how it made him feel and liked looking good.

He had hoped it would help with the unease he had started feeling but if anything, it made it worse the harder he worked.  Eventually giving up, he showered and headed back to his apartment to change.  Today he was doing a ride-along with the sheriff's department and as it was Thursday, it was lady's night at the club so Reid and the boys had plans.

Arriving at the Sheriff's department, Reid met the actual Sherrif, Javier Salazar and was briefed on what to expect and then introduced to the deputy he'd be riding with, Sheriff's deputy Lacy McGuire. Lacy was a six-year veteran of the Sheriff's department and was one of the few female officers they employed. She was also an outreach officer and union representative.   Reid sat through their morning briefing with her and joined her at her squad car.  It was 0800 when they rolled out into the early Texas day that promised to be a hot one, forecast for no clouds and a high in the upper 90's.

Reid maintained small talk, asking details about protocols, response topics, and such as well as learning more about his officer escort as they continued their patrol ride-a-long.

The morning went by fairly uneventfully, about as he had expected and pretty much in line with what he had been briefed.  There was a routine traffic stop for speeding, a response to an accident, and a high-speed pursuit with full lights and sirens that was called off before they fully joined in as the suspects wrecked before Reid and his escort arrived.

Stopping for lunch at Pieus, a locally famous diner that was featured on the Food Network, he offered to by lunch. He won't be able to help himself, she's pretty, he's single, so why not take a shot?  He'd flirt with her over lunch unless he gets the feeling she's either not interested or otherwise...not interested.

I've been trying to write a bit more to have a good contact set up but I just can't.

I don't have enough information on what they (this mysterious group) are doing or where they like to start etc. to even begin make a first contact email.  Reid has zero desire to go looking for trouble so unless they find him or his ride-along officer gets a call to investigate something, I imagine it would be a while before he runs into them

I figure being out on a ride-a-long should be a good time to set up such a meeting?  I hope?

"OK, You get to stay in the car. she says seriously explaining the dangers they might face. A return from extinction

Zipping through traffic got Reid's heart pounding.  Lacy, as all deputies, had been through the police academy's defensive driving course as well as the state-sponsored driving school for officers and she took it to heart.  From their conversations at lunch, being an avid NASCAR fan might have also had something to do with it along with brothers who raced the local dirt tracks.

Slowing she turns her sirens and lights off about two blocks from their destination, coming to a stop outside or what looks to be a local laundromat.  Turning to Reid she shrugs. "Nothing immediately dangerous so you can come in and chat with the owner, They are the ones that called in according to dispatch."     Donning her sheriff's hat as she exits, Reid can't help but smile.  Lacy's confident, observant, and no-nonsense as they head toward the front door of the establishment, greeted by the owner just outside the front door. "Dispatch, K-338, show me arrived on scene." she called on her radio just before exiting the patrol car.
"Hello, I'm deputy Lacy McGuire, this is Reid, he's an observer riding with me today.  We are responding to the disturbance call?  What's going on?"

Reid looked around and he didn't see anything out of the ordinary but, things aren't always what they seem.

Without understanding the "why", he had a sinking feeling, that definitive, no kidding, verified, feeling, that they were looking for him.  He couldn't explain it, but there they were.

Reid will look over to Deputy McGuire and call her name until she looks at him. "Deputy, I think the source of the disturbance is up the road here a bit." he says, nodding up the road toward the group now looking his way, more than a little uneasy about the whole situation.

*she*, the Deputy is a woman.

Reid watches the group approach, still fighting the seething rage that's been welling up inside him since he saw them.  "We need to go!" he whispers harshly at the Deputy when her radio calls fall silent.  The edge in his voice was still very clear but that could be passed off unease for someone who was just surrounded by what amounts to a biker gang.

He had opened the door to the patrol car using it as a bit of a shield between himself and the gang.  IF this turned out bad, the Deputy was going to be in trouble for putting him, a civilian in harms way.  SHIT he cursed under his breath, he liked her and didn't want her to get in trouble but that might be too late as the group surrounded them.  Putting on the best possible smile he can despite the rage making it more of a sardonic smirk than disarming smile,  "Hey guys.  What can we do for ya?"

/ooc  Reid has the merit enchanting voice and a few bonuses for talking to people but I'm not sure if he has access to any gifts/merits or such yet.

Reid, normally a cool, calm. And collected person. Was struggling with the surge in this...unfamiliar rage that was building in him.  Sure, he'd been mad before, like when he came across Ali Withserspoon, his girlfriend in college being practicall raped at a fraternity party. She had maanaged to voice activate her phone and call Reid. Yes he wound up in the hospital and with a record because of how badly he beat two of the others there while breaking his ribs and hand but as theyvsay, you should jave seen the other guy!
That was an injustice that infuriated him bit this, and he could not explain why, was on a whole next level.

Staring at the speaker Reid smiled, a grim, tight lipped smile, his eyes grew hard and he stood up a little straighter. Reid had been in these spots before with his brothers and it always wound up in a scrum.

He glanced across the car at Lacy, she looked nervous as expected. The Deputies radio was dead but she still had her service weapon. He just hoped she knew they'd just reached the tipping point of this conversation especially since Reid was about to punch this dude and he still didn't understand why.

"Well, since you're not a doctor, judging by your clothes, law enforcement, because you didn't identify yourself, and because I just don't like your face, I dont believe we'll acquiesce to your request." "His smile remained tight lipped but hint of laughter in his voice belied the humor he felt at actually being able to quote a movie, and it came out as somethig of a condescending chuckle as he continued. Now, scoot along like a nice little boy before you all get trouble you don't want.

Reid was bluffing his ass off,  it was all bravado at this point because he know a fight was coming. He want much of a fighter himself, his brothers were but he'd been in a scrap or two. He also knew that if it came to it, he was going to the hospital  but he was talking the man talking to him with.

If he took him down, down, the others might back off enough for them to leave or get away. That's how bullies worked for the most part. Still, no need to not be civil until it wasn't time.

Reids heart was pounding in his chest and his beathing labored. He watched as the men circled the car and could tell the deputy had unholstered her pistol.

As the man spoke and approached Reid gasped for air as a ringing in his ears seemed to drown out all other sounds muting them like listening to someone try and talk underwater. Almost lost to his surroundings, he heard the Deputy's weapon fire.

The seething rage, barely kept in check tobthis point, roared now as he was physically threatened. Reid wasn't having it and like a damn had burst, a...something, Reid couldnt explain it otherwise, blew through his very being.

The men,  the deputy, the ride along, none of it mattered. The only thing that mattered was raw power that flooded through him ignighting every nerve and every fiber in his body.  Along with it came...something else.

Reids conscious mind saw it and if he felt fear it was quickly smashed by the blinding rage. Only the rage mattered, only the power that coursed up through his soul and the beast it brought with it. How dare they, HOW DARE THEY!Insignificant fleas!

Laughing almost maniacally at the pure pleasure and simultaneous exquisite pain of fire that burned through him, he was unnable to hold it back any longer, so he let go.

The power, Reid’s power, his birthright, long dormant, long thought lost, roared through his body. The rage burned his body away, a rage felt across millennia and that's when he felt the beast slam into him and roll under his skin where it “stretched”.  Reid arched his back and screamed.

The pain was exquisite and more intense than anything he’d ever felt as he felt his skin split and tear, his muscles shift and move, his bones elongate, break, and reform.  His muscles grew prodigiously as did his size.  His hands grew nails like claws and his feet reformed to hooves and horns sprouted from his head.  The pavement cracked under his fists as he pounded the ground in pain, Hulk smash style, as his body grew.  His scream became a bellow as the change ravaged his body.

It was over in seconds but to Reid it felt like an eternity.  Breathing heavily Reid stood, mind clouded by the rage he felt, the instinct to destroy that which threatened him.

Standing nearly 14 feet tall and heavily muscled with cloven feet and ivory horns protruding from its head, a creature of myth and legend stood where Reid once had, dwarfing those around him.

His eyes, red with rage burned with an inner fire that needed to be quenched. Roarig, bellowing a challenge, the bull-faced Minotaur turned his rage toward the man that threatened him...

Reid, lost to the change barely hears the man.  No one threatens him, no one. The fires of his rage were stoked and it will take more than words to put them out.

The man is close, they're surrounding the car, Reid and the deputy.  Reid is lost to hisbrage and only blood will sate it. He takes the first one he can grab and with a bellowing challenge turns him into mush.

/ooc  The fact that they didn't all go run screaming from the delirium means they're either Kinfolk or something else. Reid is lost in the rage of the first change and it's going to take quite an effort to calm him down.

Reid let's her run. In the fog of his rage, he wouldn't have been able to tell her from the others. Running on pure instinct, he recognizes she gsve up the fight and want a threat.

Its a fight or flight moment and Reid was gone, he saw red. Bellowing, he pounces on the leader,  his rage demanding that he smash anyone threatening him.

The fury of the frenzy fading, Reid looks around at the carnage in horror. As he's looking around, he doesn't "feel" right and looks at his hands, stained with blood...except they weren't his hands. His head felt heavier and as he looked at his hands, he saw his legs and feet...weren't.

The world swam as he looked around on unsteady feet...hooves? The bodies that surrounded him were a gruesome sight, literally smashed, torn and gored. Blood covered his now naked bodyand he started to remember.

Starting to say something, anything to the deputy, to diffuse the situation came out garbled.  Words that were barely formed from a mouth not designed for human speech.  He took an unsteady turn in her direction only to be met with her own terrified stare and the barrel of her pistol. Holding his hands in front in a "no, don't shoot" motion, he stared in horror as he saw, for the first time, his minotaur reflection in the cruiser's tinted side window.  That's when he panicked, turning to run, to get away, to get...anywhere.

by lips not suitable for human words. His head spinning, Reid looks around again before turning his gaze on the woman,"What am I?" He asks bewildered, looking down at himself still unsettled by her calm demeanor.

Reid is still braced,  ready for the inevitable attack he's sure will come.

Nodding at her explanation Reid decided he needed to trust someone and she hadn't attacked him yet.  "OK, you'll need to explain that that more later but what do I do now?" he asks, emphasizing his current form with his hands, his voice still a bit guttural because a bull's mouth is not designed for human speech. Almost without thought, the mental relaxation caused Reid to shift back, bones crunching and snapping, muscle and tendon warping and flexing as he returned to his homid form.

The exquisite pain and joy of it hit him all at once and he staggered for a moment before gathering his legs beneath him to steady himself.  He looked, wide-eyed at Yelena as he checked himself out, then was suddenly self conscious as he realized he was buck naked, his clothes having torn off when they couldn't accommodate his extra large minotaur frame.  "I'm um...ah, go8ng to need some new clothes apparently." Reid nods in appreciation as he wraps the towel around himself.  He was never one to be shy but for some reason, standing naked with a stranger just seemed, out of the ordinary.  When the vehicle arrives he joins her inside wondering where today is going to take him.  "You know, this was not what I was expecting to happen today."  He says thoughtfully as he watched the city roll past the windows before turning to take her in and really appraise her for the first time.

She's well dressed, russian, or at least that region based on her accent, and didn't run away from him.  "So tell me, how did you become my guardian angel and how did you find me?" he asks, probing for some information about his would-be savior.  For some reason he just found it highly unlikely she was just "hanging around" the block waiting for him.

"Theurges" Reid things to himself as he mulls over the term as they continue their ride.  Another word he's familiar with but missing context in how she uses it. "Well, regardless of how you found me, Thank you. I still don't understand what's going on but I feel you'll be filling me in once in a more secure location.  I'm going to have to figure out how to get my wallet back and some sort of explanation to the sheriff's office over what happened.  It's going to be all over that Deputies body and dash cams."    Reid still didn't know if he could trust her, she might be taking him to a secret government black-site for all he knew.  He's seen those movies and they never end well.

The ride has been uneventful to this point.  Reid had only ever been in one fight in his life and today he wiped out several people, he killed them, turned them into pasty bits on the street and gored one to death.  He felt them die in his hands and the worst part was, he didn't feel bad.  They attacked him so logically he shouldn't feel bad but he expected to feel something.   Now this, strange mysterious woman who knows more than she lets on.  It's like he fell right into the middle of a novel or action movie.

Reid will nod in thanks for the clothes then get dressed. He briefly thought of retreating to the bathroom to dress but he'd been naked around this woman for a while now and it just seemed silly to worry about modesty at this point.  Taking a look out the window. "Nice place." he says checking it out.

"So what now?  I was on an official police ride-a-long that went sideways with multiple casualties and I went missing, my clothes torn to pieces.  The police will be looking for me because it's going to be a huge headache for them if they "lose me". My family is affluent and didn't want me to be a cop in the first place.  They have connections that can put a lot of uncomfortable pressure (backtround of resources 5, Millions and millions--more for story purposes, this is what Reid would think) on the local departments.   I especially don't want the Deputy who was with me to get into any trouble."

Reid takes a deep breath and runs his hands through his hair trying to think.  Aside from his monster escapades, some real-world consequences are about to happen. "Do you have any ideas because I'm fresh out any that don't wind up with me in the loony bin." he asks.

Nodding "Thank you, so what happens now? The Sheriff's department will need to know I'm ok."  He took a deep breath.  "You brought me here, is it dangerous to go home?  My apartment I mean. I mean,my apartment here in town.  My family estate is over in the hill country so that's out there.  No one knows what happened, except the deputy and whoever sees that dashcam footage because I'm pretty sure I murdered that last guy so no one could have called anyone."

Reid still looked a little panicked when he said that, he killed people, hard, and he was starting to remember it.  What bothered him more was that he didn't feel bad about it.  There was something primal about how they fought and how he fought back.  It was deep inside him and it felt...good?

During his convsersation wtih the Sheriff's department, Reid will be honest about how they were attacked and that he panicked and ran after one of them started trying to grab him, tearing his clothes as they wrestled around.  He'll keep it as vague, yet probable, as possible about what happened and how he got away. He will ask if they found his keys and wallet and if they have, to go ahead and mail them via secure mail to his address.  He's fine and doesn't need any medical assitance, he just needs time to process.

Reid stumbles back a step, eyes wide, not quite believing what he just saw. "What," He stutters, eyes darting between the others in the room before settling on Yelena.  He then looks at his hands, then back to her. "You're like me, only different," he says after a few moments of his mind melting down at what he just saw. It was a statement, more than a question, understanding coming a bit more slowly.  Honestly, Reid didn't know what to think, other than knowing he was way out of his league. Feeling a bit defeated he sits down again, staring out the window of the hotel room.  "I feel like I'm in an episode of the Twilight Zone," he says shrugging. "This just doesn't feel real."

"Nothing is going to be the same, is it?"he asks more rhetorically than anything before looking up at her. "Those bikers were looking for me.  I thought they were just looking for a fight then they said they wanted my blood.  Does that mean anything?"

"Probably.  I have nothing else here to do and since you say going home isn't feasible, I guess I'm ready to meet these friends you mentioned wanted to meet me."

Truth be told, he didn't have anything he could do.  He didn't think they'd just let him walk out and after what happened on the street he wasn't sure he wanted to.  It was a small miracle that he wasn't more hurt.

I'll head over there now and clean it out.  I can get the important stuff AND then hire a cleaning company to "make it nice" as if I was still there.  No way a rich kid like me would clean his own room."  He'll chuckled at the last, saying it light heartedly trying to lighten the mood.

He considers things for a moment. "I will need to make some sort of excuse to my family as just up and moving would raise a lot of unnecessary questions." He pauses again.  "When do we need to leave?" he asks finally.

At the apartment he packs his travel bags and then calls the cleaning company that has been doing his service to come do an early cleaning.  "Hello, yes, I'd like you to stop by a little early this week, later today if possible.  I have some friends coming to visit and I'd like the place to look good for them and then another visit one tomorrow." (.ooc no trail to follow if the place is clean)

When he leaves the apartment, his laptop, luggage and then finally, a "burner" cell phone that he then copies over from his cell phone, contacts and numbers, photos.  he then mails his cell phone to his brother after calling his fraternity. "Hey guys, party at my place tonight, I'll be late. Keys are in their usual spot, lock up when you're done."  He wasn't going to be there at all but he party would obscure his movements.

Can he really trust these people?  The woman saved his bacon earlier, literally so he really doesn't have much choice.

Once that's all done, he's as ready to go as possible.

Re: A return from extinction

Once his apartment is in order, he will double check to make sure no evidence of where he's going in the house, he will leave the keys where his "friends" can find them.  The more people that use the house the harder it will be to track him.

He will return to the others. "I'm ready go to", he says, the entire process of getting ready taking no more than two days.

Reid nods. "I'm ready to go,' He says.  "Will we be using a private aircraft to avoid the publicity of the air ports?" he asks as he gets in the car.
