The Dead Master Thieves

After receiving a message, Nyke, Thymas and Valor arranged to meet with Kumal Fasst, a 'fence', to look at a stolen book he wanted to sell. They arranged to meet Kumal at the Thieves Sepulchre at midnight on the night of the new moon.

Earlier in the evening, the party met with Old Dickon, an 'armchair thief' responsible for updating maps of the city.   They gave him the details of the shark cult and underwater tunnel, and listened patiently while he grumbled as he sketched out the temple they described.  He speculated that Basharat must have made a fortune selling the temple to Hisvin the grain merchant, and suggested they watch how much Basharat gave to the Dead Master Thieves.  "He should give 10%.  It used to be 30%, but Krovas said he'd rather have that 20% for himself, and the rest happily follow where The Master leads.  The old ways have served us well in Thieves House for hundreds of years, but now Krovas changes too much.  Magicians were always our enemy, but now Krovas keeps that sorcerer, Hristomilo, to work black magic for him.  And he let's that red-haired wench in here against our oldest tradition.  Mark my words, lads, it'll bring ruin upon us all."  Dickon gave them 100 gold rilks to donate to the DMTs, muttering that his old knees can't do all those steps any more.

The Test of Doors used to be run by Bashabeck, a respected thief always seen wearing an orange turban, but he was killed during the shark cult riots.  That night the test was run by Basharat, with new bribery slots installed.  After the test they followed the candlelit path to pay homage the the DMTs and meet up with Kumal.  Basharat made an excuse but gave them 6 gems worth 50 gold rilks each to donate, from the profits of selling the shark temple.  A fat thief named Fissif was 'volunteered' by Krovas the Guildmaster to lead the ceremony.

Thymas pocketed Dickon's donation, as did most of the apprentices.  Fissif gave one iron tik and made a mockery of the ceremony.  The candles lighting the entrance passage were suddenly blown out just as Kumal was entering.  In the darkness, Kumal was murdered by an unknown assassin who tried to take the book, but Thymas beat him to it.  Fissif, moving faster than anyone would have thought possible for a man of his bulk, arrived and snatched the book from Thymas and flicked through it.  Some loose parchment leaves fell from the book.  Fissif read one that contained a task to recover the skull of a dead master thief named Omphal, then slid the loose pages back inside the book.  Thymas stole back the book, then the party chased the assassin through a maze of tunnels until traps and spiders ended the chase.
