Forgotten Curiosities

Along the northwestern edge of the French Quarter, a few blocks away from the park dedicated to the legendary jazz musician Louis Armstrong the is a two-story building with two smaller buildings butting up against it on either side. A sign hanging above the main entrance shows a rather humble-looking plain text sign that reads "Forgotten Curiosities: Antiques and More."

Upon walking through the front door, the musical sounds of the chimes mounted above the entryway serving to announce the arrival of a customer, people would be greater with the sight of what could at first be mistaken as a cluttered mess. Except for small pathways left open for people to walk around almost every square inch of the store is covered with a mismatch of odd items. Old wooden. tables, chairs, and sofas. Pristine roll up desks, a couple of grandfather clocks and a few armoires. Rolled up area rugs. Framed photographs and paintings mounted on the wall and leaning against racks that stand floor to ceiling covered in small figurines, well-preserved dolls, and beautiful dishware. It can appear a touch chaotic but anyone paying close attention might notice there is indeed a system in place. Everything is arranged for a reason, items strategically placed to stand next to things that complement each other to encourage multiple purchases.

One thing that stands out is the shiny suit of armor near the front door, a gleaming greatsword in its gauntlets with the point buried roughly an inch into the displays case to keep it from tipping over. Oddly enough, if one stands close to it for an extended period of time sometimes one can hear a low growl echoing from inside the empty helmet.

Near the back wall of the building stands a long glass display case that doubles as the main counter, part of the surface taken up by a cash register. Inside there are dozens of rings, necklaces, bracelets, watches and other jewelry laid out on small cushions or inside small cases. Behind the counter there are a few more paintings along with several blades hung vertically on the wall on small hooks; ornate looking knives with decorative handles, some sheathed swords and a handful of daggers. To the right of the counter is another rack of figurines, collectibles and less elegant looking jewelry with a small plaque at the top that reads "MADE BY LOCAL ARTISANS" in large block lettering. Tucked in the far corner there is a spiral staircase leading to the second floor, ending in a door that is often closed and locked tight.

It is a well-known secret in the supernatural community of New Orleans that if someone were to enter this store and ask for the owner of the "Veiled Curiosities" then there is more to be found and purchased here than just antiques.
