The End of the Journey

Hawksmoore lowered the bottle of rum, handing it with a bow to Liza as he answered McCurdy's question. "You have imperilled your soul, and taken on the greatest challenge of all," he replied. "We shall watch the ages of man go by, and be present at the end of the world.

Hornsby grinned a rogue's grin at Marianne. "Ah, Lass, how could I refuse ye, though ye spurned our accord back in Manaus ?"  he said, a twinkle in his remaining eye.  "Tis a spirit like Mary Read you have.  As for Basil, that evil old rat will be around and about - but unless he knows some heavy magic, he won't be shedding that new skin of his."  At this comment, Hawksmoore's eyes narrow, and narrow again as de Vega approaches, holding out a bottle of wine.

"I will be in Barcelona," de Vega said, with a formal bow, holding out the bottle to Hawksmoore. "If you would consider an attempt at apology."
"MMmmph," grunted Hawksmoore, who did not accept it. "Perhaps.  I've a journey first."  De Vega bowed again, and withdrew, to stride off into the jungle.

Sebastian then looked at Brother Clary.  "You have the Lupino Cross, Brother Clary.  Tis yours, for the span of your life, and may your years be many.  When you wish to set it aside, give it back to Gula; she will set it aside for the next holy one to carry.  It turns demons - so we'll thank 'ee well to travel with us, back to the city."

"And the two Scots will be wantin' some tutoring," Hornsby added. "They shall want to know some of our little tricks, and how to learn the ways of their new lives.  Tis a task we shall take on, betime.  But first, the Lady has asked to know of old Jonathan Hornsby....twill pass the time.  I was born in the year of the rise of the Tudors, mind ye, but far away from Bosworth Field, happily."

Sebastian Hawksmoore rolled his eyes. "He's told thee three lies in one breath, Miss; and now ye have made him want to blether !  'ere now - I mind me that doctor had a shovel with him.  We need to borrow it, right enough; and to take ourselves along a valley where emeralds can be found.  Emeralds have their uses."  He rummaged through Basil's abandoned pack, too, and found a flask that he filled with water from the fountain....and the map Basil Ringrose had made, that gave the shortcut path.
"The lad's got his ways," Hornsby said, with a rakehelly smirk at Marianne.  "Twill serve you better if I send thee sommat of me Captain's log, Miss ?"

Finally, pockets full of uncut emeralds, with gold clinking too (from an quickly unburied chest of pirate gold) - the travellers went back to the city.  In the early morning, just before, Manaus saw them arrive.  "Here our ways must part, for now," Hawksmoore said. "But they may well cross again, within the span of 40 years.  If we do not at last meet you here, we may meet you on the Path to the Fountain.  It will call to you, Mistress Waters and Mister McCurdy; it cannot be denied, yet make no error that to delay will cost you greatly."

"Gruber will find room for ye," Hornsby added to Marianne and Brother Clary, passing her a leather bag full of emeralds. "Tis Wednesday; he comes in about noontime on Wednesday. Time to bid you good-day, and fare-thee-well."  He jumped backwards, then, off the docks into the water; but it was a pink dolphin that jumped back out of the water, and then swam away.  Hawksmoore nodded, flipping up what remained of his tattered hood over his head; for an instant, Jack McCurdy saw a person he had not expected to see.  It was old, inkstained Brother Sebastian....or was it not ?  Then Hawksmoore jumped into the water, and was gone.  The sun rose, sending light spangling through high clouds, raising up a cloud of gemlike dragonflies from the surface of the water, with a sound like gentle laughter.
