Subject: Off we go..
The fire is stoked all night to allow a soft, gentle glow to fill the chamber in which you rest. Sleep comes to most of you quickly and your rest is long and deep and very gratifying. You awake to the sounds of the morning and the smells of food being prepared. Salt cured meats sizzle in several pans while the cauldron bubbles with a thick porridge of some sort. Fresh bread and honey sit next to the fire ring to stay warm and ready for consumption. A large pot of dark steaming beverage sends wisps of a pleasent aroma skyward which makes you lick your lips in anticipation.

Most of the party eats in silent reflection. The meal is delicious and quick. The pots and pans are cleaned and put away before you are able to finish your portions. The servants and porters have all the items at the ready and the litter bearers are waiting to accept their loads. Churisan brings the guard into order with Neshkriuma settling the rear guard into position. Within an hour of your rising, you find yourself once again on the road. The morning walk, with the sun low in the sky, is a beautiful, quiet stroll. It doesn't take long, however, before the sun begins to beat down on the uncovered Sakbe and the temperature starts to rise. Several large umbrellas are brought out and opened up over the party members. The guards and porters, servants and the like, are left to seek out what ever cover they can find. At mid-day your column seeks shade in one of the many towers that you have passed through on your path thus far. You have a short yet very welcomed lunch of dried meats, fruit, bread and water touched by citrus. By late afternoon and after several more hours of heated marching, Almodhim leaves her litter, with help from Adzul, who has been attending her all day. She walks strong and straight along side her litter with little sign of illness from the poison or injury from her battle. Ssrivan too, seems to be of lighter spirits and more active. He has had several conversations and is actively sitting up and engaging in some exercises that his lovely aide has prescribed.

By sunset, the party is ready for the day to end and camp is set up quickly. The meal is hot and well seasoned; the things this chef can produce out of a pot or two over an open fire certainly rivals many a clan house's best offerings. Once again, the night passes without incident and, once again, you are brought to your senses by the smells of breakfast and the sounds of nature.

Several hours of marching later, you arrive at another tower where you partake in a mid-day meal.

"Here is where we depart from the road, noble comrades," Orun says between bites. "As you can see, Sarku City is on the horizon and the smoky haze that hides her white wall is ample indication that the Festival of the Dead is well under way. According to Dlarumei, we should be only an hour away from an exit point and from there we have but a half-day's travel till we reach our contact, who will take us to the mouth of the underground pathways." Orun sits back, bites off another piece of dried meat and continues. "We should be prepared for encounters of a less than friendly nature, So everyone should stay mindful or our surroundings."

Subject: Ssrivan's Questions
"Dlarumei, would it be possible to examine the disks that control the tubeway carriages? I have had little opportunity to examine such in the past--and they are keys of a sort. It might be good if at least one other was familiar in their use in an emergency. My hands are finally regaining some of their feeling, as is my throat, though I suspect that the burr in my voice may be very long-lived."

He waits patiently for an answer and lies back in the comfortable lap of his serving girl as she feeds him tidbits of the mid-day meal.

"The tunnel entrances and approaches may have been trapped by the worshippers of Sarku to limit access. I hope our guide is very familiar with this area, as I don't think we would really like the kind of surprises such things produce."

Ssrivan grins as he captures another tidbit from the wriggling fingers in front of his face.

Subject: Asking Churisan
"Noble Warrior, I know that you and your party seek the Emerald Sphere of Sighs. If you have need of a warrior, I offer my services to you. I am indebted to you; your party saved me when most would have left me to die. If you have need of my sword, you have only to ask. I would be proud to fight by your side." Almodhim considers him for a moment. "Why do seek the Emerald Sphere of Sighs?"

Subject: Dlarumei's post
Dlarumei moves to Ssrivan and sits on her knees before him. She produces a small sack, from what appears to be nowhere, and opens it slowly. Cautiously, she slips her thumb and forefinger into the sack and removes a shiny, silver looking, disk. She is very cautious to hold it only by the edges, and with an almost reverent gesture, hands the disk to Ssrivan. "Your thinking is sound," Dlarumei says from behind her black lacquer mask. "It is foolish for only one of us to have position and knowledge of these. I can think of none other whom I should share this information than you. You have many talents in the area of keys and locks. You are, however, a little too tenacious for your own good sometimes." Her voice is light and has a hint of laughter behind it. "Please examine this disk and let me know what your thoughts are in regards to its use. It is inserted into a slot on the machine and that allows us to use the tunnel carriages. More than that, I am not sure. We have not yet figured out how to distinguish between the disks, so I carry eight different disks with me in hopes that one will operate the carriage when we arrive where it is to be located." She remains with Ssrivan and speaks with him further, discussing the item and sharing ideas.

Subject: Two cents
Neshkriuma seems interested in Ssrivan's conversation and moves closer.
"Is there no way to distinguish between the disks? It may be that two or more will operate the carriages, but be designed to send them to different locations, and what do we know of the state of repair of the tunnels. While the potential benefit of utilizing the tubeways are great, is not the risk at least as great? Would it not be just as secure, though much slower, to simply walk through the tunnel? What is our intelligence on this?"

From: Chúrisan Sóruna [2001-05-21 16:48:21]
Subject: Churisan replies to Almodhim
"A gracious offer, Warrior. But I'm sure one so valiant and noble as you must have other duties, posts no doubt of high responsibility. We could not presume to call you away. Your clan, whatever it might be, would surely miss you. And your comrades on the road, must they not be avenged?"

From: Chúrisan Sóruna [2001-05-21 16:53:07]
Subject: doubts
Later, Churisan joins Dlarumei, Ssrivan, and Neshkriuma: "More than that, what madness it is to go beneath the City of Sarku at any time, much less during a time of ritual celebration and sacrifice! It is well known that the great sepulchers and altars of the Lord of Worms are beneath the ground, guarded by the Walking Dead and hungry Worms. By taking this route we only go more directly to the copper knives of Sarku's priests!"

From: Ssrivan hiTlokhar [2001-05-21 18:00:06]
Subject: Tubeways and Sarku's Worms
"Interesting points you make on the perils of the Tsuru'um, however, anywhere near the city of Sarku would be a bad thing right about now, and the sooner we can get away from that nest of wormish things, the better. I would take my chances with the tubeways, as at least there the carriage will be sealed and moving at, hopefully, high speed if/when we encounter anything."

Ssrivan follows Dlarumei's example and handles the disks carefully by their edges, his bandages actually a bonus for once, as they cushion the disks better than mere flesh would. He scans the surfaces carefully for anything like markings or even changes in luster that might signify orientation. Every iota of information counts here.

"The only potential problem I see here is the destination data--obviously we must trust the gods to protect and guide us with a disk that has our desired destination available. The same goes for the tubeway tunnel itself--it will be whole if our mission is favored, otherwise, we will sacrifice ourselves to the glory of the attempt, a mission to which each of us dedicated ourselves long before we arrived at Monru. I strongly suggest we use the tubeways, as I have no desire to embrace the kiss of the worm yet, no matter how enticing it may seem to those who follow that path."

Ssrivan then continues his examinations carefully, getting out a couple of his instruments to measure the disk carefully (there may be irregularities too small for the eye to see, but which will show up when observed mechanically). Obviously, he takes great pains to ensure there is no possibility of marring any of the disk's surfaces. Of course, if there are minor random scratches present, that too is data for the mill.

He will repeat the procedures above for as many disks as Dlarumei allows him to examine.

"Most importantly, what are we to do with them in the tubeway carriage? It is obvious that they are keys of some kind, but what do we do with them and how do we activate the lock they fit within once we are there Dlarumei? Your input here would be most enlightening."

Ssrivan awaits the next series of answers with much bated breath as he looks to his servant girl for a quick bit of chumetl to slake his thirst and soothe his raw throat.

Subject: Dlarumei's actions.
Dlarumei looks up at Churisan and says, "Noble Churisan, as you know, the woods in this area are alive with all manner of Sarku worshiper. They may be off-shoots or sects which are not allowed into the inner circle. They too wish to honor their allegiances and truly have no consideration for convention nor do they pay attention to the selection rules for sacrifice. We have seen one such display just a few days ago, and Almodhim here," she points to the warrior priestess of the Red Sword Clan, "can attest to first hand knowledge of their intentions. While I agree with you about heading under the city at this particular time of year as being a dangerous thing to do. It has been explained to me that it is the most logical time to do so. When the hunter is hunting his house is empty save for a few small unimportant dwellers. As the festival is only now just starting, there is still a lot of "recruitment" going on. Much of their contingent are out and about. At least, that is the idea.

This tunnel is also much lower and more remote than most of the caverns where copper bladed worshipers should be calling to their god. The entrance where we are to descend into the underground has been long ago abandoned and should pose no threat. All of this will make it safer to travel through this area underground than above. Plus, the attack from above ground can come from many directions. Underground the attack is limited to only a few directions and I have some abilities to block some avenues permanently. After listening to a much longer explanation, which I shall not bore you with, I was convinced that this would indeed be a more advantageous path.

Therefore," She turns to Nesh. "I must agree with Ssrivan, Noble priest, there are chances we must take to complete our journey. This, I fear, is only the first."

She then fans out several disks and says. "Look here, my noble colleagues," she motions to Churisan and Nesh, "each disk has different runes on one side and nothing on the other. To use any of them is a gamble, as we know not what the runes say. This square shape symbol, for example," she holds up one of the disk, "This one generally opens the doors to the carriages, but not always. So, while it works on most carriages, I have no idea if it will open the door to the one carriage that we will hope to find. Each one of these disks has been proven to work in different carriages that we have tried them in. They don't all work in the same carriage. Luckily, we have never had an incident when inserting a wrong disk. If we put in a wrong disk, nothing happens. This is why I have been entrusted with the entire collection. The hope is that one of these disks will operated the carriage that we are to find. I would invite all of you, of higher learning, to examine these disks, if you wish, and add to our knowledge you interpretation."

Dlarumei then lays the disks out on a soft piece of fabric so that others may also examine them at will. Stepping away, she warns that they must be handled with the utmost caution, as Ssrivan has shown.

Subject: Shamed into action
"Most worthy Dlarumei," Nesh says, now somewhat apologetic, "in truth I do not question the quality of the intelligence you have gathered and your understanding of these disks is far beyond my own. Rather it is the words of Ssrivan that now shame me into action. I thought only of the difficulties we have faced so far, rather than the duty to which we have obliged ourselves and the glory and honor we seek for our clans and ourselves." He pauses for a moment, his eyes downcast. At last he looks up to meet the gaze of those assembled. "Please forgive me; of course I will go with you all. If it is the Weaver's intention to cut my thread from the skein of life, so be it. I only seek to ensure that whatever fate is to mine, it shall be glorious!"

Subject: You could learn a lot from a dummy.
Hrissu finishes chewing, then walks back
to a part of the wall he'd already counted. He bends down to examine a stone in the wall where the mortar is loose. He picks at it a little, trying to jiggle it loose.

Subject: acquiesence
[responding to Dlarumei] "Very well, into the dark we go. I too am resolved to die gloriously, but I intend to delay my glorious end for some time yet. As for these disk, and "carriages" in the Underworlds, I know nothing of..." he pauses for a moment "well perhaps I should look at them all the same."

Subject: From the corner of her eye
"NO!! STOP!!!"

Dlarumei shouts to Hrissu as she spins quickly on her heels and bolts to where he is fiddling with a stone in the wall of the Sakbe. Hrissu looks up with some astonishment as Dlarumei slams her hand down onto the center of the stone tile, a soft blue glow traces the outline of her fingers against the carved stone.

"My dear Priest," Dlarumei says with a breathy and somewhat nervous voice. "I am happy to see that you are an astute individual, but prying this stone lose will only cause you, and those around you, great harm. My apologies for my forceful behavior, noble priest of Dra, but this is a defensive device that I set here almost a year ago, to be of assistance for this trip we are on today. I am pleased that we have had no need to use it, and to have it go off now, would be a devastating mishap which could severely hamper our progress. May it please you that an explanation satisfy your search for knowledge here without a physical examination."

Subject: At a loss
Neshkriuma shakes his head and chuckles softly to himself, amused as ever with the followers of Mighty Dra the Uncaring. Their wisdom is great, but their sense of self-preservation is... how would one say... less well developed.

From: Hrissu hi Metumel [2001-05-29 10:37:16]
Subject: Who Knew?
"Noble Dlarumei, if I had known that you had been here a year ago, and knew our steps from the outset, I would have used more caution. No one more than I would know your ability to dispense death while dodging it's fangs yourself. It is my hope that the God-King, his name be blessed forever, already knows of and approves of your altering the roadway."

Hrissu stands up and brushes himself off, his smile bland and pleasant.

Subject: the disks
Churisan looks up from where he has knelt in front of Dlarumei's array of disks. He frowns briefly at the exchange between the singer and the sorceress, then turns back to the disks. "Ohe, Neshkriuma, I know nothing of these things, but the sword-demon (he taps the bronze sword at his side) says it knows somewhat. This one (he points to a disk with a solid square on one side) opens doors to the moving chambers of ordinary status. This one (he points to another with a symbol like this: ------ P------) opens the doors of chambers of exalted status. The others tell the chamber where to go, and how, and the demon does not know the destinations."

From: Neshkriuma hiKharsama [2001-05-30 09:21:18]
Subject: Oh well
"If there is no way to determine with confidence the destination information of the disks, we may have to put ourselves in the hands of Fate and think of it no more. If nothing else, let us concentrate on our arrival at the carriageway before we trouble ourselves over where that carriageway may take us."

From: Game Master [2001-05-31 14:12:02]
Subject: Dlarumei's actions

"Noble Hrissu," Dlarumei responds, "I apologize to you for not informing you of this attribute of our journey, however, it would take a long time to describe to you all of the preparations that have been made in advance of our travels. There is also the small, yet extremely important, issue of having our plans divulged to our enemies. Not that you would or could be accused of any such actions as you have always dealt with your principles is a very Lan fashion. All the noble assemblage here are viewed in the same light. But there are those who do not conduct themselves with your high standards, and it is these for whom some things are kept in secret. I will, however, try to inform you of any upcoming items or events which would be of interest to you or this noble party. But please allow me to harbor some things as secret to keep them from ears not deserving. Much time and effort has gone into such preparations, and I would hate for them to be for not." She bows deeply to the Noble Priest of the Golden Sunburst Clan, waiting for his acknowledgement before turning her attention back to the disks and what Churisan is saying.

Subject: Hrm.
"Dlarumei, you of unknown skills, you of undisclosed purposes, I am not offended, there will be no demand for Shamtla. I am disturbed, not by your caution or your preparation, but that this journey, all of our steps, were known in advance, even one year previous to this date. Did you also know who would be coming on this journey?"

From: Almodhim hi'Harisaya [2001-06-01 07:21:02]
Subject: Response to Churisan
"Honored Warrior, I thank you for your concern for my honor, and for my need for revenge. But, know this, my mission was given to me against my will, by my clan father. Out of respect for him, I did what I could to appease his wishes. I received notice that he had died while I and my party were traveling. And then we were attacked and were left as you saw us.

Know this also, I will exact my revenge, in my own time and season, and when it can be done with much thought and planning. Until that time, it is my wish to honor this party, this LIVING party. Is it not more wise to help the living in the now rather than the memory of the dead? It is my wish to travel with you and pay my life-debt."

From: Game Master [2001-06-01 14:08:23]
Subject: Dlarumei responds
"Noble Hrissu, singer of wonders songs, it is not now, not has it ever been, my intention to create a sense of disturbance in any of our parties members. I humbly apologize if my thoughtlessness towards you and the other party members, with regards to this incident, has caused doubts. Though I am sure that this journey will uncover many other disturbing things, I would like to remove my actions from that list.

Without going into long and drawn out detail, let me simply say that the path we are on is only one of many which were prepared for this journey. I have spent the last year creating many paths which travel in many directions. Some are only decoys, other are alternate routs, others yet, are fall back paths for emergencies. I have tried to make every possible consideration for this trip and for our safety. The wise ones have never tried to hide the fact that something has been planned, only what, where, when, and why have been kept well away from curious eyes and ears.

Not all is known in advance, noble priest of Dra, only the general location of things and the many possibilities. If one path proves to be too dangerous or false, we still have several options available to us. It also depends on what this collective feels is the best rout. When provided with several options, it will be this assemblage which will need to decide on the best course of action. No plan, no matter how well thought out, can ever supersede field observations, though some warriors, who follow directions to the letter of the law, might disagree.

As for knowing who would be coming on this journey, we knew what caliber of person we were in need of, but the choices were made by the wise ones. They alone chose those they needed based on criteria that only they are aware of. Our journey, though well planed, is still in the hands of the gods noble priest."

From: Ssrivan hiTlokhar [2001-06-03 15:25:08]
Subject: Ssrivan's Observations
SSrivan snorts with amusement at the thought of 'disturbing things encountered during our journey,' and looks ruefully at his still somewhat bandaged hands.

"As we were told back in Monru, preparations for this journey were made long ago so as to confuse and misdirect those who would have it fail. Here we have just one more proof of the thoroughness of that task. Thank you Dlarumei for your ready explanation. I, for one, am pleased with your attention to detail--but soon we will be outside the radius where such preparations could be easily placed, and once we are, we must know so as to be even more on the alert for potential problems."

Ssrivan returns to his careful examination of each of the disks, noting the meaning of the markings identified by Churisan carefully. He whispers something to his lissome attendant, who scurries off to hunt for some packed-away items. She soon returns with a small box, which SSrivan opens. He pulls a small, well wrapped object from it, removes the wrappings, and uses one of the revealed tools to slide carefully along the surface, looking for crevices too small for the eye to see. The tool is very smooth and appears designed for just this type of task. Ssrivan seems lost in concentration as the tool glides carefully over the surfaces of each of the disks, his lips pursed, and his hands steady as stone. He is obviously happy once more.

From: Hrissu hi Metumel [2001-06-05 10:04:54]
Subject: Spacey, but perhaps not incorrect.
"Well, in any case, Noble friends, the woods crawl with those who might wish to see us as sacrifice-worthy captives. And while I am flattered by all of the attention, and would do my best to be a worthy sacrifice indeed, I would prefer to continue writting this song in my head... until I can find a rhyme that matches, I must recommend that we be at our destination before the night falls."

Subject: and away they go
"Yes, further examination of the disks might best wait untill they are needed." Nesh readies his pack and has his men do the same. "Shall we?"

Subject: on the move again
"Yes, let's" says Chúrisan, ordering bearers and guards into motion.

Subject: Packing the disks
Ssrivan carefully wraps the disks in their cloths and returns them to Dlarumei.

"Thank you for giving us the opportunity to examine them. We will all benefit from it."

He then stretches and makes for his litter, handing the packet of odd tools to his assistant to stow away once more.

From: Almodhim hi'Harisaya [2001-06-07 10:24:48]
Subject: Getting Ready
Almodhim checks her pack and makes ready to leave. Belting her sword around her waist and slinging her pack, she moves toward Dlarumei. Under her breath, Almodhim asks "Why do we seek this Emerald Sphere of Sighs? Are there others who search for it as well? Are there enemies that will concern us on our travels?"

From: Game Master [2001-06-08 15:55:55]
Subject: Once more....
Dlarumei gingerly accepts the bundle from Ssrivan and, bowing slightly, turns and heads towards Almodhim. She begins speaking to Almodhim and points down the road where the two of them start walking. It is obvious that she will be bringing Almodhim up to date on the specifics of the plan.

Orun, who has been staring off over the forests from atop the perch of the Sakbe, breaks off his concentration, stoops and brings his gear to his shoulder. Normally a porter would carry the small back pack, but Orun flags him off to some other duty and slings his possessions onto his own back. As he scans the forming column you see a thin smile slice across his face. He is pleased. Pleased the the party is able to be ready to move so much more quickly. Each day the party becomes more and more accostumed to the routine. The litter bearers and servants are becoming more aware of each others responsibilities. They have learned to help each other and they have learned how to stay out of the way. The Guard operates tightly under Churisan's able hand. They are a quiet lot, always ready, ever attentive. These are serious men who keep their sense of duty balanced on a very high level. Neshkriuma's rear guard, while not so polished and disciplined, have come into their own under the stern hand of their leader. Neshkriuma has his work cut out for him, but thus far their response has been positive and progressive.

Orun turns and heads on down the road. Churisan signals the guard to advance and in a manner of seconds, the entire party is on the move. The sun is hot and the umbrellas supply limited shade. The breeze from earlier has died out and the moisture from the thick damp forest sod has made the humidity rise in the mid-afternoon heat. These few hours of travel are rather uncomfortable and most keep to themselves to save energy.

In the early evening the party comes to a guard tower and a ramp which descends to the forest below. Here the forest is thinner, a mixture tall trees and shorter shrubs with areas of grass and stone between them. There are three clear paths leading away from the bottom of the ramp and with no hesitation Dlarumei picks the middle one leading to the east, the party follows. The path turns into a road, not well maintained but passable, and the air picks up a slight breeze which softly caresses your face. But on that gentle breeze, mingling ever so slightly, is the unmistakable scent of carrion. The party stops to a raised hand and all search the air to find the odor.

Subject: ooc suggestions and questions
OOC: Kevin, given that it has been so long since we started this thing, a little overview/summary might be good for all of us. Maybe you could publicly post excerpts of Dlarumei's briefing to Almodhim. Also, since the Cast page descriptions are so brief, the players might want to post brief descriptions of their characters, so Almodhim knows who she is talking to. Finally, I don't think we've had a post from Deshnah since January. Has that player dropped? Is the character still with the party?

thanks, George

[ooc-Not to shirk any responsibilities as GM, Any who wish to refamiliarize themselves with the mission, and the like, are encouraged to, just as Almodhim was, head back to the archives and read the end of chapter 4 and then chapters 5 and 6. There is a lot of information there, as well as, some other interesting things that would be good to refamiliarize yourself with at this point. There is no way that a brief, or lengthy summary from the GM will be able to encompass all that is there. If there are specific questions I will be happy to respond to them as best I can.

I believe the brief description idea is a good one. Please send them to Almodhim via private posts and please send a cc: to the GM. There are also several of you who need to complete your character sheets that you have sent to me. Most of you have an extensive character sheet but there are some of the little things that I need some clarification on. You will also need a brief bio for whoever I find to take Deshnah's place.

Unfortunately, it appears that the player of that character is unable to continue. Deshnah is a great character and I would like to keep him in the group. I am, as GM, operating the character in a minimal manner to keep his talents in the party, but I would love some one else to take him over. Tell a friend, and have them contact me at my e-mail address (you should all still have that, I hope.) I hope that this will help.

Thanks George for bringing this up.

I will post within the next two days as soon as I work out a detail for the next post. :)

Have fun, Kevin

The party reassembles itself, guards at the ready, all with weapons and shields poised. The rest of the party has weapons drawn or spells in mind, even the porters and slaves have some sort of defensive item at their side, weather stick or stave, they will not be caught unawares. At Churisan's command the party lurches forward in a loud and obnoxious fashion. Just as you begin to march forward, there is a loud explosion and an anguished cry from many of the beast ahead.

"That would be the signal." Hrissu mentions, as though it is but a fleeting thought. "The Livyani priest and Deshnah have created a diversion to help us pass this area."

The parties pace quickens and soon you are passing the charred remains of some large beast and several (approx 8) Hyahyu'u. The other animals are scattered about in a frenzy, it is obvious that their collective organizational abilities have been disrupted for the moment, as they run around in circles trying to understand what has just happened. A pair who were closest to the road spy the group and dart, full speed with teeth barred, straight towards the litters and porters, which causes some worry on their behalf, as they are the least armed.

The two Hyahyu'u rush the middle of the group, teeth bared and rough, guttural sounds emanating from their throats as they approach the party. Though they have six legs, one of the beasts stumbles slightly, lets out a whine, and its head whips around to its side and desperately tries to tear the arrow, so neatly placed by Churisan behind the front shoulder, out of its side. The second beast continues forward, seemingly unconcerned by its brother's problems. While the first has been targeted by several other archers and lies, seemingly paralyzed, in the dirt of the roadway. The second beast stammers for a second when its intended target, Ssrivan and his aides, vanished into thin air, along with two guards caring halberds. All that is left in that area is Almodhim as she barrels down on the beast. The Hyahyu'u's momentary lapse of concentration is its undoing; its hesitation makes an opening from which it is unable to defend itself from Almodhim's attack. She leaps high over the beast's head and comes down hard in the middle of its back. When the beast turns its head to attack, she brings her sword down, strong and sharp, on the newly exposed neck of the creature. The cut is deep, and the Hyahyu'u slumps to the ground as though every ounce of life was instantaneously sucked from its being. Almodhim revels in the kill for a brief moment and then, spying another beast, rushes off to dispatch it.

A flash to the left causes you to glance in that direction where you see three of the creatures struggling against some sort of a web. You look back to Almodhim only to find her sprinting off towards another creature, leaving the second beast she had come in contact with in a bloody pool. Several arrows sail across the sky from the long bowmen in the rear party, finding unsuspecting targets in the distance. It has only taken a few minutes and the remaining Hyahyu'u are no longer among the living.

The tattooed priest and Deshnah emerge from the trees and approach Orun and Churisan. The priest bows low, and with a heavy accent says, "Oh noble ones, I must first apologize for my hasty actions. This one and I," he points to Deshnah, "were only seeking advantage from behind the creatures. If they were to attack, *then* we would act. Unfortunately the beasts had gathered themselves in a defensive posture when you started your arrival. I took that advantage to despatch a large number of the pack, which had gathered closely together to make way for the arrival of their brothers who would, by your mighty hands, follow shortly thereafter. I am sorry to disturb your peace, but I felt it best to do away with this collection, as they would surely follow us later, once they had become bored with this trifle." He then bows deeply and respectfully takes a step back.

From the back of the ranks, or more precisely from the part of the party that is no longer visible, you hear the chastisement of a female voice. " You were *NOT* to exercise your spell casting yet! What must I do to…………" A wry smile crosses Orun's face as he suppresses a slight chuckle.

Churisan responds brusquely to the Livyani:
"In my experience, well-fed Whoopers do not trouble themselves with bold and well-armed groups such as we, especially when they are outnumbered. Still, it was perhaps good for us to have a little shooting." Then he turns away, signaling to the bowmen to join him in retrieving their arrows if they can. "La, where we go there are no quartermasters." He checks on the other guards, then goes to fetch his own arrow, exchanging a few words with the bowmen, discussing the finer points of shots made and missed.

As he rejoins the group, Churisan salutes Almodhim, and turns to meet Neshkriuma. He replies to the battlemage: "I'm glad you approve of the arrangement. We seem to have reliable guardians, our patron has provided us well. And you are certainly right about the need for departure, all this carrion will soon draw more trouble. I have one item of business, and then we go."

He walks to Ssrivan's litter. He is not smiling. "Learned locksmith, in future, please do not make the guards vanish. We need them to protect the rest of the expedition. I don't know if you took them elsewhere, or merely hid them from sight, but either way they could not do their jobs properly. They are the barrier that protects our porters and supplies. If they are removed, or just not visible, our enemies will attack the undefended section with extra vigor."

Ssrivan's response to this latest admonishment bites as deeply as the complaint itself.

"Know that your guards were quite capable of continuing to defend themselves and the caravan--and at an extreme advantage. I chose to protect my entourage from harm when it became quite obvious your defensive actions were for naught. If it is wrong to protect the integrity of this group, than I shall refrain from doing so in future--and that price in lives shall lie at your august feet. You know the business of martial defense--I know the sorcerous arts. If you think me fool enough to endanger you by providing a more perfect defense at the point of greatest weakness, then you know not the quality of your tools or your companions."

"Now, shall I continue to provide aid where it is to greatest effect--or must I crawl to your side in the thick of battle to ask your permission?"

A visibly angered locksmith awaits his response.

Subject: guarding arrangements
OOC: I just realized that we may have a perception problem here. The way Kevin described the attacking pair of creatures, there was nothing between them and Ssrivan's entourage. According to the guard arrangement set up a while back, there should have been at least one or two guards in position to block the attacking beasts. The latter is the situation I had in mind when Churisan spoke to Ssrivan. My guess is that Jim didn't know there were guards there when Ssrivan cast his spell, or at least when Ssrivan made his disparaging remark about the defensive arrangements. In consequence of this I'm moderating Churisan's response considerably [grin].

As the group prepares to move again, here is the distribution of guards and warriors:

Orun and two spearmen (and Almodhim if it suits her) are on point, some 10-20 m ahead.

The first rank is three guards, pikemen on either side and a spearman in the middle.

Behind them, three heavy crossbowmen.

Behind them, Churisan on the right, a spearman in the middle, and archer on the left.

Close behind them (Chur will pace his rank to stay close) is Dlarumei, and probably other non-warrior characters (Ssrivan's litter and entourage? Hrissu? Adzul? Deshnah and the Livyani?) and two halberdiers.
Behind the priests and servants are the porters carrying goods, with two more halberdiers.

At the rear, Neshkriuma and his servant Ruqu, with two spearmen and two archers.

Churisan's reply to Ssrivan is unabashed:

"Indeed I do not know the quality of my companions, so I must risk belaboring the obvious. What sorcery you use to defend yourself and others is of course your own concern. But if the guards can't see themselves or each other, they cannot work together, and teamwork is fundamental to defense. Further, if beasts like Whoopers can't see the guards, they will not be deterred from attacking, perhaps in numbers larger than two men, even invisible men, can repel. Perhaps you will be able to keep these considerations in mind when you wield your powers in the future."

Subject: Let's get going.
It takes but a few quick moments to bring the party into motion with a bit of a quicker pace than before. The need to arrive at the destination before nightfall and the great desire to leave the gore and danger behind, prods the group to step a bit more lively. This roadway is elevated ever so slightly, and winds lazily through the thinning woods. The roadway is obviously raise to keep it from becoming a river in the rainy season, and the need for fuel in Sarku city would explain the reduction of the areas trees. The thinned forest makes it easier to see further back into the woods, yet most of the party is still on edge a bit as the sky begins to darken. The shadows lengthen and some of the less traveled porters begin to see things moving within the trees. A stern chiding from Nesh assures them that they have more to fear from him than they do from creatures that they are inventing in the shadows.

"Damn these Sarkuvian festivals and their need for wood!" Orun exclaims. "They have cleared my markings I am sure. This looks to be the area where we are to move off the road, but I can find none of the trees I marked."

"Perhaps if you would mark your path with more solid, less moveable, objects?" D points to a two-meter high obelisk of black onyx. "I believe you would be more likely to find them later and have less of a chance of them walking off on you."

Orun grunts his indignant reply and marches up to the stone. Looking around a bit he waves the party to follow him and starts off down a narrow trail. It is obvious by their faces that Churisan and Nesh are not pleased with this new pathway. It is getting dark and the party will be forced to march single file through much of what they can see ahead.

After an hour of marching the sun has gone and the moon lights the night sky quite well. It is a full moon and the lantern bearers have been instructed not to light the lanterns. "It is light enough to see," Orun said, "and I would hate to draw any unnecessary attention to ourselves by providing light which can be seen by others at great distances."

Soon thereafter the party arrives at a clearing where it appears that a large wall had collapsed. The rubble is at least 4m high and it seems to stretch on for quite some distance in either direction. Dlarumei breaks away from the halted party and starts searching through the piles of stone. The party stands in silence and soon she returns and guides them to a small opening in the stones. It is a short and crescent shaped opening, just large enough for a single person to fit through. On the other side of the stone is a lit lantern that Dlarumei had placed just inside the opening. It is obvious that she wishes the party pass through the opening and move into the cavern beyond.

From here there is about 200m of roughly carved pathway descending down to a large door of some sort. I have not passed this door and so, cannot tell you of what lies beyond it. My hope and prayer is that Ssrivan is able to open this door. Beyond it are the tube and the caravans which travel within, if the legends and reports are indeed true." She then turns her attentions to Ssrivan who is making his way through the split. It is obvious that she is concerned for him and moves to a vantage point where she could assist him if need be.

Orun has already passed through, though his size made it a tight fit, and had lit another lantern, which helps you to look further down into the hole.

Nesh and the rear guard stay alert and ever watchful of the area from whence you came. He will be sure to be the last person through the hole.

Finally he enters, followed by Neshkriuma and the rear guard.

Hrissu seems to be singing very softly as the party prepares to delve into the underworld. Is it the third comic stanza of the "Saga of the Foolish Tomb-Guard?" If you get close to hear, the singing stops, after all, that little ditty is far too crude for the refined ears of such high nobles. Surely it would never pass through the lips of Hrissu hiMetumel of the Golden Sunburst.
