Chapter 15 - What's Big, Green and Nasty?

Chapter 15 What’s Big, Green, and Nasty
Copyright © 2002 by the players of Emerald Sphere of Sighs.

From: Chúrisan Sóruna [2001-10-06 13:16:19]
Subject: safe havens
Churisan considers whether to move the party to the Livyani. If most of the group has already retreated off the sand and up in the passageway, he will not move them again. If they are still not at the passageway, then he will order them to join Neshkriuma.

From: Game Master [2001-10-08 23:00:59]
Subject: Safe? Havens?
It is a narrow passageway, and as orderly as those in charge would like to make the exodus, there is but a small handful of people who have actually made it up into the passageway and off the sand.

From: Chúrisan Sóruna [2001-10-09 15:42:46]
Subject: crowd control
Churisan jogs towards the passageway, calling to the guards to start redirecting the people still on the sand to Neshkriuma. He splits the group (with some misgivings), telling those in the passageway to stay there, and those in the open to move to the dry sand (including those carrying Orun and the other casualties). For now Churisan stays at the mouth of the passageway.

Subject: Revealed
Ssrivans orders are followed to the letter and the slave lines up the key to the holes in the bottom of the pillar. While he is waiting for the pillar to descend low enough for him to reach the lock the rest of the party is moving off to the their prospective safe areas. About one third of the party (mostly porters and the like) are slowly moving their way up the narrow passageway. The rest of the party have crossed over to the patch of dry sand that the Livyani priest has created. All but Hrissu who is singing at the top of his lungs, "Inestimable Call to Tuleng at Midnight" a much louder and more feverent rendition than previously heard by most, but recognizable and poignant none the less. He has been left standing between the two illuminated pillars facing the lone slave who is prepared for his assigned task.

The slave, strong in his resolve, stands in the shadow of the descending pillar, arms stretched above his head holding the "U" shaped key, waiting for the right moment. At the peak of the fifth stanza in Hrissu's song the slave makes his move. He jumps up and allows the key to be pulled into the lock with a heavy magnetic thud. Letting go quickly and dropping back to the sand, he smiles as he has, once again, cheated the shock that accompanies the completion of his task. His smile is a bit premature for as he scrambles to clear the descending pillar, there is a loud sound of rushing air and the pillar slams into the sand like a staff being rammed into the chest of an adversary sending a shockwave of thunder through the floor. It hits so hard that several of the party members are knocked from their feet and a curious ripple is seen traveling through the sand throughout the cavern. The slave that was beneath the pillar is gone, not seen nor heard, a sacrifice to some unknown god, his blood fueling the brilliance that follows. The four copper prongs that protruded from the bottom of the pillar are driven deep into the sand and this third pillar lights up in brilliant blue.

This brilliance is carried to the sand in the form of streaks of lightning that dance around the base of the pillar. Under the sand, a blue glow radiates out from beneath the pillar and spreads out over the cavern floor where small pockets of blue lightning shoot up out through the sand in several places like little geysers. Yet the area around the Livyani priest and Hrissu seems to be unaffected by this fascinating light show. The cavern lights up in brilliant blue as the sand erupts throughout the whole area. The sand, being thrown upwards of two meters in the air, sparkles with little sparks of light throughout and there's a smell reminiscent of burning swamp grass that fills the air. In the background there is the sound of a deep and pain filled moan or yowl that echoes for several minutes and then slowly dies down into a whimper that trails off to silence once again. Your eyes catch the few last flashes of lightning type lights as they dance over the floor in the far end of the cavern. It is at this moment that you realize that you can see the cavern in its entirety.

The cavern is magnificent! The blue, web-like lights, which cover every square millimeter of the ceiling, bring an exquisite feel to this underground sculpture. Looking up, it is almost as though you are gazing into the night sky of some foreign land. Watching the lights pulse like heavenly bodies your eyes stare in amazement picking out shapes and watching the flow of the light as it streams through the vein-like tracks, all reminiscent of water flowing down hundreds of rivers that you can gaze down upon from on high. The pure white sand at your feet reflects the azure back up skyward, and fills the air with hundreds of tiny beams of light shooting in all directions at once. The majestic carved pillars glow of emerald and sapphire and help to enhance the illuminessance of the cavern. Their light is steady and sure and at just the proper amplitude to create helpful light without overpowering the luster of the stones or blinding those who travel through the cavern.

An elegant gray-green stone bridge crosses over a steaming chasm and is met by a blue stone path leading to white marble stairs. The stairs mount slightly between two large stone beasts and ascend to a landing above where two large shining metal doors stand side by side. It seems, as you check the party members, that there are only two causalities. One; the slave who was stomped into the ground and, two; whatever it was that lurked in the sand.

From: Game Master [2001-10-22 10:43:06]
Subject: what's that
Off in the distance, back by the steaming canal, you can see a figure of a man descending from far up in the ceiling. Partly repelling from a line of some sort and then hand over hand down the rest of the way down the side of one of the huge pillars. He is still some 500m off in the distance, so it is hard to make out any details.

From: Ssrivan hiTlokhar [2001-10-24 17:52:25]
Subject: Meetings in the Glittering Palace
"It appears we are not alone here folks. Shall we advance to meet this one before he has a chance to hide here in the cavern's depths? It appears those doors are the path we want anyways--and the sands seem to be free of their earlier menace, though for how long, I give no guarantees. I would suspect for at least as long as these wonderful lights last though. Note also that this opening has probably sent a warning to anyone who might have been monitoring this place, so speed is once more of the essence."

Ssrivan then awaits the responses of his companions as he continues to study the pillars and the rest of the revealed cavern in the now oh-so-useful light.

Subject: a quich nod and away
Listening to Ssrivan, Deshnah gives a quick nod and casts about him for a way to move across the cavern towards the liquid pool without coming close to the advancing figure.

Subject: Advance
Neshkriuma also nods at the conversation taking place. He then briefly speaks to Ssrivan. The better part of defense being a good facade, he commences a slow walk toward the stranger, hands empty but ready, showing neither fear nor aggression.

Subject: Cavern games
Ssrivan talks softly with the others near him for a few moments and then returns to his examination of the cave while they go about their business. This place obviously fascinates the locksmith, and he is loathe to leave without at least attempting a proper assessment of it.

Subject: regrouping
Churisan and the others at the passageway watched the illumination of the cavern in awe. They waited and watched the rest of the party, and as the others began to move again, Churisan got his group going too. They walked quickly in the blue light, still a bit uncertain of the footing, heading for the rest of the party.

Subject: Towards the chasm
Slowly ensuring he creates the smllest target to the advancing figure he slides slowly towards the chasm which has appeared replacing the previously liquid pools.
He gives a nod to his two companions who follow at a short distance. Checking their location and progress

From: Game Master [2001-10-30 12:46:33]
Subject: Revelations
The cavern is so awe inspiring that many of the slaves and porters are caught up in the visual and don't even notice Deshnah walking away. Dlarumei and Nesh follow him, a few paces behind, as he heads toward the figure who has descended from the ceiling. Orun stands again to try out his feet after Adzul has doctored them back to their previous healthy status. Though his spells of healing have been less that powerful. Much more attention has been given to the concentration to Devine his healing powers as is normal.
Many of the party notice a warming sensation emanating from he pillar next to where the majority of the group is gathered around the Livyani priest. He himself has stopped his chanting and is taking a moment to gaze at the wonder of the cavern reveled.

Churisan orders several guards, including a couple of crossbowmen, to hurry up and join Neshkriuma. They're to wait on either side of him, bows ready.

Churisan himself goes to Adzul and speaks quietly to him.

Neshkriuma can be seen briefly and quietly instructing the crossbowmen in their duties. He motions for them to take positions flanking the group. They continue to slowly follow with bows unslung but bolts stored away.

Subject: From on high
The group watches as Deshnah heads toward the figure that has reached the ground from his perch high up in the rafters. He is followed by Neshkriuma and Dlarumei, about five paces back, several guards sent by Churisan have taken up strategic positions behind them and their pace is measured and cautious. Ssrivan is examining one of the pillars, as the rest of the party is busy collecting itself and reorganizing.

"It appears this place was intended to be a pleasant place for those who knew its secrets. These pillars will slowly warm this place to a most comfortable state."

Ssrivan then continues his examination of the rest of this interesting place.

From: Hrissu hi Metumel [2001-11-05 16:09:11]
Subject: Satisfied.
As the song ends, Hrissu smiles, satisfied that what will happen has happened. He is drenched with sweat and looks very red, but brings his ragged breathing under control with a few basic excercises.

Subject: in the ravine
Churisan and Adzul have a brief and quiet conversation, and then Churisan orders a couple of porters to join him as he approaches the chasm where the water had been, and looks down in. He seems to have left the approaching person to Deshnah and Neshkriuma's tender mercies.

From: Game Master [2001-11-05 22:15:10]
Subject: Ravine gazing interruptus.
The party watches as Deshnah, Neshkriuma and Dlarumei approach the man who is walking towards them and you can see them having a conversation. You are momentarily distracted as Churisan and Adzul head out with a few porters towards the caverns chasm. You are even more distracted by the dizzy swaying and painful looking hunching over that Churisan falls into when they are but about half way to the chasms edge. (<-- Good description there I'll tell ya, ah, it's late, I'll let it go). You watch as the bronze sword at Churisan's side slips away and turns to a pool of liquid silver at his feet. Even more disturbing, the Livyani priest who was sitting on the sand in front of the party, just a second ago, is now standing next to Churisan and conversing. You see him squat down next to the pool of liquid silver, study it for a moment, and then look up a Churisan.

From: Chúrisan Sóruna [2001-11-07 18:44:52]
Subject: stepping away
"No!" Churisans's refusal was audible even to those some distance away. He was unstrapping his helmet as he spoke (and continued in a lower tone so, those farther away may not get all of this) "Indeed I would mind. I have encountered Livyani demon tricks before, and you may not use them here. Bah! We don't even know your name, or how a Shadow Lover like you came to be on this journey." He used his helmet to scoop up the quivering liquid silver, and starting walking quickly towards the cavern entrance. "I will return shortly," Churisan said as he walked away. "Adzul, you should search in the chasm."

From: Game Master [2001-11-08 11:34:43]
Subject: Stepping away cont...
The Livyani Priest stands slowly at Churisan's out-burst. From the groups vantage point they hear nothing from the Livyani and the Priest makes no challenge nor does he try to refute any of the comments. He simply stands there and looks at Churisan until he walks towards the caverns entrance.

Subject: Scanning the cave
Deshnah seems to have tired of inspecting the archer from a distance. Out of deference to rank and honour Desh waits for his colleagues to cotinue the diplomatic exchange, instead he takes interest in the effect of the Chasm on Churisan, and starts to wander across to that area.

From: Game Master [2001-12-05 10:48:41]
Subject: Recap
Due to site technical problems we have been out for a few weeks. Now that things are better, let's get caught up.

Let us recap on where we are and what is happening.
There is a person who has descended from high in the ceiling who has been met by Dlarumei, Deshnah and Neshkriuma who are being backed up by 5-armed guards. They have been in conversation for a few moments and all seems amenable.

Churisan and the Livyani priest have had a disagreement, to put it lightly, and Churisan has ventured off into the corridor that you all entered the cavern through. He did so after scooping up the liquid that once was his bronze sword.

Adzul is still on his way to the chasm and Deshnah is now also underway to the chasm to investigate as well.

Hrissu is still standing by the large third pillar that descended to the floor, recouping from his vocalizations and enjoying some dried fruit and some tea that a slave has made for him.

Ssrivan continues his examination of the rest of the cavern, focusing on the pillars and the lights that emanate from within them.

Almodhim, with a bit of a panicked look on her face, obviously not liking being underground, is patiently waiting for the next order so she can do something to take her mind off of the tons of earth above her head.

Orun is trying out his tender feet and getting the slaves and porters back into some sort of order so that they are ready to move when the party presses on.

Subject: Take the fashion risk...
Neshkriuma is seen speaking aside, in lowered tones, to Dlarumei, Deshnah and back to Almodhim. He is then seen to again step slowly with open hands toward the stranger. In a clear voice, hopefully audible by all around, he speaks:

"Welcome, Urutlen Utu-Tengmai, of Sakatis, to our midst. I and my friends intend you no harm. We understand your intentions towards us are not violent and we would like to make your esteemed acquaintance. If you are responsible for all these eyes so recently put out, I believe we will profit by journeying together."

From: Urutlen Utu-Tengmai [2001-12-11 21:59:47]
Subject: Okie-Dokie
(To Nesh, but so all in proximity can hear) I would be honored to accompany your party and yes I am the one who had to put down all of those priests. Your reason for being here is of no concern to me at this time. You can give me the information you feel I need when the time comes. I am a merchant by trade. Perhaps that skill may be of some use at some point. I am somewhat handy with a bow as well. Just let me know what the plan is and I will be of service.

(Urutlen bows a modest bow) If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I would be pleased to learn all of your names when the time is right. Let us press on whenever you all are ready.

Subject: Leaving on a jet plane
OOC: I am leaving for vacation tomorrow morning. I,m not sure about my computer access while I'm away. I'll be back late New Year's day. Kev, feel free to keep Urutlen moving along while I'm away. Happy Holidays to all!!

From: Game Master [2001-12-18 18:38:37]
Subject: Choices
It seems that there are at least three and possible even more of our members who will be shortly, or who have already, left Tekumel for the holiday season. The nexus points are truly busy this time of year. This brings me to a question that I feel compelled to ask. Would it be in our best interests to rest for a few weeks while some of our compatriots enjoy various feastings and the like and to do so our selves without care of posting? Or is it in our best interest to continue on with our campaign and simply drag those players with us who are on different worlds? I have permission from them to play their characters as I see fit. I for one (as the GM) prefer neither idea over the other. I wish to make this game as friendly and easy as possible while keeping the focus on what is at hand, mainly playing the game and keeping it moving. So, in the interest of diplomacy, I turn to you, my loyal and trusted players, to make your voices known and tell me what it is that you would prefer.
A) To pause for a few weeks, probably till after the first of January, or ….
B) To continue marching onward with absent players in tow.

Please note that most of the players that are off and away for the holidays have told me that they will try and access the game while away, but are unsure of their ability to do so based on what will be available to them on their trips.

I would appreciate an A or B vote from all of you, sent via private post, and then I can make a ruling based on a simple majority.
Please do not follow my example and tell me that either solution makes you happy. While that may be true, it will not help me in tallying the votes.
Thank you for your support and quick response.
Kevin

Subject: Stroll along
Orun, eager to try out his healed feet, strolls gingerly towards the newcomer. You notice that the impressions left by his feet as he walks fill in behind him, leaving no trace of the path he has walked. You look around and notice that there are no tracks at all. After all that has transpired in this cavern and all the scampering about, there is no evidence that anyone has ever set foot within this mighty hall.

As Orun arrives to the area where the Nesh and Dlarumei stand with the new comer he exclaims in a loud and deep voice, taking full advantage of the acoustics in the cavern.

"I am Orun Vu'urtesh of the Blade Raised High Clan. Temple Guard in Katalal, and Kasi for the legion of the Scarlet Planet of Knives. I am also one of those who share in the leadership of this collection of esteemed persons. As you are without fellow travelers it would be an honor for us if, some one of your obvious talents, would join us in our travel".
Orun bows slightly and looks to the archer Urutlen Utu-Tengmai for his response.

Subject: Oh... THAT Urutlen!
Hrissu blinks, moving finally after what seems like hours of stillness.

"Urutlen Utu-Tengmai you say? Most interesting..."

He walks back to the assembled party, a smile lighting up his face like a break of sun after a storm.

"Urutlen Utu-Tengmai, you who are known for your prowess and shrewdness, I have seen you in Beautious Jakalla, wooing her with your skill. Urutlen Utu-Tengmai, your deeds are well known! I am Hrissu hiMetumel, of the Golden Sunburst Clan."

He speaks just a tad more respectfully than you would expect a noble and priest to speak to a merchant. Not so much more as to cause a scandal, but enough so the true admiration shines through.

(bowing to Orun) I am honored to join this party and am at your service. I would suggest that we move along, this room, I'm sure, already has made us wary of things to come.

(to Deshnah:) My bow is at your service. Anything I can do to help this party would be my pleasure.

(Bows low to Hrissu:) Sir, I hope I am worthy of your compliment. I only wish we had met earlier, under less stressful circumstances. Perhaps after all this is behind us, we can look back to Jakalla and share stories together.

(To entire party:) "I hope you all appreciate what this noble priest has done for you. We are all in his debt. Let us all hope that we get an opportunity to return the favor somehow."

"Yes", Orun speaks to Urutlen Utu-Tengmai, "Hrissu hi Metumel is a grand person for whom we are thankful that he accompanies us on our journey. Since there seems to be some recognition between the two of you, I would suggest that, if it is mutually acceptable, you spend a bit of time with our noble singer of songs to help find your place in our company".

Orun then turns to the porters and slaves. "It has been made clear by our new companion, and I think that it was becoming obvious to many of us, that we need to assemble ourselves and move on". With that, the porters and slaves snap to their jobs and start assembling the materials that had been scattered in the confusion previous.

"I would ask us all to prepare ourselves as quickly as possible". He adds politely and then turns and makes a few jesters towards the priestess of the prince of the blue room and she walks to where Adzul and Deshnah are standing at the chasms edge.

"It appears that that shining wall on the other side is really a set of doors to a way out of here. It might be a bit strange once we cross the portals, but my experience says it should be harmless."

Ssrivan then looks to his most attentive of servants and smiles his encouragement as he packs all of his tools away for the continuing journey.

Does it appear that any of the others may be more in need of palanquins for travel than he? If so, they may ride, otherwise, Ssrivan will return his gear to the palanquin for transport and walk beside it for a while.

Almodhim has been struggling to keep herself under control in this unnatural place. She turns to the party's newest member and speaks: "Yes yes, welcome, your bow will be most useful! I am Almodhim hi'Harisaya of the Red Sword Clan. I have given my warrior expertise to this company, therefore you shall have it as well." Almodhim turns to whatever members will hear her. "I must insist that we move on. If we may not go back to the surface, let us at least move away from this stifling cave!!" Subject: Skip on a bit, brother.
The party assembles itself very quickly. Porters are up and ready, items assembled and stowed, on backs and poles, slaves in position and waiting orders. Guards are in position with weapons drawn and at the ready.

"I see no reason in waiting here if our goal is on the other side of that bridge". Orun points to the arching, railed bridge that spans the chasm. "I know not what has become of Churisan, and Deshnah and Adzul are in conference at the chasms edge. None of these noble persons shall be left behind but it is much easier to move the assemblage in a calm manner, which is possible at this moment, and since we do not know what the next moment, in this mystic cavern, will bring, let us move now."

With that the party starts forward to the bridge, all very orderly and all very precise.

Dlarumei walks back to Orun and speaks loud enough for the rest of the party to hear.

"I agree with this move to the other side, but I would caution you not to tamper with a single thing till we all arrive there with you. I would not even climb those stairs until Ssrivan has had a chance to examine them. I would also have him examine the bridge as well before you cross it. I will go after Churisan to see that no ill has taken him".

With a nod of acknowledgement from Orun, Dlarumei heads to the spot where the party entered the cavern at a jog, intent on finding Churisan

From: Ssrivan hiTlokhar [2002-01-16 06:29:56]
Subject: Bridges and stairs
Ssrivan moves to the fore as the group approaches the bridge and examines it carefully, before nodding and clucking a bit to homself.

"The bridge is safe, if a bit rickety. I wouldn't want too many people on it at once, unless they like the environs of the chasm more than our august company."

He then crosses the bridge and starts looking at the stairs beyond. He seems lost in the carvings and opulence of the great ancients--but his mind is obviously quite busy. He leans down and starts to check one of the steps a bit more intently than before. He gets that innocent, happy smile of a child with a new toy again as the investigation continues. It is quite obvious to all that he's found something again. He pulls out a small lump of chalk and draws a pair of large feet--one on the fourth step, and the other on the sixth. He will draw a second, similar pair a bit further to the side so that the bearers may easily see where they are once the palanquin arrives. He will then add additional feet on each of the steps below the breaks.

"Those feet show which steps are safe to step on. The other one sets something off if you step on it--something we don't have time to look for right now. It should make a rude surprise for anyone following us though, as I will add a final set of feet in when all have passed the stairs."

Ssrivan will then, following a hunch, check the attachment points for the bridge on this side to see if the lever would cause it to release and drop its occupants into the chasm below (visual check only, he is NOT testing the lever). If nothing is found, he will begin to check the steps above the lever to ensure their stability and lack of further such interesting tricks.

Subject: Following the TrapMan...
Hrissu laughs in delight seeing Ssrivan so involved in his explorations. He quickly heads across the bridge behind Ssrivan, wanting to see what he sees, but not wanting to get in his way.

"How solicitous of our ancestors to keep us to the correct path, even with such harsh measures. We are sure to find the path of noble action with such a guide as Ssrivan, and with such incentive as our ancestors left us."

Subject: Out of the Blue
Out of the blue light of the cavern, Churisan comes walking quickly back towards the bridge. Dlarumei the sorceress is with him. Subject: Rings and Strings
Within a matter of moments Urutlen has pulled out a thin, black cord that he has tied off to the center of an arrow shaft. He nocks the arrow well and with grace and determination draws tension on the string. The bow arches as he pulls the arrow back towards his cheek, sighting down the shaft, and making slight adjustments with his fingers. He stands as still as stone, even his breathing has stopped, then, without remark Urutlen lets the arrow springs from the bow, sent forth with no other motion than that of two fingers pointing. The black cord unravels quickly from his side as the arrow almost curves towards its target and then hits stone just on the opposite side of the ring.
Following the cord with your eyes, you can see that it travels to the crystal and beyond, and somehow, almost mysteriously, it has passed through the Kaitar sized hole that is the gap between the crystal and ring demon. Nothing has been disturbed, nothing else has moved.

Urutlen pulls in a breath and brings his bow to rest over his shoulder. He then gives the cord a slight tug; the arrow moves on the chasm floor and pulls up to the ring. He pauses for a moment, takes a few steps to the left and then pulls again. The arrow comes up against the ring demon and then slides across its surface until it is secure. Like a spit over a flam the arrow grasps the rings edges. He gives a much more determined pull and the ring springs up and over he crystal. Pulling feverishly to keep any slack out of the cord, u starts running backwards.

It is at this moment that you see another disk shoot across the chasm and change enough to grasp the ring on the end of Urutlen's line. His line slacks and drops to the cavern floor and the arrow falls in two pieces. The two, intertwined disks, speed for the point where the party had entered the cavern and, in a flash, disappear from sight. You then hear a strange throbbing sound and notice that the crystal has begun to glow a deep red.

Hrissu's nursery-song about the World Egg is a soothing melody that the cavern supports well with wonderful reverberations and echoes which Hrissu uses to make himself sound more like a choirs rather than one voice. His song, thought to be an odd choice by many at first, shows its true intent. The, once panic eyed slaves, and nervous porters, have relaxed a bit; several of them sway slightly to the melodic tune as their minds fill with the love of family and the horror of the cavern seems to fall behind them. The tune seems to refresh the guard, not because these hardened men need nursery-songs to sooth them, but because keeping a calm group together and moving is so much easier than trying to do the same with a half panic-crazed one.

Dlarumei, recognizing what Hrissu is doing, gives him a nod of approval and a slight bow to acknowledge his wisdom in this matter. She then turns and makes her way towards the stairs. Mounting carefully, following the exact same steps as Ssrivan, she climbs to the platform and approaches the Noble Lock Smith to see what he is peering into.

Orun stands his post at the bridge like any guard worth his salt. He is facing the stairs, keeping an eye pealed for any dangers that might develop. The guard he has with him is standing behind him, facing over the bridge and out into the cavern. The two men stand motionless, back-to-back, in a constant vigil.

Two of the slaves head towards their posts as Ssrivan has directed. After what happened to the last slave under Ssrivan's employ these two are compliant yet show signs of hesitation. Dlarumei leans in and whispers something to each of the two slaves, and you notice an immediate reaction from them as she steps away and back toward Ssrivan. The slaves have a new determined look about them, their task, no matter what the end result; will be carried out to the letter.

Ssrivan then directs the third slave to mount the stairs. When he reaches the fifth step and puts his weight upon it, you hear a small clicking sound. The slave hesitates for a second as the crystals to either side of the stairs start to glow a golden yellow-orange. With a slight gesture from Ssrivan the slave then continues on up the stairs. As he steps off of the fifth step your hear another clicking sound, though this time it's from deeper under the platform where Ssrivan and Dlarumei are standing. You notice two large stones ascending along side of the platform. One to the left and one to the right of the shining doors. The two slaves standing next to them make no movement at all and await Ssrivans directives. Once the stones are about waist high to the slaves, they stop with a loud thud. Ssrivan then directs the slaves to pour the water into the holes that are in the center of these large alter-like stones. He directs them to pour it in slowly and cautiously and they follow his directions to the letter.

The party as a whole stands silent, barley a breath is heard. Ssrivan's conjecture would appear to be right. If this were a ceremonial action, with full regalia, music, drums or other instruments, no one would have ever heard the clicking noises. A priest could stand where Ssrivan and Dlarumei are and act as though he were causing these spectacles. The mechanics are well hidden.

The amber crystals are glowing brightly now and the slaves have been told to stop pouring the water into the hole. Ssrivan has obviously heard or felt something that has caused him to give this command. Above the shining doors, set half way into the stonewall, is a glass orb. Six smaller glass orbs surround it. You watch as the large orb begins to fill with a blue liquid. The smaller orbs begin to change color as well, but more due to lights than liquids.

Somewhere off in the distance, behind the doors, you can hear rumbling sounds. Deep tones combined with squeaks and clanks, completely unnatural sounds that seem to become louder as the large orb fills. When the orb is approximately tree quarters full you begin to feel the ground move beneath you feet.

Orun, squinting in thought, quickly sets a guard at his post and moves through the party to the bottom of the stairs. He summons several guards with a slight motion, who respond quickly and stand behind him. Then, he draws his sword and bounds lightly up the stairs, paying particular attention not to step on the fifth stair. The four guards behind him do the same, also avoiding the fifth step. (*There are other party members who follow as well, if you are one of them please indicate that in a public post*) Once on the platform, this small party positions itself across its top, in an effort to prepare for an opening of the doors that might be less congenial than one would hope.

The sound grows and the tension mounts as the orb fills its way to the top. With a resounding thump that you can defiantly feel, and almost see, the sounds stop. The party, nervous but calm, waits silently for what will come next. There is a sound, like glass being drug along metal sheets, which emanates from behind the doors. In a few moments a seam appears down the center of the doors. It widens, and a small bit of light can be seen through the split. With a jolt and a loud popping sound the doors start to open. It is obvious that years and years of being shut to the world have caused some damage to these mighty guardians of what lies beyond. But they still work; and slowly they open to reveal a large box shaped room. There is a faint light shining from behind a glass panel in the ceiling of the room that lights up the faded red walls. A large beam wooden floor, dark with age, fills in the bottom of the room. Ssrivan moves closer to examine this new room. After some thought he requests a spear from one of the guards next to the door and with it, taps upon the wooden floor. There is a soft mush-like sound instead of the crisp reverberations of solid wood. This sound reminds you of poking the coals of a morning fire. Then you see that this floor which looked hard and solid, was not, as it crumbles and falls out of the bottom of the room. Leaving behind a large hole rimmed in metal with several metal cross-members and a view into a dark shaft, too long to see the bottom.

Dlarumei turns to Ssrivan, and in a somewhat whimsical tone says, "Well, that's interesting".

The walls are smooth stone and thought they have a coating of dust on them you can see that there is a high sheen buffed into them. There is a handrail type object, which runs around the walls at about the 3' level and another one around the 7' level. When one peers around the doors into the room one can see that there is a shinny metal panel with three small round stones placed in it, all in a line from top to bottom. There are symbols on each of the stones. The top most stone has the symbol " GH " on it. The middle stone has the symbol " T " on it, and the bottom most stone is etched with the symbol " LL ". There is a cool moist airflow coming up from the shaft from which the old, rotten wooden floor has fallen. The air carries nothing peculiar on it, no smell of death or worms as many would fear.

As many as can, watch the torch travel downward, further and further away. Orun counts out loud as the torch falls. Those rods running around the walls look like great attachment points for balance ropes, and a nice web of them strung through here would allow us to use the palanquin and the iron bars as steady flooring. If we need more secure additional footing, I am sure that we can string enough ropes over those protruding bolts and between the beams to catch anyone slipping from one of the beams.
