Subject: splunking anyone?
It is a quick climb and slid down the rope to the area between the lead car and the ru'un. Once down into that area Jenge, Deshnah and Ssrivan can feel the electricity in the air and it makes them a bit uneasy. There is a lot of power stored up in this machine, a lot of power. The tethers that connect the ru'un to the tubway cars are taunt and straining as thought the sphere is still futily pulling the train to nowhere. It is conjectured between Jenge and Ssrivan that the reason why the sphere has not broken its tether is that the ru'un only pulls the train enough to slowly get it up to speed, for the comfort of the passengers. Therefore it must be only applying enough pressure against the line to try and pull the cars but not break the tether.

The sphere itself has taken on a new look itself, not completely but there are small lines, crack-like in nature though actually very linear and angled instead of irregular or random. It is as though the sphere has expanded a bit and has split its shell in order to do so. But, that there are stress lines built in for just such an occasion. Light blue streaks flash around the sphere through these lines and cast aquiline images on the walls of the tunnel.

After studying the tethers for a few moments, Ssrivan recognizes a form of release mechanism at the front of the tubway car. His conjecture is that by applying this mechanism the tethers will be released and the ru'un will then advance up the tunnel as planned.

Subject: Hanging around
Almodhim hangs around outside the hole, curious, but she just can't find the strength she needs to scramble down. "More underground madness," she thinks to herself...

From: Churisan Soruna [2003-11-22 13:31:28]
Subject: can it fly?
Churisan asks: "Learned ones, if we free the ru'un from its wagons, it can advance around the track and up. Then it will face the collapse as a hole in its path. Can it cross such a hole?"

From: Jenge Varion [2003-11-22 22:51:14]
Subject: There's a Hole in My Track

Jenge taps his fingers quietly on his belt. "Good Churisan, I think the question is, can we help it to cross such a hole? It is designed to run on a track, is it not? Can we extend the necessary structure to allow it to cross the hole?"

From: Churisan Soruna [2003-11-23 16:21:49]
Subject: a bridge?
"I don't know how we could bring the ru'un across the hole, unless it is much lighter than it looks. Even if it can ride that bridge (he points at the rail that runs along the middle of the floor of the tunnel, and extends a few ways out beyond the edge of the hole), there is still a [10m] gap for it to cross. We don't have timbers to make a bridge. We could possibly rig ropes, but this would only work if the ru'un weighs no more than 2 or 3 men. I regret colleagues, I don't see how we could bring such a mass of metal across such a gap. It might be more practical to lift it up through the floor, but I haven't figured out how long that would take yet.

From: Shih Nacunya [2003-11-23 19:00:02]
Subject: Gears to you
Listening to the dialog, Shih has a thought:

"Most noble companions, does the sphere appear to be connected to the wheels by some apparatus? If the sphere simply sits in its housing that rolls along, then it's more likely that the sphere may be able to bridge the gap on its own. If it can't, then any ropes you might attack would probably be viewed as impediments to be removed. And, as you said, we have no way to practically arrest its fall; it's too heavy!"

Anticipating what may happen if the sphere is released and finds its berth occupied by rock, Shih directs a few of the slaves to clear the path for the ru'un.

From: Deshnah [2003-11-24 02:04:32]
Subject: Shall we let it loose
Desh,
Also looks at the connector between Ru'un and carriages.
"I have a feeling we will - sooner or later - release the sphere from its carriages. So I for one will be back up on the platform when we do" I am sure we will find some slave to make the disconnection.

And so Desh gradually makes the climb back to the station.

From: Shih Nacunya [2003-11-24 09:15:58]
Subject: Give the slave a red shirt
"We cannot afford to lose another porter. Using rope or some of our other equipment, we should really try to free the ru'un from a distance."

From: Jenge Varion [2003-11-24 21:39:02]
Subject: Ever-thoughtful

Looking thoughtful, the scholar says, "Well, can we cannibalize from another section of track, to get the pieces we need to bridge the hole? If we have to, cannot our slaves tunnel back somewhat to where there is track we no longer need?"

From: Churisan Soruna [2003-11-25 09:11:17]
Subject: cutting track
"hmm, I doubt we can cut this stony stuff without magic, but I'll see what we can do." Churisan starts to organize a work party, including himself, to climb down and go down the tunnel behind the buried cars, there to take up some of the rails if he can. He's probably only got bronze chisels to work with.

From: Churisan Soruna [2003-11-25 15:27:35]
Subject: a man, a plan...
"Pious Ones, the railing is too hard and heavy for our limited tools. The stone we might work, but it is held in place by metal of the Ancients, which our humble tools cannot defeat. We cannot bridge the collapse with railings from below." Churisan paused to drink and mop his brow. He has been working for some time now. "There might be another way. We could try to lift the ru'un straight up. We would have to remove more of the stone flooring, and build a brace with pulleys and parts from the moving chambers below. The stone-cutting will take time, but is feasible with the hammers and chisels we have. I don't know if we can take parts from the damaged chambers, they might be made of Ancient metals we can't work, and the other ru'un may try to stop us. Oh, and of course the round ru'un will have to allow us to lift him, and if he is solid metal then he may be too heavy anyway." He paused again. "It will be a mighty labor. If we could lift the creature-device with sorcery, or remove the stone that way, we could save days of labor. Would such spells be so easily detectable here within the mountain? Or even if they were, might we not have time to depart through the magical door before our pursuers arrived in force?"

From: Dlarumei Ba'ashcha [2003-11-25 20:01:40]
Subject: Hummmm
Dlarumei steps forward,

"I see the various points that noble Churisan makes, and he brings many valid concerns to light. What if the Ru'un does not want to be lifted, or feels threatened by our attempt? We all saw what it does to stone; I doubt that flesh would pose much of a challenge. I know that we are not wanting to risk magic and open ourselves to being discovered by those close by, but it may come to that I fear. At least it seems that those who may be looking for us also have individuals after them, which gives them something else to think about even if we fire off a quick spell or two."

She pauses and thinks for a moment

"I have a spell, the one that I used in the cavern against the other Ru'un, the onyx obolesque. I am not sure that I can determine its direction, I mean use it to create the missing rail or push the sphere up through a hole we can make, but I am willing to try. I have controlled its height before and have angled it slightly in the past. I would need some preparation time to think of how I would direct this spell but I will try if our collective group feels it worth the risk. Just remember that once it is in place, the obolesque is almost impossible to move or destroy."

She looks around for comments.

The Livyani Priest pushes himself off the wall where he had been leaning, spits out the piece of whatever he had been chewing on to make one comment before leaning back against the wall.

"I know of no magic that can't be undone, my wise Dlarumei, some more difficult and time consuming, but still undoable."

From: Deshnah [2003-12-01 01:49:32]
Subject: worth a try
Desh starts climbing back to the station.
He comments the spall may be worht a try Dlarumei, however before you cast it can everyone ensure the are clear from the track both in the tunnel and here in the chamber.

Alternatively would a Hands of Kra the Mighty pus the sphere up through our hole???

From: Shih Nacunya [2003-12-01 08:26:17]
Subject: Boom
"Deshnah, Kra brings mighty forces to bear on a single point. Where those forces start from (i.e., the radius) and the amount of force define that spell's power. Doing Kra on the sphere would be a BAD thing!" =)

From: Jenge Varion [2003-12-03 01:53:46]
Subject: Hand-wringing

Shaking his head slightly, Jenge offers "My humble enchantment can tunnel through this stone, but will continue on in its direction and do additional damage. It may disturb the operations of this mountaintop's installations, or it may indeed bring unwanted attention when it creates a new tunnel entrance from the outer slopes. I cannot recommend such action, but mention it for completeness' sake." He bows his head, hands folded within his sleeves.

From: Churisan Soruna [2003-12-03 08:11:06]
Subject: unhitching
"Learned ones, whether or not you can use your sorcery to bring the ru'un to it's resting place, it will have to be detached from its carts. Can you at least do that?"

From: Neshkriuma Kharsama [2003-12-03 12:25:19]
Subject: The Ru'un awaits - 'redshirt' to the fore
Nesh makes his way down into the hole with the others.

"Nobles: I believe Ssrivan has already deduced the correct path for our efforts. We must release this extraordinarily powerful ru'un and let it go as it will, lest our impeding cause it to become... wrathful. I, for one, would not want to incur such wrath." (A wry yet distant smile plays across his face).

"Let us endeavor (quickly) to see if we may release the mechanism from afar. If not, we may have no choice but to allow another slave to meet his glorious end."

Now, with a more sarcastic smile.
"Noble Shih - I am surprised that you would deny this grand opportunity to one of the lowly, who should so greatly appreciate a hastened trip to visit the Worm Lord."

(look of urgency)
"I hope that the ru'un will complete its journey when it is released. If so, I assume that we will need to be above, prepared for action from the metal door, the dancing lights in the floor, or some unknown source of chaos. Let us make these preparations in haste!"

From: Orun Vu'urtesh [2003-12-03 16:34:58]
Subject: Hey that was a good idea
Orun, who has only been casually listening to all the conversations to this point, speaks up at hearing the battle mages words.

Yelling down into the hole from above.

"Nobles all, Neshkriuma makes a very valid point. The longer we stand around the more likely we are to incur a wrath of some kind. I cast my lot with Nesh on this and say that we cut the ru'un loose and clear out of its way. If Dlarumei can create a bridge with her spell, then let it be done. My bones ache for the road and my heart bemoans being trapped within this stone tomb."

Orun then, in a somewhat brash manner, which he exhibits occasionally when he feels helpless, calls for three slaves who he sends down the hole to the nobles below.

"Use them as you see fit", he yells down and then walks towards the end station and begins moving people out of the line of sight of the sphere, should it ascend to its resting place.

From: Game Master [2003-12-03 16:54:28]
Subject: A post for Ssrivan
In Ssrivan's absence, he has requested that the GM advance his character. Here is his post, not necessarily in his style of writing or words, but with the overall intent of action.

As the slaves joined the nobles below Ssrivan addresses those with him.

"I am not sure that we need loose anyone. The release devices are redundantly secure but, if released at the same time should simply spring away from the lead car and drag behind the sphere."

Then turning to Churisan he says, "My examinations show that the sphere is not fastened to the wagon it rests upon. I would estimate that it is able to stay seated through some other means, but I would imagine that were it to be separated from its resting place, the ru'un could continue on without its bed. In fact, I am not even sure that the gap would need to be bridged for this sphere to reach its birth. It seems to have an extraordinary amount of power. Not that I have come across such a thing before, but from what I have pieced together from all of our conversations and that which I do know about such things, I am certain of one thing. This sphere is not ordinary and therefore has unlimited potential as far as our combined knowledge is concerned. There would be no reason not to find out what it can do. Either way we are at that point.""

He consciously scratches the scar on his left forearm, a reminder of his earlier meeting with powerful objects, and smiles a crooked smile.

From: Shih Nacunya [2003-12-03 20:11:31]
Subject: Crispy critter
"Nesh, a slave that dies by that sphere will either squirt like a fluxed chlen to coat the walls or serve as a burnt offering to Vimuhla. Neither make good undead. Thanks though for thinking of me." =)

"Let's do whatever we're going to do quickly please."

From: Churisan Soruna [2003-12-04 08:10:03]
Subject: confusion
"Ssrivan, whether from wagon it sits on or the moving chambers it pulls, clearly the ru'un must be released. Please tell us how to do so that we may proceed."

From: Shih Nacunya [2003-12-04 10:59:18]
Subject: Global warming
After listening to Ssrivan's explanation, Shih utters a quick prayer to Sarku, quickly climbs down and making sure that nobody is in the way, releases the ru'un.

From: Almodhim Harisaya [2003-12-04 11:43:06]
Subject: Yes, let's!!
Almodhim, whose patience has never been plentiful, sides with Orun. She speaks down the hole as well, "I cast my lot with Orun. Let us release the ru'un! La, this waiting is tiresome!" She folds her arms huffily, bracing herself for any consequences for her brashness.

Seeing the intent of Shih's hasty action, Nesh charges up the slope, out of the hole, sweeping the guards and porters, etc. before him as much as possible to safety down the corridor.

Up the track to the end station and then down the corridor far enough as not to be in the direct sight of the sphere should it make it up that far. All the while muttering something under her breath as she moves the slaves and porters in her area back to safety but NOT back so far that they are over the translucent tiles in the floor, just in case...

Fwiw, I do try to rapidly scrample out of the way if the sphere decides to jolt backwards.

From: Game Master [2003-12-06 15:50:44]
Subject: Sproing!!!!!
Before the others in the area were able to react, Shih released the center cables disengagement mechanism. A loud pop could be heard, like a large stone hitting a marble floor in a vast temple, followed by a strange zinging sound as the cable springs forward, past those standing near Shih, and coiles itself around the sphere. The sphere itself shifted slightly on its cradle and the blue lights from within flicker as it slides and shifts to right itself in its cradle under new forces.

Shih looks at the slave that he has posted on the far release trigger with the look of "I hope you were paying attention, because now it is your turn". The slave nods his head in understanding, places his hand on the mechanism and waits for Shih's command. Shih has sprung back to the outside of the cables while conferring with slave and placed his hand firmly on the release, he then nods his head in the standard, one, two, three and the two men pressed their releases in unison. (This all takes place in a manner of seconds)

Again, as before, a loud pop with a second directly behind it, cables whining as they spring forward, slicing the air and then slapping up against the sphere. A scream from the slave can be heard as he holds up a hand missing the last two fingers and gushing a red stream of gore. Shih too holds his hand, and though he has lost no digits, there is blood running down off his fingertips from the gash opening in the middle of his palm.

However, all those down below plus Orun and Almodhim up top, turn their attention from the injured men towards the sphere as it lurches forward on the track. Like men winning a tug-of-war, the massive steel sphere lurches forward with great speed being released from its bonds, while there is a distinct smell of electricity begining to fill the air. So much power is being contained at this moment in the sphere that you can see the air around the object move in waves away from the iron ball as it moves up the tunnel and around the corner.

-OOC [I'll just post this for them to save time, I am sure they will not mind as it keeps them from being cooked]

Orun and Almodhim, who were working on assisting anyone wanting to exit up out of the hole, take a quick look behind them, down the track, see the shadow of hulking sphere and quickly decide that there is only one way to go. Shoving whomever they were helping out of the opening, back down the hole, they then turn to one another, give the signal for "you first" and not wanting to prolong danger any longer Orun jumps feet first down the hole, no time for rope climbing or careful foot placement, it's all or nothing and he chooses all. Almodhim dives directly after him, headfirst, and actually has a hold of Oruns shoulders when he touches the ground. This move, remarkable enough, gives her the momentum and leverage needed to hand spring away from Orun, off his shoulders, but at the same time pulling his tunic at the shoulders to launch him off of his own feet and send them both rolling down the tunnel with a much softer landing than simply hitting the ground would have afforded them. Probably saving a broken leg or two in the process.

Churisan, still concerned about what will happen when the sphere meets the open expanse and missing track, peers up though the hole to try and get a shot of the action. The sphere, as it ascends the tunnel seems to build up power, there are only two blasts of electricity clearing debris as it progresses towards the end station. The rest of its power can actually be felt. There is a great pressure building up inside the tunnel and many small flickers of blue lightning begin to surround the sphere. From his, keyholesk vantage point, Churisan watches as the sphere comes upon the chasm. He can see the three conical shaped points, those protrusions from which the lightning is shot, retract into the sphere to the point where they are just small nibs almost flush with the surface. The sphere does not slow as it approaches the gap but the small lighting type charges begin to increase. Churisan watches as long as he can as the sphere becomes almost too bright with these little shots of electricity to watch. As it reaches the destroyed area, the wagon that the sphere is resting on falls from under the iron ball. It is not only falling away, but it appears to be push forcible downward as well. The sphere itself, only dips slightly as it, crosses the gap. Churisan has to back away from under the hole as debris and the pressure force from the sphere prove to be too great for him to remain.

The sphere travels through the air to the end of the station where it slips gently into its resting place. The tunnel where it has passes, however, seems to have taken on a new shape. The more angular sides and floor of the tunnel are now softer and rounder and the stone looks shinny and wet. The rope that was tied off to the debris above the hole, that was used to descend to the sphere now lies on the floor of the tunnel beneath the hole, its end singed and smoldering.

From: Orun Vu'urtesh [2003-12-06 16:22:41]
Subject: And in center ring...
Orun rolls and springs to his feet with a whimsical, confused look on his face. Checks himself out for damage and smiles a wry smile as he finds himself intact. He looks towards Almodhim, bows a deep bow, and chuckling, says,

"That was interesting, and actually kind of fun. I never thought of myself as a performer, but... Thank you for the assist, I was dreading that landing."

He bows again and then covers his head as small stones rain down when the sphere passes overhead. Once the sphere has found its resting place and Orun sees the rope fall down the hole, he turns to the tunnel, back to the party left below with him, and gives a look as though, "We going this way now?"

From: Churisan Soruna [2003-12-06 18:14:41]
Subject: careful now
Churisan cautiously starts to find his way over the rubble and into the upper tunnel. He checks to make sure the rock and debris isn't too hot. If it's passable, he tries to clear a path the others below can use, then climbs out and walks up to the platform above.

From: Shih Nacunya [2003-12-06 23:45:48]
Subject: Healing time
Shih rushes to the slave with the hurt hand. If the fingers have been neatly sliced off, he picks them up and holding them in place, casts his highest healing spell. We really can't afford to lose any more slaves.

Subject: No hands, Ma!
Almodhim laughingly bows to Orun after their adventurous fall and says "I consider performing with you a pleasure, master swordsman. Let us find the others and see what help we may be." It then dawns on her that yes, they are underground once again. She sighs and steels herself against her fear of small and underground spaces. But the sweat begins to bead...

"NO!"

Orun yells from where he stands and then rushing towards Shih and the slave continues.

"With this excitement, and your willingness to be helpful I am sure that you have simply forgotten. But please, Noble Worm worshiper, we have elected not to use magic for now. Remember, there are those above who may be looking for us, and now that we have moved forward in our progress, let us not move backwards in the same breath. The slave will not die from this injury, I have seen far worse in battle that was never attended to by any healing and those have survived. Perhaps Deshnah can brew up something, but I implore you not to use magic at this moment."

Subject: "Best Story," Huh?

"Hold, Master of Worms!" calls Jenge urgently. "The passage of the sphere has changed the consistency, at least, of the material you are about to climb up. Shall we not first examine it, to determine if it should be extremely hot, or perhaps acidic?" The priest of knowledge gingerly approaches the smoldering cave-in area, eyeing the collapsed wagon as well.

From: Shih Nacunya [2003-12-09 22:26:13]
Subject: Critterfied
"Jenge, thank you for your concern. I would not have touched rock along the path of the sphere. Clearly, it is smoking. However, this rock here where we dug down offers more promise."

Subject: Dirges in the Dark
While waiting for his turn to climb out, Shih breaks into a rousing dirge to the Great Worm, Render of Flesh. To the subsequent scrambling, he comments rhetorically that, "That always gets them out of the hole!"

OOC: If I'm singing dirges, it's my way of indicating that I look forward to getting up and out of whatever we're doing. :)

From: Orun Vu'urtesh [2003-12-12 15:06:44]
Subject: Some run from Dark dirges.
Orun begins to lop up the tunnel, following the path of the Sphere.
He takes into account all the possible changes of the tunnel shape that a man with no scientific training would be able to notice. As he approaches the ledge he slows and then, after judging the distance and drop, runs hard up the remaining rail till it ends and then leaps down to the smoothed rocks below. He will then make his way to the top and help Urutlen if there are still those needing assistance out of the hole.

From: Game Master [2003-12-12 16:08:08]
Subject: Moving out.
The rope slides down the hole from Urutlen and Churisan uses it to climb the rest of the way out.

Orun and Ssrivan move their way up the tunnel following the tracks. They both make observations that the sphere had removed a few large stones in its path and that the closer to the caved in part of the tunnel the sphere came the more energies it expended. This is evident by the amount of change the tunnel goes through the further they advance up to the cave in. It is still angular at the start of their walk and becomes more spherical in nature as they come closer to the open gap. The stone, it seems, what been reshaped a bit as though it were wax having been pressed upon with a hot object. There is, however, no residual heat left in the walls or floor of the tunnel, they are warm, but no warmer that if they had been sitting in the hot sun all day.

Orun leaps from the tongue-like extension of the track out and down to the smoothed rock surface left by the sphere. He lands well, all though a bit hard and starts climbing up to where the hole and Urutlen are. The rock only proves to be a bit slick against the sole of his sandals, but this is much less effort than the jumbled pile of debris that had previous lay here. He, Churisan and Urutlen aid those exiting the hole until they are all out from down below and then they head for the end station.

It is obvious that Ssrivan has been listening to something, as he stands at the lip of the gap with his head tilited to one side a bit. For those who can see him, it soon becomes apparent to what he has heard. There seems to be a deep rumbling sound, very faint and behind much rock, but it grows in intensity. It never becomes loud, but it does reach a level where it can be heard when all is quiet.

He will link himself to her using the short length of rope he rescued earlier, assuming it is long enough to allow both of them to cross safely.

"I'll have to look at things a bit first to understand exactly how things are linked up there, Shih. Something I could not do until the station's power source was properly in place."

Ssrivan will say this after crossing the pit, but before reaching the station platform.

Ssrivan ties himself off to his scribe/nurse and then begins to traverse the small ledge left around the parameter of the caved in area. The stone is smooth, now that the sphere has passes, and treacherous. Successfully navigating this treachery with only minor tense moments, the two of them travel past Jenge, only pausing long enough to concur with him about the sound, and then climb up onto the end station platform. They then make their way down the hallway where Ssrivan meets up with Dlarumei who is patiently waiting for him there. After the great sounds of the sphere finding it's home have subsided most of party stand in silence. No slave or porter has made a single sound over the past several minutes and they stand around like dazed chattel waiting to be herded to the next destination, many wide eyed and slack jawed as they hang on every word and motion of the nobles. They part quickly and without sound as Orun sweeps through their midst, followed by the rest of the noble assemblage who had been below or lingered in the end station. This group makes its way to where Ssrivan and Dlarumei now stand in conversation with Shih and Jenge. Between Churisan and Nesh the military guards have been set. Many up front, in case the door reveals something unwanted and only a few as rear guard, just in case something is coming up from the tunnels below.

Dusk is upon the party and the soft orange glow of the fading sunlight gives and eerie cast to the hallway as the low toned drone emanates from under the floor and the twelve tiles, which lay scattered upon the hallway stone, are lit in a muted burnt umber cast with dimly lit yellow symbols.

The entire party stays behind Ssrivan and Dlarumei as the two of them stand only a foot away from the first lit tile. The deep droning tone changes, it's pitch rising just a bit, and at the same time the first tile before Ssrivan gives off a slight fluctuation in color and intensity.

Hrissu notices the pitch change immediately and lifts his head, turning it slightly to get the best angle on the sound, a look of playful amusement crosses his face.

"Ssrivan, from the pitch change, we must execute this key in an alotted time. Look quickly at the ceiling."

The pattern from the first lit tile is shining onto the ceiling. The image cast is of two figures connected together by a line. Under the line and between the figures is a square. Bisecting the line and the square is some kind of ridge. The image runs east to west and none of the other tiles are strong enough in their illumination to cast such ceiling pictographs.

"If that's a mirror up there, then I'm guessing that the light will be reflected into other squares to create a grand design either on the ceiling or in the air. Must we then activate these lighted squares in groups? I'm strangely reminded of the room that shifted us. There's certainly enough power."

You'll be blocking a beam of light. I'm guessing that there are two of you to do this because it's safer. Once we begin, if that light reconnects, we're all dead."

To his smarter slave:

"Mobadu, remember that trick of burning wet cloth to make the lines of light appear in the smoke, please do that again near the square now. Use one of our pots."

West, then, would be to the exterior wall, the one that has a large chunk of it missing and is open to the evening air. The missing piece is about 20 feet long and irregular approx at the half waypoint of the length of the hallway. The East then would be the solid interior wall with the pinholes in it. ]

Shih's instructions are followed quickly and quietly, Mobadu his slave crouches to the side of Ssrivan and quickly mixes a pot with cloth and flame, which becomes a pot of smoke in short order. The smoke rises slowly and begins to reveal the pathways that the light is taking from the tile to the ceiling. It also begins to reveal an extensive grid work of tiny crisscrossing beams of light about waist high around this first tile. It is obvious that these lines continue north towards the door but the smoke has not revealed more than just a few feet before an evening breeze, entering from the gaping maw in the west wall scatters its wispy tendrils and erases the lines. Mobadu looks back to Shih longing for instruction, to which Shih assures him that the breezes will be intermittent and that he will need to be patient and listen carefully to instructions. His other two slaves have prepared a short pole as instructed and wait on the opposite side of Ssrivan and Dlarumei for instruction.

Dlarumei, after concurring with Ssrivan, lines the two slaves up on opposite sides of the illuminated tile on the floor and tells them to walk slowly until the stand on either side of the tile. As they start moving forward, obviously entering the lines in the grid work of lights, there are several deep, sharp tones that rise up from under the tile, and with the sound of stone chaffing stone the tile begins to rise up out of the floor on an ever-growing pedestal exactly the size of the tile itself. Obviously, the slaves pause, but they are encouraged immediately by Dlarumei to continue, to finish what they have been instructed to do. They continue to walk out until they are opposite the rising tile as commanded. They hold the pole over the tile to emulate the pictograph illuminated on the ceiling. As the tile raises the images become clearer like the mast of a far off ship becomes more in focus as it arrives in port. It is evidently clear that the pictograph is the image of two persons standing on opposite sides of a square and that their hands are on top of the square as the thin line becomes quite clearly a pair of arm.

Hrissu, who has been matching pitch with the tones from below raises an eyebrow and softly says in a far away tone.

"Noble Locksmith, Lady Sorcerous, from the time that the sphere locked itself into place and the deep tones began their song, I have counted 192 slow beats before this current tone change. My skills lie in other areas than those you the two of you possess, but I am sure that this is not an arbitrary numbered count. There are few songs that would end on this beat, and I am acquainted with some ancient music styles as well and none of them end thusly that I am aware of."

His words trail off as he concentrates again on matching the tone that is emanating from below.

As the sun sinks further beyond the peak of the mountain, the lighter colors of twilight give way to the darker shadows of nightfall. This transition, however, makes the happenings in the hallway all the more clear. The second tile has lit up a section of ceiling and two slaves cautiously, and ceremoniously walk towards the tile. This second tile is six paces to the east and six paces to the north from where the first tile bade attention. The slaves approach with pole between them and assume the north and south stance depicted on the ceiling by the light. As soon as they arrived, and almost before they were in position, the tile begins to rise, no one is even sure if the pole was directly over the tile before it began its assent.

This time, just before the tile reaches it settling point and locks in, Hrissu calls out the next 48 count and another light shoots up from the third tile, up and to the left of the second. There is a pattern with three legs this time, instead of the two that were present in the previous tile displays. One facing North, one South, and one to the East. Still with the line that connects them over a square in the center.

If the slaves who have their arms on the pedestals cannot move forward after the first sequence of four, we may have a problem. We now have enough poles to fulfill the next step.

"Dlarumei, how do the headwaters of a river know that a dam has been created? Similarly, if the light originates in the pinholes, how would it know that it has or has not reached its destination. Something in the wall with the pinholes must recognize when something breaks the light next to the appropriate square; it's more a function of distance. In fact, I believe that placing people near the wall that are not exactly where the wall was would set off any trap that's there. The device would interpret that as someone trying to go around. In short and on reflection, I believe all is as it should be. Further, because the trap has not already gone off, the device in the walls does not care about anything beyond where the wall should be. The more I think on it, I'd argue for continuing as we are."

As we don't have alot of cloth, some strips could be held over the opening by some of us at strategic spots. We'd have to be careful to step on the bottom to stop fluttering. Dlarumei has instructed the three slaves to walk out to the third tile in a straight line and to assume the pattern around the tile as is represented on the ceiling. This they do, however, without a pole. The three arrive to their position, place themselves as best they can and place their hands together over the tile, blocking the beam of light to the stone above. The tile, obviously stationary for a very long time, pops up some of the stone around it, like a trapped beast breaking its bindings, and starts to rise upward. The sound startles the slaves, who waver slightly, but who, very diligently, keep their hands over the beam of light as the tile progresses. Once again Hrissu calls out the end of another pattern in the tones, and once again another light births from within the next tile. As with its predecessors it too lights up a pattern on the ceiling, once again two images in a North and South orientation and two slaves are made ready.

Looking down to the door again, Ssrivan notices, as do the rest of the party members, that a second light has begun to glow on the second row of symbols and a third on the third row, is flickering ever so slightly. The first being in the lower left corner, the second is two symbols over from that one and up on into the second row, and the third is directly above that symbol. There are quizzical looks coming from several party members as they contemplate the meaning of such things.

"Dlarumei had the three slaves move into position to ensure that the pattern would be built properly the first time Shih. The response to the first two actions was not hazardous, so the risk was acceptable. It was also easier to form the pattern with their arms than it would have been with the poles, as it was an asymmetrical design. This would not be advisable action for the first or last stones--the first being now complete and the last just ahead of us. The pair of slaves are sent out on their short promenade to the fourth tile when Hrissu calls out that they need to rush as there are only a few beats left before the next third will begin. The slaves respond quickly to the singer of songs and the noble of the golden sunburst clan and pick up their pace to arrive only seconds before he counts out the last few beats. Their tile pushes itself upward as the slaves cover the light with their joined hands, and seconds after that, there is a notable change in the tone emanating from under the floor. The tone is now louder and Hrissu notes that it has risen a minor melodic third in its resonance. The fifth tile's color has changed to a deep, blood red, but the hue is so pure and strong that the image on the ceiling is sharp and clear. Once again it is a representation just like the others, only this fifth tile requests but one person to stand in the northern direction.

It is at this point that Urutlen notices a partition descending on the exterior of the west wall. With all focused on the tiles and the door, only Urutlen and Deshnah had become aware of the slow progression of this metal wall. Like the blind to a window it falls with the cadence of the beat that Hrissu is counting. Its heavy iron rows completely blocking out the little light remains gifted to the outside world as it rolls downward to meet the floor. It is at this point that a call comes up from the guards at the rear of the party, exclaiming that a iron wall is rolling down the outside of the doorway that separates the end station from the hallway itself.

"We have tried, but there is no way to stop, or even slow its progress Kasi" comes from the guards, "What would you have us do?!"

The single slave hesitantly places his hand over the beam of light; the color causing some consternation, yet there is no ill effect and she effectively blocks the image and causes the tile to rise from is cradle.

The party moves forward into the field of the first four raised tiles. Care is taken not to stand too close to the walls, especially the one with the lowering iron blinds. There are many who find the sound of the iron scraping and popping over centuries of debris and growth a bit unnerving, but they file in none-the-less. Almodhim, wild eyed with doom at the thought of an iron box, finds Orun in the crowd and saddles up with the massive warrior in an effort to console herself.

Tile after tile lights up and slave after slave is sent to assume the mandated position for the next three in this middle section. First two slaves, then one again, and the last with three. Their orientations being East West, South and North South and East respectively.

Hrissu counting out each phase of change as they arrive. On the eight tile his counting coincided with the lockdown of the iron blinds and the hallway is now lit from the tiles that have been raised and the lantern Shih had his slave light. It is an eerie sight and shadows cast interesting patterns on the walls and ceiling. Though there are spots that seem incomplete for some reason.

Once again Hrissu calls out the change in tone, and once again the deep tone rises in pitch. "Another minor melodic third" Hrissu informs the party, and at that point a green light launches towards the ceiling. It is a brilliant green, sharp and clear, and it makes no hesitation in its calling for six persons to fill the image represented on the ceiling. The image demands one person for each point of the compass and then one at the northwest point and one at the southwest point. Eight of the 12 rows on the iron door now have a single lit symbol, shining in the color of the tile that sparked its rebirth.

No sooner were they set at their posts than the, now all too common, cry of change springs forth from Hrissu as he kicks a small bag into the area suggested by Shih and the others. The final tile lights its beacon with a brilliant green beam so strong that one would think it would hit the ceiling with enough force to bring it down. This tile sits in the exact center of the hallway (from east to west) and about 20 feet back from the iron door. It is slightly larger that the other tiles that have come before it, and its beam is thicker and brighter that any of its predecessors. Its pattern is clear, six symbols spread out in a fan pattern from East to West through the southern compass points, and a single person due north of the tile, however, there is no attaching line for the northern representation. It is a single symbol, slightly different from the others thus far, both in size and pattern.

Along with this beam comes an unexpected tone. Hrissu informs you that the base, underlying, tone has not changed; yet several new notes have been added. "Six to be precise" He adds tilting his head to take in the most minute detail. "And these are not the same as the others. They have the distinct sound of an instrument pitched to a particular harmonic". With only five guards, Churisan, Jenge, Orun, Deshnah, Almodhim and the Livyani Priest not directly involved with the lights or actions needed to work this lock, the tension mounts as defensive strategies change constantly and they redistribute themselves to help keep the slaves and porters calm as well as try and provide safety in case of some unforeseen event or attack.

Hrissu pronounces the next tone change, and as usual, he is right on the money. The tone changes drastically, from its low minor melodic, somewhat eerie tone, to a much more lively and harmonic tone. At the same time the Livyani Priest mentions that there seems to be a low-level fog type substance emanating from where he is standing at the back of the ranks. As those not busy with light holding turn, they see a grayish-white fog roll quietly past the Livyani Priests feet and those of the slave around him. There is some anxiety but none move from their placement.

Ssrivan talks a deep breath and audibly "hummmmms" as the floor before him fogs over to show a grid pattern just off the surface of the tile. It seems to be a pattern that mimics the symbols arrangement on the door. The grid square directly in from of him has a small green light beaming down upon it from the ceiling.

OOC[I wish to apologize to my players and those lurkers out there, this section would be much more understandable if there were graphics to go along with it. Well, actually there are, the problem seems to be that no matter how basic I make them so that they will fit within the 10k requirement, I cannot get them to upload. I have sent messages to the sysop to see if this can be changed or if he can help with the issue, but thus far, I have not received a response. I will try and set up a web site for displaying these graphics and let you know as soon as that happens. Sorry for any confusion this has caused, this area was created with graphics in mind.]

The fog slowly creeps in around the groups, ankles creating uneasy and anxious feelings, yet no one moves. As this white mist rolls out over the floor you can see the grid lines that are just off the floor appear around your feet. There is also a long golden line that appears in the fog, a line that encircles the area of the raised tiles and before the door.

Orun takes a moment to think and then he steps inward so that he is within the line as the rest of the party is. Then, Ssrivan, who has been waiting for everyone to be at their ready and in place steps forward, still mumbling to himself, to the spot that seems to be reserved for him.

Once he is situated over the spot a loud crashing sound can be heard, like two large gongs being forced together somewhere under the floor. The sound is sharp and piercing and precipitates a jolting movement under the party's feet.

The golden line encompassing the area where the group stands grows a bit brighter and wider and those closest to the line notice a difference of several inches between the height of where the floor used to be and where it is now. The party now stands, in what could be best described, as an extremely shallow fountain base with a two-inch lip surrounding the rectangular section sunken into the hallway floor. From this lip to the walls on either side, remains a section about one foot wide still at the original floor level.
The section upon which Ssrivan stands, as well as, the ten feet between him and the iron door also remains at its original height. Its only difference is that there is a grid outlined that resembles the doors symbol arrangements, though without the actual symbols.

Dlarumei shouts out for all to remain where they are and not to move a muscle. Ssrivan turns with his hands raised in a gesture of calming and then regards deeply the pattern reflecting upon the ceiling.

The mist thickens and rises a bit, reaching knee level. It is at this point that you can make out several light grids that criss-cross the hallway adding depth to their two dimensional appearance. Several of the parties' nobles cast long looks towards the ceiling to try and discern the relevance of how that is involved with this door.

Ssrivan, half explaining and half dictating, pronounces that there are three symbols represented on the ceiling, symbol that are created by the positioning of the party members who stand diligently at their new posts. He further explains that the three symbols represented on the ceiling match with the symbols on the door and that they are the first symbol for each third of the door. Example being that the first symbol on the ceiling, the one furthest from the door, is the same as the first symbol that lit up on the door in the lower right hand corner. The second symbol on the ceiling is the same as the fifth door symbol, which is also the first symbol of the tone and color change for that section. Thus the final ceiling symbol is the same as the ninth lit symbol on the door and also the first of the emerald colored symbols.

Ssrivan also points out that there is a grid pattern on the floor between himself and the door and if he moves into a certain position then he can see the lit symbols from the door reflect in the mist in the pattern which allows for a mirroring effect of the door in the grid.

It is obviously time to make some decisions that will affect the whole party, Ssrivan half mutters to himself, and he turns to face the door once again, with his hand on his chin, and a ponderous look on his face.

"1. This last grid appears to be 10 paces from the door when all other measurements are in increments of 12. Where's the other 2'? We've sunk approximately 2", so it could be there. Alternately, it could be extradimentional.

2. Our current positions leave 6 people unplaced. Those placed cannot move.

3. There are color patterns that room after room continue to be repeated: gold, red, green, then blue. We've yet to see blue.

4. Pedestals are used in elaborate ceremonies to open nexus portals. When last we saw the pedestals, individuals needed to move atop them in the correct order to activate specific keys. It seems reasonable that standing atop the pedestals here will cause them to rise to a position where the one holding the key can then activate the lock. I'm thinking that Ssrivan, by virtue of his current position, must be the person that moves from pedestal to pedestal."

Ssrivan's response:

"I have noticed that there are no markings on the floor or the ceiling that would indicate which way the door opens. I am not sure if it is simply a matter of the time that has passed from the last time the door was opened or whether it is for other reasons. I do, however, believe that the pattern on the floor grid from the doors reflection needs to be used, and I am feeling that the floor before me must be pressure sensitive or that the grid will indicate where on is stepping. I must now only determine if we need to avoid the three marked tiles or only use them. Either way I must make my way to the door to insert this key into one of the possible locks."

"I believe that you are correct Jenge," Ssrivan starts. "I do believe that it is the three tiles that are represented by the ceiling images are the ones that I must step on to get to the door. Primarily because three is divisible into twelve but the seven other tile possibilities is not. This would mean that either the next set of challenges will come in three more groups of three or on group of six and one of three or one of nine... As you can see, we have to play this game as it unfolds over the next few minutes. We need to be ready for anything and we also need to be willing to stand fast where we are at this moment. I also feel that if we move around too much, things could take a turn for the worse. So far we seem to be playing by their rules, let us not now make any changes that are not well thought out".

Ssrivan then turns and takes one very large step out onto the ground before him. The group behind him sees him simply stepping forward in one large step, not seeing the grid the way he does raises the anxiety of the situation as it is impossible to tell whether he is stepping on the right grid area or not.

To heighten the anxiety a touch, once Ssrivan finishes his first step, the floor where the rest of the party is standing slowly begins to move downward. It's dissention is smooth and almost unnoticeable but one can see the mist rising. The raised tiles, the ones that all of you are holding onto to create the patterns, do not move however, they stay strong and in place. This means that as the floor level deepens your ability to hold onto the tiles in the manner that you are presently doing so will diminish until it will be impossible to do so.

I see no need to waste ones time with prayers when keeping a clear mind and absolute attentions to what is happening at this moment is critical to our surviving it. In my experience, those who pause in the midst of battle to pray are those that meet with their gods all the sooner. Better to meet your destiny with open eyes and face to face rather than with heads bowed and repentant hearts."

His words are not meant to sting the nobles as much as they are to keep the slaves and porters from panicking. His vibrato is aimed at them and his tone stern and crisp to instill hope or fear of his hand, which ever works best.

Ssrivan takes another step forward and to his left. It is an awkward looking side step and his landing is teetery and unbalanced. But he manages the task and in doing so changes the pitch of the deep tones rumbling under your feet. The floor still descending, now about three feet deep, the mist that was level across the surface of the floor now starts to cascade into the depression like slow moving water over the stones edge. The three-foot stone tile pillars have now become six feet in height and few are able to keep their hands in place. Ssrivan reassures the party that the tiles purposes have been served and that it would no longer be necessary to keep blocking the lights. Though he also warns that moving from where one is standing might have some dire consequences.

Dlarumei turns from her position up front, raises her hands to the rest of the party in a calming manner and gently encourages all to stand where they are, and to be prepared to move if ordered. "It is difficult to know what is to come next," she continues. "But we must be ready and alert to do as Ssrivan tells us. Our very lives may depend on only one group member being out of place or too slow. If leaving items behind is the only way to make sure we do not perish, then so be it. Bring it if you can, but leave it if there is doubt in your mind as to you personally making it with the item. Items can be replaced and no ones judgment in this situation will be called into question, including those of slave or porter."

Her voice slowly starts to become drowned out by the deep throbbing tones. The deeper the floor sinks, the more powerful the tones become to your ears. You can still hear people if they shout, but the tone slowly fills you head and consumes your mind.

Those up at the front where Dlarumei is can only see Ssrivan from the waist up as the floor sink deeper now. Quickly he vanishes from sight as he moves to the final grid piece. The tone changes and chasm deepens, indicating the Ssrivan was successful in his attempt. The sigh of relief from the slaves in the very back also indicate his abilities.

Ssrivan, yelling at the top of his lungs to his scribe so she can write all the information down possible, relays a new lit tile that opens on a hinge. Inside are several keys and a place for the one he has been carrying. He inserts his key and thin green rectangular item is produced. It has copper markings on both sides with teeth-like cutouts on one side and a thicker section on the opposite. It is made of a most peculiar substance almost like chlen hide in a fashion, but semi-transparent. He has found the slot that would fit this key type item and he inserts it into its home.

With a high pitched whining, the pillars quickly retract into the floor, which is about nine feet lower than the surface from whence it began. The pillars stop about a foot above the floors surface for a moment as a large panel slides across the top of the sunken pit. Blue lights inlayed into the sidewalls cast off a dime yet soothing texture of light. Enough for you to see, yet not enough to cast shadows. The panel slides into place with a large thud, and once several other sounds are heard that can only be the panel locking itself into place, the tiles sink through the floor and the room moves slightly, as though it is floating on water. It seems to list to one side, tipping slightly to the right. The Livyani Priest speaks up telling Orun and Almodhim to move more to the center. When they do the room starts to right itself again and the rest of those not in a particular position also move to the center till the room feel balanced and level
