Amanda Artisan

You wheel your powered chair out of the doctor's office grumbling about the copay, and planning on spending the afternoon figuring out the new 'chair control' you've got in your lap.  You'll have to solder it on to your chair arm, but that's doable.

The weird bit is its got the 'scriff inside' insignia that has seemed to pop up on computer devices over the last few months.  No one except those in the know, know how they work, but they do speed computer performance.

A few heavy drops fall, and then you're in your van, and on the way home.

Once there, you get out the solder, and start laying a bead.  After that, you touch the control with your hot solder.  You see a puff of steam rise from it as heat hits.  A raindrop must have lodged inside somewhere.

The steam provides a medium....

A flash of white light, arcing out from the device, slamming into you, and all around you are gold bubbles in the painless white fire....

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

You wake sitting in your chair.  You are chill.  The air is dusty, and dry.  Things are very, very quiet.  You feel strangely light.

Your eyes are closed.

A breath of wind hits you.  Its cold and dry.

Its heading toward evening (it was noon), and you're on a field of gray stones baseball size and smaller.  There are patches of flat rock as well.

The horizon seems...odd.

The area seems to be of low, rolling hills.

You hear Soxy meow at you from ten feet away.  Scattered on the ground are a number of your items.

Soxy, your cat, sprints over to you with fear giving his feet wings.  He lands in a terrific leap, claws out, on your opposite leg, and scrambles back into your lap, and fixes himself there.

The flat rocks look like granite with a partial overlay of a sandstone.  The small stones look like a mix of the above.

The horizon seems awfully close.

You feel normal in body except for feeling a bit light.

You gather your things, and set out along what looks like it might be a path.  This takes you over the pass between two low hills.

In the distance, you can see a glimmer of light, but is at least a mile and a half away.

You hear a ringing noise to your left, and spot in the growing darkness what looks to be a short, mechanical shape in a steady up and down working mode rather like some of the small oil derricks that dot Texas.  It glitters silver, and is on the next hill over, at least three hundred yards away.

The sun goes down suddenly, and the temperature drops ten degrees as unfamilar stars blaze in the night sky.

At first it looks like a well pump, or derrick.  Then, it looks boxy.  Then it looks humanoid.

You pause twenty feet away as the robot bends down again to pick up a rock, and then chunk it downhill in a clatter to a waiting bin the size of a semi trailer.  The rocks look to be several hundred pounds that the robot is lifting.

Its head turns toward you even as it continues to work.

"May I assist, milady?"

The temperature has dropped another five degrees, and its full moonlight dark out.

He starts pushing your wheelchair down hill toward the gleam of lights.

"My mistress owns three small porta-domes.  She will be able to offer you shelter.  It is two klicks away.  I am uncertain as to the proper strategy to aid you.  Perhaps you could assist."

He pauses, waiting for your response.

"I could carry you much faster than this chair can go, but I cannot balance the chair and you.  Should we leave the chair behind, or maintain our present mode of transport.  Also, if I carry you, I can go up to forty miles per hour, but I fear such speed would only cool you further.  What should I do?"

"Two and a half minutes, ma'am."

He picks you and Soxy up, and starts running.  He has the acceleration of a sports car, but tops out at ....

"With your cat unbalancing me, I must limit my speed to thirty five.  If you could keep him immobile that would help."

Soxy is trying to keep warm, and willing to keep you warm too, but he's also a bit freaked out by the shiny metal man, and so he keeps shifting his weight, and moving his head.

About three minutes later, you're at the first of three interconnected domes.  Your teeth are chattering.

Silver knocks on the door.

"Mistress, emergency, please open." He calls out very loudly. "She is hard of hearing. You'll have to talk loudly to me too as she insists we not have better hearing than her."

The electronic door is still shut.

About a minute later, the door opens.

A woman stands in the doorway, and stares at you in shock. Her features flicker other emotions too filtered for you to catch them.

"You...how...do you have a spaceship, uh, I mean of course you do." She begins to slam the door shut with a display of fury. "This MY mining claim!"

The robot reaches out and holds the door open.

"Mistress, please step aside. First Law requires me to not let a human be harmed. This lady is a refugee, and very cold."

The woman blinks. And then steps back.

You enter into blessed warmth, and rather confined pack-rattish space.

She gives you a disbelieving glare, but does not object when Silver deposits you at a table in a fold-up chair.

Silver asks you what you would like to eat and drink as it puts an electric heat blanket around your shoulders.  He suggests several things, and the domeowner objects to one of them as 'too expensive'.

Hot chocolate is that one.

Silver leaves.

"You can stay. I could not leave you out anyways.  First Law of Robotics." The domeowner speaks. "My name is Cynthia Rodriquez the Second."

Her face turns softer as she looks at Soxy.

"Silver, get a half-ounce of the steak bits for Soxy."

Soxy looks interested, but at the same time quite distrustful.

You ask again and ...

"NO! I am not a robot. I was born on Earth. Couldn't stay, the Land Tax is dreadful."

She looks away as if she is seeing far beyond the close in walls, and densely packed room.

Silver comes out with a cup of tea, and a bowl of chicken noodle soup, and something he calls "Nutri chips".  He then places the steak bits out for the cat who seems quite eager until Cynthia tries to hand them to him.  Then Soxy backs off.  The situation is resolved by Silver taking the bowl back and putting it on the table.

Soxy digs in, although she occasionally glances at you to see if its all right for her to be sitting on the table.

Soxy stares at her with his hair up, and then relaxes as you tell him he can eat off the table.  He retracts his extended claws and gets about the serious business of eating.

Silver comes in.

"I believe you need rest after your shock. I hope that I can give her Beverly's room." He looks at Cynthia for permission.

"Sure, she doesn't need it anymore." Cynthia walks out, her body stiff, and her voice cold.

"I will carry you to Beverly Simplot's old room, if you like, Lady Amanda."

Unless you object, he picks you up, takes you to an airlock which leads into a short tunnel about fifteen feet long, and opens another airlock to another dome.  He then walks around a looping corridor next to the exterior wall until he gets to a door.

"Open." He says.

It opens, and he carries you inside, and sits you on the bed.

The room, like everything else is very crowded, but it seems friendlier, brighter than the rest of the dome spaces you've seen.  Its the room of someone who knew how to laugh at theirself.

"If you wish, I can retrieve your chair now?"  Silver asks. "Gold is still working outside, but Brass has positioned himself in Dome Three which is the Machine Support Dome for this prospecting base.  He is undergoing routine maintenance, but if you need his help, merely press this button, and give him your command."

He shows you to the bathroom.  It has a number of odd functions, but you are able to decipher the usages with a minute of thought.

Shortly, you're back in bed, and drifting off to sleep surrounded by strange smells, and unusual creaks.  Soxy curls up next to you.

The next morning you wake, not feeling terrifically refreshed, with a dream of a person watching you from the doorway as you slept still lingering with you.

Upon checking, you find that Cynthia has left her dome to work in the prospecting area, gathering, and grading samples as Golden puts it.

You climb into your chair.

Gold makes you breakfast. You haven't met him before.  His voice is bass, as compared to Silver's which is baritone.

"Good morning, Amanda, if I may call you that? Silver said you seemed informal."

You ask for breakfast, and he gives you the rundown of choices.

In the breakfast cabinet, freeze-dried egg mix, hash browns, sausage, and sausage with calorie-less fat form the top row.  Boxes of pancake batter and syrup fill the second row, and the third row is vacuum-packed fruit.

"I would be glad to talk to you, Amanda. We robots appreciate Human interaction. We were designed to crave at least a thousand words a day with a human. I sense that you are in a situation that is truly novel for you. In accordance with the Second Law of Robotics, I would be pleased to assist you in anyway congruent with the law, and the First Law."

Re: Amanda Artisan

The breakfast is expertly prepared, but suffers a bit from 'TV dinner-itis'.  You suspect all the meals here will be likewise.

"Not so unbelievable, Amanda. We robots are creatures of logic. If one were to take the a priori assumption that time travel is impossible, then what you say is unbelievable, but if one did not make that assumption then what you say becomes more understandable. Also, there are three cases in history that time travel, or something like it seems to be the most satisfactory explanation. Unfortunately, while we have hyperdrive, time travel eludes us as a practical matter."

He pauses.

"I do know that unless you did not approach this moonlet on a spaceship.  Their is not matter stream from a rocket except for the supply rocket six months ago.  The only other method of getting here without a stream is a solar sail, and I or the others could not have failed to have spotted one as they are quite large. Of course, you may have arrived here by a novel reactionless drive which would be a technology greater than we have.  However, it seems unlikely that you would then be confined to a wheelchair when a simple surgery that any doctor bot could manage three centuries ago would be able to fix the problem if you had technology in advance of ours."

He pauses again, and ticks off a point on his fingers.

"So, you arrived here by non-rocket means, and since you are a Human, and thus to a degree trustworthy (we robots are programmed to trust humans), and in my personal judgment, a human of good character, I will assume that you arrived here by time travel, or some similar means."

You set off from the three interconnected domes in the bright, but thin sunlight.  Now that your senses are not overwhelmed by the weirdness of being on a small moon, you can clearly tell that the air is much thinner.  However, you seem to be breathing relatively normally, or at least normal for high in the mountains.

Leaving the small valley with the domes behind you travel from interesting spot to interesing spot.  You find some prospecting digs, but they are not being worked on, and look like they are long abandoned.

You find a mylar bag, about five foot by two foot, laying on the ground in a rectangle near a dig site.

You also find your waking up spot. You can clearly see your wheelmarks, and with a bit of work deduce from them your path.  Problem is, its starts in the middle of a tracked area with no sign of hoe you got there.

An organ tune from the bag plays.

Its "Amazing Grace".

A beautiful, sculpted voice speaks.

"This is the final rest of Beverly Sanderson's body until the Ressurection. She touched many lives, and we will miss her."

A pause as the organ music swells to its conclusion...

"And now for any eulogies by friends...."

"Yeah, the greedy witch bought the farm.  Boo hoo.  I'm supposed to feel.....sad? Hah. She didn't have friends.  She just had people she used. So rest in peace, su...you conniving little thief."  Cynthia's voice jumps out of the speaker like sword blades.

The ship is a dart pointed skyward, but you move away from it, and quickly feel centered in your body again.  The visions flee, and you're left with a slight headache, and a wish for something to nibble on.

You realize its gotten toward lunch.

Looking about the ship, you see on the far side a hatch about fifteen feet up in the air.

It looks like it landed on a tail of fire rather like the moon landers, but dart shape, and much larger.  Its like something out of a nineteen fifties rocket tale with daring heroes armed with rayguns, and Princesses of Mars.

Lunch is being served. Cynthia grumbles at feeding you, and instructs Silver to 'not overstuff you', but the robot brings back a full plate of pork chop, green beans, and mashed potatoes anyways.

"So why have you come here?"

Cynthia begins.

Later she speaks again.

"I understand you wanted a surgery. I was too hasty.  But, I need to do if there is any medicine, or foods that you are allergic, I mean deathly allergic too.  Like, I knew one man who almost died from eating a peanut.  That kind of thing. Ah, in preparation for the surgery."

She seems rather too enthused about the question.

I say this with all sencerity and honesty.

"But does it really matter?" Cynthia replies with a bright smile.

"No...not really. Mistress Amanda, if you wish we can take you to the medical bay, and begin the procedure."

They lay you down on a comfortable couch, and pass a glowing metal bar near your head.

Next thing you know, you see Bronze smiling tentatively at you.

"We had some difficulties with your surgery. Cynthia tried to enter in to examine you at a particularly delicate time.  As a consequence, you will likely experience more soreness and a slower recovery time than would have been optimal.  However, I am confident that within several weeks you will be fully recovered, able to run, dance, and leap. Most of that will be rehab for your mucles. I want you to wear this electronet as much as you can. It will stimulate your muscles.  However, it is very tiring, and I don't want you to make yourself sick, alright?"

He hands you a fine net of wire, and tiny nodes in the shape of a lower body stocking.  It will cover your legs and all the way up to your breast bone.

Then he touches your toes with an electrical device. Your legs move. You will them to move...and they do, although sluggishly, and with a lot of effort.

"It will improve." Bronze assures you.

You find some self-slicing ham, a container that opens up, slices off the amount you want, and closes after you've retrieved your morsels. Soon enough, you're eating a ham sandwhich, with a side of navy beans, and carrots.  Again, its not great food, but it does the job.

Cynthia comes in, and gives you a strange expression which after a second you realize is her attempt to smile.

She takes you out to see some holes in the ground. She seems wonderfully pleased by them, tho'.  They do have a different colored rock in them than you've seen elswhere...its faintly pink.

"This is my wealth.  My home on Earth, a proper estate. No more pre-packaged food to have to eat. No more confined little domes."

She tries to get you to walk a few feet over to see the holes in the ground.  If you consent, she helps you, and then quickly walks back to your wheelchair.  If not, she dumps you from your wheelchair.

"This is why I can't have you reporting to the Justice Minister. You slipped in here aboard a stealthed starship. Investigating me. Well, Beverly knows what happens to those who try to take what's mine. She whined about 'we're partners, half and half. I discovered the ore. Little thief. She was just waiting for me to turn my back. I had to get rid of her. And then you come, in your starship, to stop me. You won't stop me. I'm going back to Earth. YOU WON'T STEAL WHAT'S MINE!"

She's babbling, and there is a look in her eyes that is not at all reasonable. In fact, she looks quite mad.

Re: Amanda Artisan

He seems relieved by the compliment as if the conflict between his Laws gave him pain.  He closes the ship, and has you strapped in in the copilots seat, and then launches.

The ship roars into the sky, and then within but a minute, you're in space.  The moon you're above is far smaller than the Earth, and so ascent time to space is less as well.

"Hyperdrive."

He makes some quick calculations, but its pretty pro forma.  He throws a lever, hits a button.

And time unwinds.

Just as before when you were near the spaceship, but oh so much more strongly.  You try to say something, but your mind and your body seem to be in different times.

You see the spaceship launch.  And then Cynthia order the bots to sleep, and do surgery on their unresisting selves. You see Cynthia try to murder you.  You see your operation which restored your use of your legs. You see Cynthia standing outside and screaming her rage into the wind at someone coming to spoil her beautiful plan.

You see yourself being carried by Silver.  You see your arrival.

An empty plain one second. POP. You're there in your wheelchair looking dazed and thoroughly out of it for several minutes until you wake.

You see Beverly outside the domes begging to be let in as frostbite touches her nose, and the robots are 'down for maintenance'. You see Beverly die, and Cynthia do a little victory dance.

Time speeds onward.

The pair of miner's arrive. Years earlier, a probe roboship flies through the system.

Centuries turn into millenia.

Suddenly you see a planet smash into another planet, and your moon is born of the rubble.

Another millenia goes by.

You see a streaking form pass by and where there was nothing, in the form's wake,  there are now stars, planets, galaxies.

You hear from a great distance in the future.

"You are a time traveller. Which means you haven't received the Hyperdrive Stabilization Protocol. You're going to die. Its all my fault. I should have thought of this, but everyone gets it at age five." Gold sobs as he tries to revive your body.
