Amanda Adobe

You disintegrate under infinite possibility, and as you reform you see Gold and Silver and Bronze standing about taking bets from Greed on just how long you'll survive in this next world. They're betting parts of their memory, which in this case is pieces of peppermint candy....

One piece of peppermint escapes to fall in the long grass and you dive after it...

To wake face down in long grass with the smell of peppermind in your nostrils.

Its hot, nearly ninety-five degrees, but very dry. You feel heavy as if you're wearing a thirty pound backpack or something.

Re: Amanda Adobe

The shard of Humility is still there, but its like you're reaching through a curtain of falling molasses to touch it.

You stand up in the waist-high grass and see that you're in a bowl valley in the mountains. About a mile away in the base of the valley is a small lake of perhaps fifteen acres in size. On its right side, and your side is a village of twenty two thatched huts of slightly peculiar proportions.

They seem wider and shorter than they should.

On the hill high to your right is a small stone or clay brick building.

There are trees and bushes scattered among the grasses.

You see some brightly colored people fishing in the shallows of the lake with nets and clubs.

The sky is blue and clear, except for the line of white dots and occasional flashes that runs across it.

From the looks of it and how I feel I am assuming this is a high gravity planet I landed on. I will walk to them and say," Hello nice day isn't it?"

The gravity is about 120% of Earth's gravity. Its enough to be noticeable.

You walk down to them, and at first you're thinking...What odd pants and shirts these humans have....and then your perspective shifts.

They're avian humanoids with brightly colored feathers in blotch patterns.

The first one closest to you replies in perfect English.

"Hello nice day isn't it?"

"Hello"

"Hello, I...Yes...I...I am...I ask..."

It stops and the others begin to babble the words you have spoken in several dozen different orders.  And hearing them all, you realize they are speaking with your accent, and intonation.

There is a shrill cry, and everyone stops. They all turn and stare fixedly at you.

"I didn't do anything honest...I am...I didn't..."  They start talking again.

Confused, you pray, and you're struck by an impulse to read the Bible to them.  Even more confused, you do so, beginning at Genesis and skipping around, occasionally explaining things as they babble and listen.

Thirty minutes later one of them speaks to you....

"Please, stop, we understand your words now. Mostly. I am...Redfeather. That is a good simple name like the ones your kind prefers. We are...The People of the Valley, and you are....Daughter of Eve? What is your name? Why have you come to our valley?"

Suddenly you realize they've learned the English language in about thirty-five minutes.

I also lead my family and keep the hut built, and give some occasional catch to the people on the hill.  However, for pleasure I sing, tell stories at the campfire and slide on mud paths into the lake."

He pauses, and some of the others talk to him.

"One of the others says you could talk to Old Woman Whitehead in her hut." He points a stubby wing at it. "She knows much, and gives good advice. Maybe she can tell you your purpose. Of course...do you like to fish? We need to go back and catch mid-day meal. You are welcome to do as you will, but stay inside the valley."

And with that they, except for Redfeather, start wandering off to the lake.

"We listen, we mimic your words, we feel the relation between them. Then we know. You can't do this? Everyone we know can." He pauses. "Except you, of course."

He takes you to Old Woman Whitehead, and babbles at her at high speed for about three minutes. During this time, you can see why she is called her name.  She's obviously a lot stout, and she has a hard time standing up, and apparently she mostly sits on the stoop of her hut and enjoys the sun.

Her feathers at the top of her  head have turned white.

She turns to you while shooing him off.

"The Daughter of Eve who wishes to know her purpose. Are you warrior, teacher, farmer, shieldmaiden, healer of wounds, fisher, hunter of vermin? Do you come to tell us a message, or show us a new way? Or perhaps you come to learn of us? Do you come to free us from the Ring of Doom, the hair of the goddess?"

And so the Mother sought to slap her child, who was grown, and hit her too hard, and her child shattered into uncounted pieces.  But the glittering fragments of her hair we can see in the sky now."

Old Woman Whitehead points up to the sky where you see the white sparkles very far above.

"And the hair began to punish the Mother, and she was grieved by what she had done, and then my ancestors came to the Mother and pointed out to her what suffering they had for her deed, and the Mother gave them a gift so that they might survive, and then the Mother took herself away and put herself into sleep to forget such evil days. And my ancestors came to this valley, and made it their home, and we have lived her ever since."

Re: Amanda Adobe

The door opens before you hit the door.

"Greetings, Amanda." Says another very old avian. "We've been expecting you."

He steps past you, and five others of his kind trundle on past you as well.  He's looking into the sky.  You see lines of fire plunging earthward. Smoke trails behind them.

He points at one, and the avian next to him nods.

"Yes, Master."

And you realize that the meteor is heading directly toward the Valley. The others are missing the protected bowl.

It gets closer, and larger. Part of your mind is sure its heading right toward you.

And then it starts curving away, and plummets into the hills beyond the Valley.

They count, and at five seconds, there is a mild earthshock.

"Well done, student." The Master pats his student on the shoulder, and turns to you. "I am Master Brokenfeather." He points to one of his feathers in his arm which looks like it nearly broke off and then healed wrong. "You are Amanda the Human. We are the Parakeet People in this Valley. And more specifically these are my students, the guardians of the Valley who with the gift of the Mother protect us from the Hair."

He looks back at it, and it floats up to his hand.

"It is the same thing. The immaterial mind is directing insensible matter." He sits down with help from his students. "Its pleasant for an old bird to sit in the sun. Amanda, at one time, my people could not do as we do, but the gift of the Mother changed us. In your mind, I see the potential for such as I can do, we can do here at the Ancient House. But it requires strength of mind, and fearlessness, and a small measure of luck."

He doesn't say anything for a long moment, and then you realize he's snoring.

The student leader nods, and speaks a fluting command to one of the others who rushes off in a comical waddle that you could best in a jog, but is their sprint.  He comes back with a large sheet of tanned leather.

Its two feet by eighteen inches of intricate three-dimensional Escher-like drawing.  Just looking at it is enough to make your brain hurt. When the student sees the wince, he claps his paw hands together.

"Excellent. I was afraid you might not be affected. This will open your mind, the sleeping areas. It will hurt, but so does any unusused muscle when used. I want you to study this, carry it with you, study it day and night, hold it in your mind in one piece, stretch yourself very hard. Once you're done, I think you will be able to hear minds."

Re: Amanda Adobe

The student leader looks speculatively at your hands.

"How good are you at building?"

And thus you spend the next several very long days (eighteen hours of sunlight and eighteen hours of dark.) doing repairs to huts.  Your climbing skills are greatly superior to theirs (they tend to fly short distances instead of climbing), and they have a crude mallet shaped to their hand which you find you can use with more force and precision than they can. So you're up on roofs, hammering pegs into wooden shingles, and getting quite a tan.

On your breaks, which are frequent as they do not have the modern notion of 'work-work', you study the scroll. You gradually begin to memorize it, and then to see parts of it in your brain.  You have to balance so many different aspects while not paying too much attention, and  yet at the same time if you pay too little you fall asleep.

And then you hear it, in your head.

*Got a nice, tasty redfish. Mmmm, I'm hungry. Hope my husband kept the fire built up.* As a lady avian of mature years walks past you on her way from the lake to her hut.

These people are locked in to this village, and this life. Beyond the safety of the telekinetic shield they dare not go.

Re: Amanda Adobe

Over the next week, you finish re-roofing all the huts in the village that need it (Its spot repair, not whole roof repair.), and you spend a lot of time swimming and walking.

You get to know the landscape of the Valley intimately.  Its maybe thirty acres of land with plentiful small wildlife.

You practise Reading Surface Thoughts extensively with the other students. You read their thoughts, and they read yours. This often sets off a conversation as when you find yourself wishing for a Coke, and they ask you what that is.  Brokenfeather tells you that next week they will begin the distraction training. The way he says it sounds ominous.

There is one more time when the students come out and ward the village from meteor fall.

When you talk to Brokenfeather about it, he takes you up to the highest edge of the Valley, and bids you look beyond.  Its a wasteland pocked by craters, and charred by fire.  There are small bits of life, but in the far distance you can see meteors streaking down to hammer the land.

"Only the Valley is safe, and only through our unceasing labors."

" Oh Lord these are the survivors of a great war, and they don't know what has happened to their world, Oh great Lord how do I stop the meteors if it is possible, and why have you chosen me for the task oh great Lord, open my mind to their plight and continue to give me strength and mental toughness to complete this task as your humble servant oh mighty Lord, I pray in Jesus's name Amen.

She seems a little violated she thought her hut was her private space but she seems open to a good reason. I put my hands on my hips and drop my clothes waiting for a good answer.

They're willing for you to keep your 'fur' off, but they do ask you questions you'd find impertinent out of a human. They're fascinated by this whole 'fur' thing, although they tell you that in winter they do wear cloaks of hide and large leaves.

"In late fall, we dive to the lake bottom, and harvest the largest leaves, and then dry them over a fire. They are waxy, and shed water well."

They are quite happy to stay as it seems the seedcake with honey mixed in it is quite a treat. For you, its about the equivalent of baked sunflower seeds with salt and honey.  Its quite hard, but their beaks make short work of their bits which you observe as they easily slice through several seeds at a time when you have to chew through one at a time.

Your furlessness and your prayers to Jesus inspire some comment and questions over the next days as you learn TK. The furlessness is rapidly accepted, and you find it easeful and it doesn't seem to provoke any problems with your prayers.  Perhaps because you're the only Human in this universe, and so laws pertaining to modesty don't really apply.

Unlike a lot of bad SF, there seems to be no sexual tension between you and the Avians. You're both too different. You do find that they lay eggs, and you get the pleasure of being asked if one of the fledglings can be named "Born in the Year of Amanda's Coming."  It sounds a lot better in the Avian.

As the month closes, you find that you can lift stones, chunks of wood, and protesting Avians by this strange new ability to 'talk to matter'.

You've also got a really good tan and you feel generally healthier.

With your further experience being furless, you gain in self-awareness and control, with resulting gains in Charisma and Animal Magnetism +@1 to both.  Your Avian friends notice that you seem more at home.

Your answering of questions about Jesus sweeps the village. They have no traditions of suppressing unpopular viewpoints so other than some minor resentments that are quickly brushed over with kind words, they have to face things dead-on. And they have a very simple and inadequate religion that doesn't cover most of their lives. You bring them a mental revolution and a spiritual one as you feel power in your words and it sweeps the village like wildfire. By the end of the month, they're all Christians.

Although, they don't get a number of human points of view. They think of the cross for a long time, nearly a week, as a roost or perch until you realize they're thinking that the Romans who put Him on the cross were honoring Him.

"They give him a high perch, and label him 'King of Jews', yes?"

Your Strength increases by +@1. And you realize that if you want to keep pushing it you're going to have to start toting weights or something or running the hill.

The Avians eat the food politely, and enjoy the visit, and you can tell they think Humans are very strange indeed.

I will also keep up my practicing of Telekinesis and mind reading as  train as well. I will set up bible stuby classes, I don't have a bible but I will ask for guidence from God on the night before the meeting ,hopefully God will grant me the knowledge and ability to help the Avians become stronger in their faith.

You push your training hard. Too hard. After one week, you've pulled a muscle in your upper right shoulder.

The swimming with weights is dangerous you can tell.

The weekly Bible study goes well. And you're finding your understanding of the Bible is growing immensely. Being a teacher, being forced on to leaning directly on Jesus, and just having the odd perspective of the Avians on things is stretching your mind and soul in strange new ways. +@2 Religion.

The Avians ask you if you will pray a blessing on their fish harvest.

You start work on throwing meteorites off course.  The first time you do it, its like getting smacked in the face by a hard punch. The mass and speed of the meteor fragment is simply shocking. Someone else handles that one, but you build your telekinetic powers and soon you're able to handle one fragment, and then two in a swarm.

Bullet Speed TK 1@2
Heavy TK 1@3
Simple TK 1@5

"When you are able to handle five, then you can travel to the City. I've never seen a swarm larger than five descend on one specific area such as a person walking across the plains might face. I think five would let you be sure you're safe. I know this is being cautious because five is rare, but I want you to be safe." Master Brokenfeather explains.

Your teaching skill improves, and they begin to get science, but its very slow and at times you find yourself impatient with their backwardness.

The temp rises another ten degrees and stabilizes.  Now, it rains for thirty minutes every day, except when meteor showers interrupt things. Its about ninety-five degrees, with fifty percent humidity.  The birds start molting, and they are very irritable.

I'm going to put in a +@1 for New Use because teaching Stone Age Avians is far from 5th grade Americans.  Add in another +@1 because of a month's INTENSE training (once you get into the 2@ levels you have to double the time or the intensity for the same advancement effect.)

So 2@7 Teaching skill plus whatever other bonuses you have had on that.

"Fore that I was on this island with Akos, a hermit elementalist magi, he taught me magic, in return for me doing all his work. After a year of that, and noting he was teaching me less and less, I tried to leave. He tried to enslave me with a spell. I jumped off a cliff." Fury dances in his eyes, and you can see that he'd be a bad man to get really angry at you.

He is a big guy, tall, and decently muscled, but no way does he look like a man who can do as he says. On the other hand, he seems completely calm about his claim.

"After that, I went to this weird place. All punching bags and stuff. Empty rooms. Saw no one. Ate rats, and watermelons. I eventually got appendicitis I think. I think I killed myself by trying to operate on myself, but by then I was crazy with pain and half out of my mind."

"Next world, I was walking down a street, everyone speaking some gabble-gabble, and I feel a verser, so I go meet him. He's a jerk, and he draws on me with his sword, and kills me. And of course, then its next to Akos and his island."

Brokenfeather looks at you with obvious incredulity, and your guest bites his lip trying not to laugh out loud.

"I do believe I like you guys a lot more than the Lekostians. I'm grateful to them, but they're not nearly as much fun."

"Lekostians?" Brokenfeather says.

"Other aliens. Except they talked in concepts, not really in words. No sense of humor."

"I was not joking."

Re: Amanda Adobe

I try hard to keep from laughing and then I say,
" I believe he was sent here for a reason like myself Broken Feather and he wants to learn the mind moving power to help protect us from Meteors when we make our big travel to the new city."

Re: Amanda Adobe

"I would like to help, both because of Amanda, and because, well, that's what I do....I mean, usually. I try to help people out." He shrugs, and again those odd-shaped muscles under his shoulders ripple his skin.

Master Brokenfeather recovers, and nods.

"Very well, I will begin training him tommorrow. Will there be any others showing up..."

Dust stirs on the ground of the hut. A bone pops out of the ground. Another bone follows it. Muscles begin to clad these bones....

Re: Amanda Adobe

Tom slowly appears, and is rather surprised.  He recognizes Amanda and says, "Er....right.  This isn't what I expected, but Hello.  You remember the very short period where we were all recruited to fight in the last world? I've been given a ring that lets me do largely the same thing.  I need help fighting a horrifically evil thing I know very little about, but could use the help if you're able and willing."

Re: Amanda Adobe

I look at Tom and she says," Yes I remember you you helped protect Oak and I in the park as we made our escape, My new friend here needs to train while he does that I guess I can help you , but I must return here to help these people reach their new city, God has asked me to do so."
I still stand there completely naked not even realizing it.
I turn to Broken Feather and I say," Broken Feather I am called to help others, I will be back to do as I promised please train this one and when I return we will find your new home."
I bow my head and pray," Oh Great Lord guide us and help us fight this unknown evil and guide my new friend here and assist in his training and assistance to Broken feather and his wonderful people, I ask for your guidence and strength, I pray in Jesus's name, Amen."

Re: Amanda Adobe

You receive a certainty that your prayer is answsered with a 'yes', and a sudden God-given awareness that you're naked. The rules that did not apply when you were the only human female on a planet of avians are now back in force.

Re: Amanda Adobe

Tom politely, and with rather astonishing skill keeps his eyes right at face level and above the entire time.

He bows to the Threet and says a short greeting in their language, assuming they look remotely like Threet and says, "Know that your own distant kin are helped by this mission as well.  Thank you for allowing her to come."

He says to Amanda, "Let me know when you're ready."

Re: Amanda Adobe

They look like Threet, but primitive, uncyborged, and this one looks old which you've never seen before. The Threet elderly male stares at you in utter shock.

"You have a strange way of speaking. But greetings to you." He nods as he speaks back in Avian.

"In many worlds there are humans.  It stands to reason that in many worlds there are Threet as well.  They have had a troubled past, but they are my staunchest allies in the world I am trying to help.  Well...two worlds back.  It gets complicated."

Re: Amanda Adobe

I feel the Lord's Grace, then I try to cover myself with my hands and run to my hut. I dig out my old clothes and put them on, they feel a little funny but I feel better. Then I head back out and say to Broken Feather,
" I will be back good friend keep learning I will be back soon."
I then turn to Day and say," I am ready to go Tom when you are."
