Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

The overwhelming power rips you apart, and forces the Queen to throw up shields, but the power is concentrated around you, and it does her little harm. Still, she is the only living being on a planet full of those she murdered. That will have to suffice for justice for now.

Men, with tape measures come, and stretch you, and squeeze you, and make your shorter, no wider, no taller...they're here to cut you to fit the new set of clothes you're buying rather than the other way around.

"This really won't do." One says.

Then you hear it again.

You open your eyes to a whimsical wiry mesh with a somewhat human face.

"If you wish to get drunk before jumping, as some do, the robocafe's are far more suitable places than luggage gathering station #47."

Beyond it is a roof that is at least a hundred stories away from you, and beyond that you can see unfamilar stars.

Tessa is to your right, and Siljonic to your left.

"Sorry about that, I had gone as far as I was willing to go with the Queen of Death. At least the others got back safely and we didn't inflict her apon anyone else. Are you guys alright? The first verse experience is usually unsettling."

=="Boss, that woman was EVIL. You didn't touch her soul. I did. She had not a drop of care for other people. We were all objects to her, and she liked breaking them to see the interesting faces they made when they were broken."

Tessa gets up, and stares about her at the massive volume which could hold a dozen Empire State buildings without trying hard. A delighted smile crosses her face.

"This is awesome. You didn't tell me it'd be this cool. And I'm immortal to boot." She grabs your arm, and smiles like a kid in a giant toy store. "I feel like I've broken free of the chains of my past life. "Where's Earth?" Tessa says.
"Madam, it is 436 parsecs to Old Earth. I cannot be more precise due to spatial ambiguities."
"Are there others like me?" Siljonic asks.
"Sir, I regret to say that bodyform identification is not a specialty of mine. I have not seen anyone with a greater than 98% similarity to you in the last four weeks since my last memscrub."

=="Identification? The easiest way to earn credits is to work in the Waffle House over there. They have actual human waiters."  He points across the way, about a half-mile.

You don't see a single 'Human' anywhere. You see a lot of  bipedals, some trees, a small orca in a floating tank, a half-dozen 'things'. The closest thing to a human is a young girl talking to a tree as if they were good buddies, but she has a tail, claws, and a mane. Some are standing about, others are hugging as if at an airport, and others are strolling along.

Worse, everyone that looks vaguely capable is carrying a sword.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

The items for sale range from the awesome to the completely bizzarre to the inexplicable. There is a definite tendency toward historical items such as the Windows 2100 Super PDA, but many of the historical periods referenced are unfamilar to you. A 7.2 Viral Introduction Staff from the First Solar War holds pride of place in one shoppe. Underneath it is a "Hand-made! Mil-one!" Primitive Art painting of "The Hanging of the Bankers". The painting has a crude power, and whoever did it had some anger issues.

You see swords for sale. Breaking blades, and vibroknives, and drop foils abound.

A very snooty saleswoman tries to bar you from entering a dress shop.

"These dresses are all hand-made."

"So's this." Said Tessa indifferently, and for some reason the attitude provokes stunned admiration from the sales clerk who backs up to let you three in.

About an hour later, Tessa smiles.

"Alright, boys. I've had a sip from the well. I'm not dying of thirst right now. Lets go get something to eat at the waffle house."

You walk out the door, and bump into a man.  He snarls as he bounces off you.

"You lout. Defend yourself."

A foil sprouts from a handle in his hand, and he takes a fencer's position.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

*I will ask what the Windows 2100 Super PDA is, and what can it do, as well as what the 7.2 Viral Introduction Staff is, and what can it do? If they sound cool and useful, I will trade any of my "anchient" tech for them, my current PDA, is one of the first phones/PDAs, I have 2 extra batteries, the charging cradle, and power adapter, in very good condition. The only thing I wouldn't trade is the laptop, I haven't even scratched the surface on what it can do now. If they aren't willing to trade, I ask them if there is anything I can do aside from credits to equal their value. I figure if Tessa is looking to shop, I can do so as well. I will also ask why are there so many swords around, and why people carry them, I will ask if guns are forbidden, I find information is the best weapon in these situations.*

*smiles at Tessa* I'm glad it was a sip, we still need to figure out how to earn some credits.

*looks at the foil and then his armor and axe*

"I did not mean to bump into you, I apologize. If you still feel that it needs to end in a fight, I must inform you, that I don't fight with a sword, and am not really worried about behing hit with one. Besides, you don't want to make Siljonic angry."

*if he continues in this manor, will use his axe like a hockey stick and crosscheck him onto the ground, and if he continues, I will use the axe head in an obvious way*

"Ah, a fine item. The Windows program, created by um, Jobs or uh, yeah, Mr. James Linux, I had to remember that for a second is the basis for all of Human Space's computer architecture going back to the pre-Space Age. So its definitely historically significant. It had some features like holographic screen, and voice control in over a dozen languages, and it had a laser link so that it could tap into the worldsatnet...thats back on Old Earth right around the time of the First Solar War.  And that brings us to this fine weapon. The 14th Belt Brigade used these to 'force inject' computer viruses into the local nets of ships they invaded.  The objective of course was to cause chaos and override the massive advantage that a local net gives to defenders."

The guy looks at your pieces, and he closes his eyes for a second.

"Very nice replicas, but see, these are actual antiques."

========

"Well people have to defend themselves...guns...." His mouth hangs open and he looks appalled. "Look, just because I am a salesclerk in an antique shoppe doesn't mean I'm some sort of barbaric mass murdereing thug. And I resent that you're even asking me this question."  He glares at you.

====

He lunges, and smacks your armor hard with the point of his drop foil. You come after him, and he has a great deal of escape space because of the reach of his weapon, but its not enough.  You knock him flat.

With you not following up, he opens his hand, and the sword clatters to the ground.

"Identification? What need? Sure, I can put you to work. Do you cook, or would you like to be a waiter?" The man is tall, blue-skinned, and he has gills and webbed hands. However, he also has something that sounds vaguely like a Brooklyn accent.

The Waffle House looks and smells like one, except one that had been prepped and worked on by master craftsman. And then populated by a staff and customers out of a nightmare. About half the customers look fairly human.

"I pay the standard high wages for a human service job. Please give me at least four hours notice before you quit once you make your bundle of cash, and leave to go pursue your dream. I pay the same for everyone. Its just that if you're a good waiter, you get big tips. But its very good pay even without good tips. So, you want the job?"

"Sure, sure."

He puts you to work after a short tutorial which molds itself to your style of learning very rapidly.  The program seems to know when you've absorbed a point, and it moves on.

Thirty minutes later, you're serving a seven foot tall lizard-like man a plate of hash browns with eggs over easy on the side.

The TK doesn't work at all, and the other skills are possible, but they seem more difficult. Still, you manage to get some practise amid orders of "Two strips, one 314, and a glass of moo juice."

Four hours later, your shift is over.

The manager hands you a card.

"Rentercard. It will direct you to what you want thats in the market."

The card flashes in your hand and a neutral voice asks from the air.

"Sir, if you have a preferred name, please state it now. Please describe your preferences in the matter of housing. Note that the Olympus Jumpgate housing market is considerably more expensive than most of the rest of Starsong system."

The boss is happy to hear this, and suggests local 'noon' the next day.

He directs you to a charitable library, and to a training shoppe.

The card takes you to a four thousand square foot apartment suite that you can have for a month for 3/4ths of the cash on hand.

"This is a modest place for three people. We can certainly do a lot better." The card informs you.

Tessa blushes and grins, and then averts her eyes.

"Not now, uh, we'll discuss this later."

The library has several petabytes of data on Starsong. However it helps guide you to what it thinks you really want which is a child's primer on Starsong.

Starsong Trinary System (Stellar Masses: Harmony, Melody, and Rhythm.) Harmony has over 98% of the population which is slightly over one trillion humans.

The year is 2436 Anno Domini.  Starsong is approximately 400 parsecs from Old Earth.

Starsong was first discovered by the interstellar scout nicknamed "Superswoop" during the same years as the First System War in the Sol System.

It solicits more precise questions than 'tell me all about Starsong.'

===================

"If you're an Ascetic we can find you something smaller. Otherwise my company doesn't really sell anything much smaller than this efficiency."

The card says.

===================

She blushes red and says nothing.

==On the sofa. Siljonic is by nature a bit paranoid, and Tessa is probably willing to be convinced, but you have to convince her.

Head back to work the next day,

==Work is more of the same except one man asks what Great Plan you have.

 practicing my psionics,

==There are no 'shops for groceries.'.  Eventually you figure out that you can simply order everything from your house and it will be delivered in under two minutes by hydraulic tubes directly to the storage areas you designate.

, and figure out how much that PDA will cost me in the shop.

==Nearly a month of salary for the three of you. Prices for things seem radically skewed here. 12 hrs of labor paid for a very nice and quite large by your standards apartment for a month....easily in comparison 2000 dollars, but a PDA that can't have cost more than a 1000 brand-new is going for 50,000....

Will try to find out more about this place,

==You do see another duel. One man-thing chops off anothers head. The first walks away. The second has a footlong domino shaped robot float up to the head, reattach it in a blur of moving tentacles, and in less than five minutes the decapitated man is up and walking.

and get Siljonic to train us.

=="These people take their swordfighting very seriously. I have no doubt that there are many who are better than me." Siljonic warns you. "So try to avoid getting into a fight for the next couple months."  He then begins to train you with some real urgency.

I will go back to the library computer, and ask about starsong laws, interesting in this dualing and what is allowed.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

OOC: Ah. Understandable.

IC:
On the third night, Tessa comes by, smelling sweet, and takes your hand, and tows you off to bed without a word.

Once in her bedroom, which she has started to decorate, she smiles just a bit.

"I chose you and all this madness over a prince. So...I should act like it. Its just I'm afraid of the future. If I walk into the dark room of the future, will you hold my hand as we search for a light?"

The work is easy, and most of the customers are just fine.

The plan man nods.

"Get a plan. Its easy to work here, and find yourself five decades later still the same person you were, only with your dreams dead. I did that about a hundred fifty years ago. It took me a while afterwards to remember my dreams. But if you have a plan, you can take the big money you're making, and get yourself a jumpstart on your dreams. Nowadays, I run a museum I founded. And I've got bigger plans for the next century."

Mannequin TK does not work.

Duelling is legal as a means of 'resolving social tension'. 98% of the population carries a melee weapon (and 92% of them are swords.) Swords are chosen because of 'the natural relation between ranged weapons and the Lament Disaster'.

This review offers to lead you into related areas such as the Laws of War and Ranged Weapons Combat.

Siljonic is really putting you through the ringer. He confesses he 'killed' one man already.

Tessa appreciates the gesture, and you have a lovely evening with her while Siljonic makes himself scarce.

However, on your fourth day there you meet a man-thing about seven feet tall with tusks growing out of his shoulders who seems to think that 'waiter' means 'person I can freely abuse'.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

The Laws of War do not allow collateral damage. A typical vid of a 'war' shows a bunch of guys in uniforms charging through the street, grabbing everyone, apologetically but firmly cuffing them, and stowing them to the side while they attempt to break into a facility and smash the opposite side who's trying to defend the facility.

Its all quarterstaffs, fists, and swords and handcuffs.  The civilians are released in a few minutes and are indignant, but accepting.

"This war refers to the second action in the Tellvo ThreatGroup vs. Mighty Mouse Corporation War." The computer informs you.

As to ranged weapons....you're treated to a very nice and sincere video about how the use of ranged weapons is completely forbidden.  Since Starsongers have the ability to make man portable micromissile autocannons loaded with nuclear explosives....also known as a gun that can fire several thousand hyper-accurate missiles per minute, and each 'bullet' has the impact of about 1/5th of a kilotonne of TNT...their is no way to stop events such as the Tau Ceti Disaster aka the Lament Disaster where One Galactic Hour and Eleven Minutes of energy were unleashed in less than forty minutes thus killing over a trillion humans.

You don't quite get what they're saying entirely, but the last bit does catch your attention....

"Use of Ranged Weapons is an Outlawry Offense. The User is no longer a Human being, nor an Animal, and is thus not entitled to any protection of Law."

====

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

You begin researching, and find the data is very hard to get at, and you seem to be making an unnatural amount of mistakes. If you even hover your hand over a phrase, it suddenly shoots your inquiry off in that direction rather than the one you wanted.  Before, you had been driving a Maserati, now you're driving a Yugo on black ice.

The Boss is greatly enthused to have you M-F, four hours a day. He raises your pay ten percent.

Tessa has mercy on you at the two hour mark, and drags you off to a sightseeing tour.

"I spotted this, and I thought, wow, you'd love this."

Its a ride in a shuttle craft to fly outside and loop the Olympus Jumpgate station, and yes, the shuttle does have a glass bottom (and top).

Every session with Siljonic is a test. There are new tricks all the time. You can feel your body toughening up too.

The shopowner looks a bit skeptical, but slides it into a device.

His eyebrows shoot up.

He looks up and smiles as he extends the newer device to you.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

You find some more information on micro-missile weapons from the First Solar War.  Its a vid of US Space Marines assaulting a lunar colony full of killer robots.  Ten marines slaughter literally thousands of bots in the space of two minutes, but there are tens of thousands of bots and the marines are overrun.

From there you're able to get a drawing of an MK-MM075 Prototype made by Raytheon Corporation in 2112 AD that is similar to the Marines weapon.

This leads you to several pages of Alien Centauri weapons that are quite detailed.

And then you wander on to a page which shows a temple with a cross, a buddha, a woman figure, Athena, and Thor and several other deities.

It shows a vid of a man speaking covertly to another man.
"I want to buy a historical device. For my collection."
The buyer looks nerdy, and harmless to you. A man more inclined to fantasize about having a cool weapon than to do anything with it.
"Such as..."
"A pocket nuke."
"Ah."
"Just for my collection."
"There is a problem."
"What?"
"Thor and the Buddha are watching you."
"Noooo...."
The fantasist screams in horror as the other man pulls out two wands and taps the fantasist on the chest.  He falls and a Docbox rolls up after a minute.

"The Citizen is dead. Permanently. I cannot revive him." The Docbox bot says flatly. "NO charge for service."

The screen then returns to the temple but now there is a banner.

"The House of Peace exists for your protection citizen. Be peaceful."

========================

You're able to buy a 'laptop' although they have to special order 'such a huge control device'. The guy who sells it to you the next day slams it as hard as he can against a wall.

"I figured since you wanted something so large, I might as well make it out of RIF, Reduced Impact Femtostructure. Even a monoblade won't cut through that."

You're able to buy a Breaking Blade, which is a one use, and return to sheathe monoblade. It will slice steel like a normal knife would butter.

A solar blanket offers 1Kw of power.

Tessa grins as she sorts through the items.

"Just what I always wanted."

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

Do I have enough information to build a MK-MM075, without actually trying to build it? If not, I have a good idea what it is, mini nukes, means better, smarter technology, so either way, I will increase my scientific knowledge to be able to build these devices, as well as the others on my older laptop. I will also take detailed notes on Alien Centauri weapons.

I will also look up those sticks and how they work.

I will buy two of everything, since Tessa is a techie as well. I assume Tessa and Siljonic are working as well. I will ask them if they mind a change in scenery? From what I gather, away from here means more pay, cheaper housing, and new experiences. I will ask my boss if he can contact that waffle house and see if they indeed have a management opening, as long as Tessa and Siljonic are ok with it.

*Will learn as much about Rhythm to see what I am getting into*

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

You have enough to build the frame, but not the brains of it. Okay, you start studying Nuclear Physics.

The computer issues you were dealing with suddenly straighten out, and the computer becomes downright easy to work with.  After a while, it seems like it anticipates many of your questions.

You notice Siljonic is studying Steam Technology with an expression of wonder on his face, and the way the computer presents the information to him is far more verbal than it is with you. He seems to be soaking it in rapidly.

Tessa too has her own style, but she is focusing on studying the operation of jumpgates, and about a half-dozen other things (basically whatever catches her attention at the time).

There are lots of theories how they work, and about a half-dozen seemingly authoritative answers...that disagree with each other.

They both are fine with it. Housing is more expensive, but the pay is better for them (and a lot better for you) so its a good economic move.  You leave in a shuttle that takes over ten hours to fly from the outskirts of the Harmony system, to the neutron star Rhythm.

Things are quieter and simpler here with more of a hard-edge. You've found the equivalent of the Australian Outback.  But its still hugely lavish, and with massive technologies.

You're in charge in management, and you find that the biggest problemis getting workers. People value their life, and their status and working at WH is low status and teaches you little. So instead, you have to pay huge sums for the salary. Still, the company made sure you had a good team to start with.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

I think I will like learning Nuclear Physics, so I will look forward to studying it, and I'm glad I'm able to work with the new computer.

I will help Siljonic when I can with questions, and introduce him to electricity, and basics of the early 20th centry, if he is able.

I will let Tessa study so we can compare notes later, it's good we are going off in different directions, she will be able to teach me and vice versa.

I haven't been management before, but I know how I felt. I will show the new workers that I have no problem pitching in waiting tables, washing dishes, whatever needs to be done. I will also let them know that I won't let the customers boss them around, we are here to serve them, not be subserviant to them. I will schedule people as they like, using myself, Tessa, and Siljonic to fill in holes. I will see if I can get them to be assistant managers, to help out with the day to day management of the waffle house. I will also get to know the workers, ask them about their lives, and make an effort to connect with them. The job may stink, but if everyone is working together, it makes the experience better.

We will continue with the training, as I'm sure we will have some people that will itch for a fight here.

For a special treat this week, will fix Tessa breakfast in bed.

The month passes smoothly with only two fights in the diner, and the crew generally liking you. You do lose half of the crew to other jobs, but you find thats considered quite acceptable. You hire more, and many of them don't bother to show up, and so you hire even more.

The local computer is fully adjusted to you by now, and the studies whizz by. It takes a break right before you get tired and irritable, and suggests snack times to boost your energy. +@2

With Siljonic, he continues to teach you swordsmanship +@2 with brutal efficiency, and to improve your balance and stamina.

You've developed 1@7 Management Skills also.

Tessa thinks you're the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Things are going swimmingly.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

I'll just keep up the recruiting, and making the diner a friendly place to work.

Will continue with the nuclear physics learning, I figure once I make the weapons we will be versed out, so might as well be an expert in making them. Might as well be the verser equivalent of the Lord of War.

I will continue learning with Siljonic, I think my breaking blade will the sword, I will base a martial arts style around, like the samurai of old, pulling the weapon out of the scabbard to strike, and return it to the scabbard before the next one. I will call it Jhiaxus's Bushido, will be a Fast Attack style, 3 strikes per minute amateur, +30 to hit. Weapon Dependant. Siljonic should be able to teach me the style, even though he does not have that one himself. I will also look up in the computer, any known hand to hand martial arts styles here, and see if the computer can give me a design for a Mind Interface Device, to accelerate learning for various skills.

I will continue training my psionic skills from earlier, as I would like to get good with what I know, while I have the time.

I will go shopping with Tessa, since she has been good over the last month, and see if I can get a decent ring made when she's not around, to work toward giving it to her for an engagement. Is she learning how to fight as well? How is she spending her off work time. I will take an active interest in it.

I will talk to Siljonic, see if he found a girl he is interested in. I figure we have enough flow in and out of the waffle shop, and he is very charismatic, he probably has more than a few admirers, but he's too shy to do anything about it.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

Several people ask you if you're interested in managing a larger concern on a speculative basis. You provide credits, and your 'enthusiastic if amateur management skills' and they provide a place and contractors to build a space
resort. Everyone gets paid a percentage of profits.

This flows from your work at the WH.

A breaking blade is a mono blade that disintegrates as it cuts.  Thus by the point of three good strikes its practically useless until it is sheathed again,a nd the crystallizing liquid in the sheathe reforms the blade (this is fairly rapid.) Are you sure you want this MA style?

Also, the locals do teach MA, but they teach Individualized Combat Skill in general, although a few other schools teach.  ICS is a martial art that is the evolution of Jeet Kune Do.  Each practictioner fights differently with a customized fighting style chosen just for them.

Tessa is learning fighting, but with a drop foil. Its a fencing style.  She's also practising acrobatics.

You find a splendid ring and buy it.

"You know, we could be anyone we wanted to. We have enough money now to go to the Nanotech Guild and get a downpayment on being transformed into a whale if we want.  Or you could be that seven fooot tall guy with horns out of his shoulders..." Tessa mentions.

"I do not know, boss. I think I am the only non-human in this universe.  Its strange, but interesting. I do have a few casual friends I meet, but its clearly nothing more than a fling." Siljonic seems a bit stiffly uncomfortable by this conversation.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

I think I will take them up on their offer about the space resort, I have a pile of credits, and not enough to spend them on. I will recommend Tessa to be manager, for two reasons, she's personable and cute. With Siljonic and Tessa working, it means I can take a chance on a project like this, and improve my charisma and persuasion as I work.

I realize what the blade is, MJ has one, I still want to go forward, I will buy another blade, so I have two on the same hip like a Samurai.

I will check out the ICS instructor, at the very least, it will get me in shape faster, I'm already doing enough studying.

Nanotech, interesting, I don't want to lose my humanity, but with that said, having nanotech to repair damage, increase my abilities, subdermal armor all sound good. I will go down to the clinic and see what options there have. I'd be lying if I didn't want to be a superhero.

*smiles* It's alright Siljonic, just wanted to make sure you were ok, I know you value your privacy, but sometimes friends need to ask the questions that make you uncomfortable.

Time to take Tessa out to a nice place to eat, black tie, and at the end of the night when the champagne comes out, have the ring in her glass, and ask for her hand in marriage.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

A Type 2A legal contract is produced. It is elegant and polished with every detail thought of, and presented with clarity.

"Its the standard contract taught to elementary school kids along with the other forty basics." Your new partner, a Tree, and his companion a Blanket, inform you. "That way we don't have to hire lawyers and with literally tens of millions of cases based on this contract tried before judgebots, its very, very predictable, which means safe, which means I can sleep in the winter peacefully." The Tree says from its speaker device.

===========

You buy two blades and hang them from a belt Samurai fashion.

The ICS instructor bows as you enter.

"Good customer, we will have a most peculiar relationship. I shall be respectful to you in this room.  However, in the dojo, if I see fit, I may treat you with deep unkindness. For this I apologize.  Also, I apologize but I will need to ask you many, many questions, some of a personal nature.  For ICS is an individualized combat style perfectly suited to you and you alone.  Thus I must know you, perhaps better than you know yourself.  If you agree to this, then sign here."

He holds out a waiver form which is again a masterpiece of crystal clarity. Its Contract 7D.

=======

Looking for Mind Interface tech brings you to pages describing the Mad Gods who live outside the solar system. These crazed superintelligences plot against normal humans with wiles too deep and subtle for any response to them but utter avoidance. Any attempt to use a MI will provoke at a minimum Contagion Level Nine responses by the appropriate authorities. For comparison, airborne hemmorraghic Ebola Upgrade only provokes Level Five response.

========

A bit discouraged, you make your way to the offices of the Nanotech Guild.  Inside the gray walls, and the stern halls with unsmiling receptionists, and an air of claustrophobic security you venture.  A receptionist escorts you to a private room after the waiting room, and a young fellow is inside sitting behind a desk.

"We don't do the types of options you're asking for, sir.  I'm not sure what solar system you're from, other than its very far away on the other side of Human Space, but in Starsong the Guild controls nanotech very strictly.  However, some of what you request can be done by any competent body shoppe."

========

She says yes as the restauraunt then bursts into applause.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

Ok I read the 2A contract, how much am I expected to contribute financially, and how much of the % of profits, assuming we make one will I be getting out of 100%? I will also look for the hooks, or small print often put into contracts, just so I know what I am getting myself into.

I will begin learning my style, as for special maneuvers:

Fast Draw into a Strike, and resheave the blade after
Weapon Breaker, where I am for the weapon
Fast Draw a blade to parry
Fast Draw a blade to strike, as the other is engaged
A kick mean to lift a guy off his feet and into the ground

*I bow to the instructor* I understand, ask any you want, and I will answer truthfully, after reading the 7D contract like above, if all seems well, I will sign it.

I will keep the Airborne Hemmorragic Ebola Upgrade, as something to look for in a weapon after completing the Mini Nuke Guns. I will not press forward with the mind interface technology. How am I going with the Nuclear Physics?

*nods* Ok which of my requests can be done and can you recommend a shop?

I will begin research on nanotech, since the host said it is  strictly regulated, it doesn't mean it's not possible. I want to learn all there is about nanotech, and get my computer and whatever skills to the point of making them myself. I will see the body shop for the things they can do for me, and see how the process works, and see if there is anything I can use to increase the speed of learning.

I will still do weapon training with Siljonic, when time allows.

I will do little things for Tessa through the coming weeks, got a lot of things to do and learn, as I'm sure she does, but having fun doing them.

You'll be contributing most of what you three have, and in return for that and the work you three do, you get 35%. There is no 'small print' as it were. The whole thing is plain but elegant.

After three hours, you've punched the wall twice, and you're sweating and a bit sick.  However, you find you understand yourself better, and not all of it is pleasant knowledge about your self. Secret motives and connections in your deep mind have come to light.  The instructor sends you home with instructions to take the night off, and relax. You've been through the wringer.

+@1 Intuition.
+@2 Nuclear Physics

A body shoppe offers a great deal of small changes: sub-dermal armor for one. Wiring your ribs to make them unbreakable. They are shocked that you don't have a RIF wraparound skull plate to protect your brain, and an O2 pump in your brainstem with Synergine blood clotting supply....

"Why if someone cut off your head, you'd die instantly!"

All of this you can easily afford.

+@1 Swordfighting.

You occasionally find that 'couples telepathy' working in a flash here and there as you 'just know' what she's thinking.

Tessa and Siljonic agree."Big changes? Well, if you want really major changes you can go the N-techs, but thats mostly if you want to be a Blanket or a Tree or a Cetacean, and you'll pardon me, but I don't think thats for you. We can do a genemod therapy, turn you into any one of dozens of sub-species of Humanity. Its too bad we never met aliens, but we have them all in our own genes."  The designer at the body shoppe shows you the different body types.
The Nuclear Physics program stays away from anything that might be weapons related. Now, that is a problem because much can be deduced by a bright student, but they don't help you in making weapons.

Nanotech is primarily used in Starseeds which stellarform whole solar systems at one shot. Secondarily its used for massive body mods.  Tertiarily its occasionally used in very difficult building projects in far from planets. Its controlled by the Nanotech Guild which is its own governance, and has extremely strict entrance requirements (the typical N-tech operative is hypernormal ethically, could outbox Mike Tyson and a Seal team op at the same time, and is a high level genius with significant empathy....in other words one in ten million sort of people.) Attempted use of N-tech without their approval will bring their unfriendly attention, and that of the House of Peace.

You're holding a social event at your new resort which is not starting up as fast as it should, and a very tall lady (nine feet) with a veiled face asks to speak to you. Her voice is layered by experience, and insight, and a gentle humor that cannot be faked.

"You're one of them, aren't you? Do you know an M.J. Young, proprietor of Young's Cola before he vanished in an altercation with a Mad God?"

We met him, and our first thought was that he was a creation of the crazed superintelligences, the Mad Gods, for some plan too devious for us to understand. But he argued ably, and pointed out the error in our logic. Since his leaving, we've spent a fair bit of money researching the nature of the Multiverse. We hadn't realized it existed before he came to our attention."

She pats you on the hand.

"Dear boy, we have some ideas that we ban. The use of n-tech, and starcracking weapons, and superintelligence protocols. The House of Peace, a collection of rabid fanatics, helps enforce this.  But we stand so very, very close to the Abyss. We totter on its edge, second by second. There are a trillion human beings in the Starsong Trinary System, and at least a hundred million of them could easily destroy the whole system by their own selves if left to work on their own projects. Any second, you could look into the sky and see the tachyon wave of unbearable brightness hit the sky, the precursor to the slower moving lightspeed carried explosion of Harmony in some stellarcracking attack. You'd have perhaps twenty minutes before you and everything in the area was reduced to plasma."

She smiles.

"Now you would find another world, but this is the only one we've got. So, if you know a better way to run a super-tech society with freedom and prosperity please enlighten us. Our plan, so far, is to keep rolling the dice and hope that we don't roll snakeeyes. Not a very brilliant plan, I might add."

"I am Cynthia Randalls, born in 1961 in Tejas City, New Mexico. A pleasure to meet you."

She gestures with her hands.

"War is a constant of human society. Like violent fanatics. There have been attempts to wipe out violence, and they all failed, but one. So instead, we allow the violence free play inside certain rigid codes of behavior to limit the damage, and prevent runaway damage cascades. So your Utopian society is impossible."

She shrugs.

"I can take your offer to the other L1's who make up my social circle and see if they are willing to commit the resources to protect you. Of course, we could hide you far easier, but you'd be close to a prisoner in some hidden asteroid far from the normal flow of life."

She pauses, and you can feel her thinking or praying.

"Something burdens my heart. There are those of us who have lived as long as I have. However, they chose poorly. They exalted self over the Good. Now, centuries later, they are wholly malevolent. Many were friends, but they chose their own desires, and now they are monsters of passion and endless need. If four centuries can turn a man into something like a living devil, then what will the endless millenia do to you, Jhiaxus?"

She laughs.

"Its a joy to talk to someone young who actually remembers these things. And not as some centuries gone primitive toy. You know, that was what M.J. did. He brought back the true flavor of Coke. We had so many stories and lies in our archives, and such upheavals that we had lost Coca-cola. Now if only we had asked him for the eleven herbs...."

She nods.

"We have some like you. They just want to be themselves, but even they are changing. Eventually the wait of your decisions will turn you into something. You can resist, try to remain as you are. Be stagnant. But in the end, I think you will find you will have aligned yourself with Good or with Evil. I don't think immortals have a choice in this. We can delay, but eventually the reckoning is counted."

She shakes her head in disagreement.

"Aye, we could build a world with superheroes, but we chose not too. It was judged too likely to lead to tyranny on the one hand with Ubermen, or to something like the Lament Disaster on the other hand." She snorts. "So in our way, we too are trying to delay the reckoning. I thank you. I hadn't looked at things in quite that way before. And when you get to be my age, a new idea is a valued thing."

You work the party, and schmooze the guests. A number of them are discreetly interested in the fact that you were talking to a L1 and a Living Saint as well.

Business does not pick up very fast after this, but it does take a turn for the better, and your other investors stop making worried noises although frowns do not leave their faces.

The other two gets mods as well, and Tessa uses the chance to clear up an allergy to peanuts and a very mild astigmatism in her left eye.

You continue to train in ICS, and in Nuclear Physics while running the resort. Your charm and savoir-faire is tested again and again like the time ten people got ticked off at each other, and started duels in the lobby.

Your efforts continue to pay off, and your investors now give you guarded smiles.

Cynthia, the L1, arrives in your office, and receptionist is so flustered that she stammers as she runs to get you.

The very tall lady is backed up by four men who are carrying an abundance of swords, and seem unable to stop moving. Their eyes continually rove about, and their steps are like oil rolling down glass. One of them hops over the counter, and slips back to your office before you can say anything.

"Kaizen genmods. Some of the finest bodyguards on the market. They are...expensive."  She walks up to you,  and hands you an Ace of Spades card on a string to hang about your neck.

"Unlimited Vengeance. The Dead Man's Insurance Corporation has promised to destroy anyone who kills you. However, they require you to follow their rules which includes not starting fights, or going into war zones...exercise common sense, or the insurance policy is void."

She hands you the contract.  You glance at it, and the cost for it, for a year, is several times the cost of your resort.

The beach is more of an artificial thing with a holographic horizon several hundred feet out, and the waves look just a tiny bit....off.  But Tessa loves it, and you get a chance to lose very badly to her in beach volleyball.

Cynthia gives you a name not listed in the public database you can access, and soon enough you're working with a guy who got the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2217 when he was twenty-four.  He doesn't do original research anymore.  Instead, he evaluates ideas, and teaches a few students, and plays the dulcimer.

Your bodyguards aren't that interested in helping you learn to be better. Its their job to see you stay in one piece. However, they do make comments on how you can move inside a protected space for maximum protection which lets you see things a bit differently in your martial arts.  They seem to see the universe in terms of spaces, and less in terms of objects.

+@1 ICS.

Also, your ICS instructor bows very deeply when they enter the dojo.

Re: Jhiaxus and the Jumpgate

Your teacher is a tall, thin man with four joints per finger which helps him play the dulcimer fantastically well.  He grins when you enter his sunroom.

"I'm Doctor Lawrence Watkins, Nobel Prize, and enough honorary degrees to choke a whale. But, call me Larry. I worked like a fiend the first century after my prize, trying to outdo myself, did a lot of useful stuff, but never got close. Always insisted on being "Doctor...", until I bored myself. Now, I'm Larry the best dulcimer player in Rhythm, and I enjoy life."

After his speech, he listens to your questions.

"One. You can't learn everything. I assume you're familar with the story of the Pencil? Two, I can either teach you specific things, the equivalent of teaching you how to nail in one type of nail in one type of wood?  Or I can teach you more general principles, and then some more specifics to make it practical and to ground it.  Three, I've been told you're from the Ought Century, a Millenial? That makes you older than me, but it also means you may be afflicted with some superstitions which I should try to dislodge out of your brain, understand? If I'm going to fast, please, tell me to shut up for a moment. My wife does it all the time."

Yeah, he rattles that off in twenty seconds....

=========

The Kaizen are pure bodyguards, and they have 3@7 skills in ICS, and you have 1@4 or so skills....

========

For Cynthia, the Insurance Card is petty cash, for you, the minor mods you're talking about are petty cash, or at best minor cash.  You go out and get your astigmatism fixed to 20/10 on a street corner by a passing Doc Box who takes a day's salary for the work, and one minute of your time.  The metabolism is a bit more complicated, and takes two whole days of salary and seven minutes to fix.  You feel much more energetic, sleep less, and soon are shopping for new clothes.

=========

There is such armor, but its considered rude to wear it in public.  However, you're able to buy it for the both of you, and Tessa smiles as she gets hers.

"Pretty and practical." She smiles. Things get better from there.

It's ok, fast talking is fine with me, if I don't understand I will say so. I'm ready to start when you are, I probably need the most help with the math, if your asking me my weakness."

"Jhiaxus. Yes, you'll find that you reinvent yourself as the centuries spin." He sounds as if he talks from personal experience, and as if he were speaking of proverbial truths in his culture. "And call me Larry."

He begins to ask you detailed questions about your understanding.

"I'll need to do some basic teaching. And these technologies are supported by deep and broad understandings of our technology. However, I'll try to trim it down as far as possible."

He pauses, and he looks a little concerned.

"I'm ah, well, the first thing we have to deal with is the Materialist Superstition of your time." He turns red in the face from embarrassment. "I'm not saying you're superstitious, or ignorant..." He looks more flustered. "Oh dear. I'm not doing well. Let me begin again."

He breathes in and out.

"The universe is a hierarchy with the upper levels constraining the lower levels. Ah..." He snaps his fingers as if enlightened. "The computer is not known from the elements of matter listed in its construction, nor even from the layout of its parts, or even from the operating system. It is known from the mind of the user which constrains each of the levels below it, and each level constrains the level below it down to crude, base matter. Mind rules the universe. This is a fundamental principle of our science. And let me tell you, I think it would be literally impossible for  you to understand nanotech without it. You'd be like some savage Darwinist trying to understand human biology, or an alchemist trying to turn lead into gold."

And with that he begins to lay out the principles of nanotech at very high speed.  He draws one thing on a hologram screen, calls up another thing with the other hand, and speaks another thing. They all relate, but saying its insanely difficult to keep up is understating things.

And this establishes his program. He 'blows your mind' with an initial lecture point, and then he demonstrates its use in a dozen applications related to the fields you're wanting to study. And you're left with ringing ears, and a sense of his deep passion for learning, and an awareness of the vastness of learning in front of you.

A month later, and +@2 Basic Science, 1@4 Principles of Nanotech, +@1 Intuition.
