Post Ludum: New Ice Age (Avahur)

NIA is a simple introduction world that serves the same purpose as the volcano island: to introduce the new player (or verser) to the game.  This one is much simpler and straightforward (and shorter, it seems) than the volcano island.

Avahur ended up dying in record time after Vars went and committed a suicidal act, but the world served its purpose.

So... any comments or whatnot...

And I'm still waiting on PT about getting your next world set up, Avahur.

Re: Post Ludum: New Ice Age (Avahur)

I'll get it to you, hopefully tonight.

And wow...you zapped him quick.  I was laughing away.

But nice strategy, Avahur, on trying to survive a near fatal accident.  I like the spunk.

That was a quick intro world.  Maybe at your next stop, you'll be able to pick up a little something to make life easier on your journey.  (Gems and weapons are nice.)

Re: Post Ludum: New Ice Age (Avahur)

Well, Avahur got a bunch of bad rolls on Vars not doing something suicidal, so... yeah.

I was planning on having him wander around a bit more in the beginning, too, but the dice ultimately control the game.

Re: Post Ludum: New Ice Age (Avahur)

The dice are out to get me...but seroiusly if I were in a position like that where I was going off a cliff, that is exactly what I would do, and I would probably survive.....but the dice are out get me, and therefore I died...well since it says that I am immortal and just go from world to world, i cant really die, i just respawn when it is my time, like if you go into a store and they have a game demo, when your time is up it goes black, then you start over...meh I died in record time!? heh...

Re: Post Ludum: New Ice Age (Avahur)

I do like new worlds too.  Plus, worst case scenario, all that reading that Mal did can be re-used since its a double scenario.  And, Mal, if you thought that was hard to read, I can send you Starsong Trinary Systems...35,000 words describing the year 2436 or about.

But coffee will stunt your growth Malachai...

Now, hot chocolate with marshmallows on the first day of real snow is good for you...yes we did snowball fights, and walks in the snow, and we made two snowmen here at stately Playtester Manor. The melted remnants of the snowmen will probably be all that is left on Monday.

Re: Post Ludum: New Ice Age (Avahur)

I live in Tennessee, so we have snow perhaps every other year.  Tonight was a shocker, three or so inches of snow after last nights two inches (which had mostly melted).

It might even be until Wednesday before its almost all gone.

That would be awesome, I wish that happened down here.

I Hate botching, and like I said earlier, the dice hate me and are out to get me.

Re: Post Ludum: New Ice Age (Avahur)

I'm getting the shivers just reading all this talk about snow. I live in the southern part of Texas and I think its snowed three times here since I was born. If I want to see snow, I'll get on a plane, but I really wouldnt want the stuff in my yard if I could help it.

Got about a foot last night.  Great mood setter.

And that was a very quick run through the frozen world.

Kate, you know it was a short run for Avahur when the Post Ludum is about as long as the run itself.

Re: Post Ludum: New Ice Age (Avahur)

I still wonder about the rationale for (re)using short no-win scenario worlds as intro worlds (except perhaps as demos for conventions, where you have limited time together).

To me, the commonly used intro settings (Ice World, Volcano World) seem to lack some of the depth, creativity, texture, general interest, and fun of some other worlds.

Why have the first stop be relatively short, in a world of relatively less depth and fewer possibilities (other than an ultimately futile struggle to survive)?

I could be reading too much into the previous comments in this thread, but doesn't it seem like this world was "let's get this out of the way, and go on to something more interesting"?

Is it just me?  How do the folks who started in Ice World or Volcano World feel?  Do you think that those served as a good intro to the game for you?  Or do you wish you had started at the Tower of Rhodes, or on Misty's ship, or in Haston?
