Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

This world is based on a novel idea of mine, Empire of the Phoenix (why yes, Misty, I do like Phoenixes), and Tomas got a bit into this world, but there was a lot of depth further to go.

Its an extended metaphor for a sort of modern world.  This is one thing I like about magic, if you want, you can tailor it precisely to what sort of metaphor you want.

Tomas also got to learn three magic spells here.  One...mana collecting which makes casting other spells easier, and some spells absolutely require it.  Two a ball of fire, and three ice.  He also picked up theoretical knowledge on spellcasting so he might be able to teach himself.  Plus, yes, he has his sword, and stuff.

Yup, I got so much more than what I expected to learn in this world; especially the ability of self-teaching the magic business. And I finally have a real weapon ^_^

Re: Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

How much does magic learned in one world help in other magic worlds?

Tomas learned some things in the Tower, didn't he?  Were they of any use here, or were they delusions that had to be unlearned to make progress here?

Just like Oak, who has managed to figure out that singing new songs produces magical effects in Haston... but how much will that help him in other magic biased worlds?

Is magic bias relatively unique in that different flavors of magic don't necessarily mix?  For example, I have the impression that given two psi worlds with the same psi bias, stuff learned in one world will be useful in the other.  Same for tech and body.  Is this correct?  But my impression is that magic is different?

Is this impression correct?  Or did I muddle any and/or all of it?  :)

Re: Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

There's some complications about learning, and teaching magic that I'm not fully up on, but for magic you already know, the rule is simple.

You can do it.

Learn Holy Song Magic in Haston, an Arcane Mana spell in Timwrath, Chi channelling in an Anime Martial Arts world, and then use them all in a D&D type world.  And that sentence works in any order you choose to rearrange it.

There are bias levels...

That is in certain worlds some types of spells don't work.  You might have a world where the highest type of magic is Energy Manipulation. Ok, you can cast fireballs, and lightning bolts, call fire from Heaven, and so forth, but you might not be able to cast Wish spells, raise the dead, and open gates to other worlds.  Those last three are higher levels of magic.

And then there's more complications with power blocks.  In Haston, Arcane magic is impossible.  Only Holy magic works there.

You could have a world with gates and wish spells, and all sorts of magic but energy manipulations are power blocked.  That is, no one in that world can ever cast a fireball.

Re: Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

Now people in world two will often tell you that the magic you learned in world one is useless, but they are generally wrong.

Re: Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

PT I still want to learn magic, sure I can slightly heal myself very very littlely but I want to actually learn something more than that, so next world or in this world could you allow me to do so?

Re: Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

He did last weekend also... but not in the current threads.

After all, he is a "Playtester".  And PTs are bound to find "Post Ludum" comments irresistible, right???  :D

You just need the right bait to coax him out of his weekend retreats... ;)

Re: Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

Avahur,

I'm going to let someone who I've been hoping will gm over her for some time, to gm your next world.  Not sure what world he will send you to, but Kyler knows the game system way better than I do...even if he admits some people find him a little crazy in the gm-ing.

So, no clue where you're going next.  I will say, if you found Lilith's World to be kinda bizzarre, that this is the guy who invented that one.

Re: Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

And Heartwar is not a good world to learn magic in.  When the people here in the Dreamworld talk of using magic, they mean the psionic ability to manipulate the dreamworld.

Magic. Poetry, and other such things are potent symbols with which to gather more strength to manipulate the dreamworld.  Its not really magic, but the image of the magician is a very potent symbol in the Collective Unconscious of Humanity.

So when one of the players used a 'spell' he learned in the dreamworld in the waking world, it only had the effect of calming him.  Roughly the equivalent of a prayer for peace of mind, or a mantra.  Which is magic, but very low level magic.

Sometime, I'd like to make a pair of worlds.  Each is alike, but for one difference.  In one they use psi powers with some ritual to focus the mind, and in the other, they use magic with some ritual to focus the belief.

You'd see someone in a robe toss fire at you, and it could easily be the psionic world...

Need some more for this than just that, though.  Thats just a little seed of a world.  Need at least a sapling.

Re: Post Ludum: Tomas in Timwrath

Good night, ya' buncha smart alecks (and I'd say for Misty, smart alexis's but that would be just too confusing.)

:)

But if you need to post on something, feel free to design a world here while I sleep.  You could be like the brownies in the fairie tales.  The cobbler wakes up to find a pair of fixed shoes....
