Vancian Magic
I'm talking to Person A about Jack Vance's magic system (which underlays in a crude, degraded form D and D) and Person B about high level characters, and well Vance's magic does seem to lean toward HLC's.
Note: I've only read one of Vance's novels, perhaps his last so I have 1@1 in Vance Knowledge.
But I told Person A I'd like to try to write up a Multiverser world based on Vancian magic.
Points:
1. Magic is based upon mathematics, but in the collapsed Empire, we have barbarian looters who don't understand, not really, what they have. Its like a child of Mad Max's world being faced with an Ipod with a solar cell, and finding out he can play Angry Birds on it if he holds it in the sunlight. Why? He doesn't know. Can he program,or make it do other functions? No.
2. Spells are few in number, and have ancient histories of being modified over the millenia by this wizardd and that wizard.
3. Magic devices are bizarre and largely unique. No one makes new ones.
4. Magic botches are common, and reversal of effects on a varying scale is one of the more common botches.
5. History lingers on. "In the Woods of Arasgorf, where the Wizard Alaci first used Alaci's Fiery Dispersal, the defeated Horde of Mongorik took to eating the vatz berries for starvation beset them, but this berry was such that it twisted mind and body, and even now the two, and three headed, the five legged, the uselessly winged, and the faceless who hunt by smell throng the Woods, and beset any travellers for the vatz berry if consumed on the Night of the Five Hundred Year also grants immortality, but of a kind not to be wished for as it also gives madness and pain.".....Eric.
6. Wizards, that is those with a sufficient skill roll, to remember the mind-twisting and long images and words of magic, speak their magic, and this erases the memory so they can only learn a few spells of varying sizes per day, and must rely on spellbooks.
7. Because of the difficulty of creating new spells, and the hundred spells that exist, the best way to get new spells is to trade, but that is hardly chosen. Instead, assasination of rival wizards, and theft of their goods are the most common ways to add more spells.
