quote:
I give her a hug. Clearly she's traumatized past my level of expertise, but I don't see any pschy wards around here, so you do what you can.
When you hug her, she wraps her arms around your neck so hard you have a modicum of trouble breathing. It's not intolerable though. You're tough. You can take it.
Alice meanwhile, her breathing gradually slows down. It goes from short, shallow sobbing breaths to slower, deeper breaths. She's clearly calming down from the hug.
When she lets go of you, she's got the slightest hint of a smile and whispers "Thank you."
quote:
Humming gently to her, I touch her forehead as i hold her. I need to see if she is wet and clammy....which would be a sign of shock.
No sign of actual shock. She's just scared out of her mind.
quote:
"Stay here.' I murmur after a second, and set her down on a drum sized rock that used to be part of the Tower and got tossed all the way here. As i move away, she starts and I assure her, I'm staying in sight.
She sits. She tells you that no one was really certain what started the war. Best guess is two toughest kids on the block. Sooner or later they're gonna fight. There has never been a war here. But now, about 90% of the population is gone. Maybe more. Magehammer and Slidehammer are both gone. What's left of the population is trying to rebuild. There are some skirmishes here and there from some folks that don't know when to give up, so you still need to be careful.
quote:
I gather up twigs and branches, and pray...."Give me fire Lord, please. I know not of a Bible example, but surely you can spare some for this lost little daughter of yours."
A flash goes through your mind. Elijah the prophet (Or was it Elisha?) Whichever one called down a fireball from Heaven to disprove the priests of Baal. A fireball comes down out of the sky to light your fire.
Alice is impressed, but she's seen versers do things like that before. She sits beside the fire to warm up a bit. There is a bit of an unnatural, unexplained chill in the air.
quote:
If I have any sort of chocolate or sugar in my backpack from the other world I'll take it out. Chocolate is good for shock.
You've got a can of chocolate syrup. Regular chocolate would have spoiled. But canned syrup is still good.
quote:
I keep working, soft and quiet, but firm and definite at the same time.
Alice just watches you. After a time she asks "What are we going to do now, good sir?"
In reality, she might be five times your age, but still just a scared teenager.
You had one. Did you bring it here? Only you would know that.
