You are in a plastic ball floating on the surface of the ocean when Hermes decides to start playing with you. He pushes you faster and faster across the oceans surface. At one point you see the cast of Gilligan's island on the SS Minnow for their Three hour tour. You hit a storm and then crash into a beach that breaks your ball.

You are slowly coming too. you feel something gritty under you and hear the sound of waves.

I slowly sit up and reflexively rub my forehead with one hand and feel my shoulder that was injured with the other (the shot from the duel).

As my head clears I peer around, looking to identify my surroundings. I windcraft a far seeing to help survey my surroundings, feeling oddly better knowing hermes is around, but not summoning him yet in case someone is watching.

Much to your surprised the wound and pain is all gone. Like you where never shot in the first place.

Your Farseeing works well. Much easier than in the Wild West.
You are on a Black Sand Beach with your items near you. Out in the ocean it it blue-green as far as you can see. You see fairly decent sized fish in the water. As you turn left from viewing the ocean you view the black beach. in the distance you spot a small stream flowing into the ocean. Turning left again you look into the interior of the island. The trees look tropical and you see a single mountain top that is a few miles away. steam is coming out of it. Turning left again you look down the other way on the black beach. There is nothing of note that way.

You feel the pull towards someone inland.

I take a few deep, calming breaths as I notice the familiar tugging sensation, and stand up, gathering my items and packing them into my backpack, thinking about my course of action. Is this Bob? Will he be trying to kill me for abandoning him in Alera, or just because he's kinda crazy? Either way, I can't run for him, and I'd rather meet him on my terms.

I strap the saber from the Wild West to my side, put the gun away in the backpack, not wanting to have to use it, but situate my short bow and arrows to be easily withdrawn from the pack if need be.

Once situated I start moving in the direction of the tugging sensation, keeping an eye out for tripwires, glints of steel, prepared fall traps, wild animals, etc. I'm mentally preparing myself to call on a combination of metalcrafting, using the furies in my blade, and windcrafting in case I need to respond with a quick defense

As you walk you don't find any tripwires or wild animals.
You come to a clearing with several felled trees with a man standing in front of another tree on the opposite side of the clearing. Even from your vantace point behind him you can tell that he is not Bob. he is slightly taller and built like a tank. He has short brown hair. He is wearing a tattered shirt and shorts. He has a Zweihander in a sheath on his back and a dagger in a sheath on his belt. He shifts into a fighting stance facing the tree and then punches the tree accompanied with a loud Kiai. The part of the tree he punched simply ceases to exist in a hole wide enough to fell the tree. It falls to the side with no harm to him. He flinches from something you can't see and then turns around and faces you. He relaxes his stance and calls out to you

"You haven't seen much in the way of magic, Have you?"

He starts walking towards you to the center of the clearing and sits down on a log.

"Come and sit down. My name is Magnus. How have your worlds been treating you?"

Glantri's Island

I sit down at his motion to and start explaining. "I've seen a fair amount of furycraft, I can fly, sense metal and reinforce it, and manipulate plants to a small degree. And I can summon Hermes, my air fury. Haven't managed to gain any others, though the last world was terrible for crafting. I do miss Alera, I worry I failed to get enough warning to Attis. He had me working to protect the realm, but I died to an explosive heat stone sadly. My name is Mike Washer. I take it by your behavior that you're not homicidal like Bob? He's the only other person I met with this pulling feeling. And I'm sorry I'm rambling, my worlds have been confusing, and the last world was run by firearms and I was confused with a gang leader in a Wild West situation. He even looked like me and had my name apparently. Before that, I was in Alera training in the academy for furycrafting and gathering information for one of the sons of the high lords, and a friend of mine, Attis. I fear I let him down but hopefully the events of my death will lead him to know what's going on. And before that I lead a band of missing links to form together before we got abducted by aliens with advanced technology that were harvesting the forest.  And that's my story so far, mostly I've been confused and just trying to get by and learn what I can. Flying is definitely my favorite so far."

And at the end of that I realize how long of a ramble that was without pause, and take a deep breath and relax my posture some, feeling more comfortable now that he doesn't appear insane.

I haven't heard of this Furycrafting before. Judging by the existence of Hermes, it probably involves manipulating elemental spirits. Interesting.

Anyway you are new to this whole versing business, Correct Mike?
Let's get you up to speed.
Our kind are called versers or worldwalkers. We do not age anymore and when we are killed we get forced into our next world. I'm not sure of the exact mechanics of how that works but I do know that it involves us being infected with something called scriff. Anyway Magic and Psionics exist and most versers can learn how to use them. As you have already figured out.

Any questions so far?

It sounds like you had a few interesting worlds. I wouldn't have minded exploring that Alera you mentioned."

"That's a relief. With Bob being my only point of reference I was afraid. It is truly a pleasure to meet you Magnus. Furycrafting is exactly that, it's taking the furies which naturally inhabit the world, earth fire water wind metal and air, and convincing them to do what you wish. The truly powerful furies have shapes of their own, and once bonded help in their area of crafting.

Yeah, I'm new to this,... Versing... Business.  This scriff, is that why I can sense your presence and where my stuff is?

What's the difference between psionics and magic? And why were you clearing these trees? And was that magic?

If you do end up in Alera, do me a favor and look up Attis of Aquitaine. He's the prince of the high lord there. Just let him know that the man he had me look into killed me, before I could get the message back to him. He's up to some really bad stuff, plotting an assassination I believe. "

"Interesting. I would like to see furycrafting in action.

Yes, That is what more experienced versers have told me before. something about it being attracted to itself.

It was magic. But it's rather advanced. I was clearing the trees because I'm planning on building a raft.

As for the differences between Magic and psionics... I could be here for an hour explaining the metaphysical differences. But in general Magic taps into an external power source and Psionics tap into the power of your soul or mind. But I've seen Magic that taps into your lifeforce and Psionics that draw on the power of billions of souls.
In general, Magic tells the laws of physics to sitdown and shutup and Psionics works with the laws of physics

There is no guarantee that I'll show up in the right time period. But I'll keep it in mind."

"Let me demonstrate for you then"  and with that I call Hermes to help me with flying up to the top of the tree line, doing a small pause to look about and then settling back to the ground.
I'll also demonstrate woodcrafting by touching one of the felled trees and encouraging the log to grow outwards, becoming a little wider with a flatter top.

"Sounds like my furycrafting is psionic.

Why the raft? What's going on in this world?

It's appreciated all the same. I wouldn't feel right if i had the chance to get the message passed along and I didn't at least try."

The mountain blocks the view from that direction but you get a gorgeous panoramic view of the ocean.

Magnus's eyes widen a bit when you call Hermes and fly and he grins when you alter the shape of the wood.

He replies
"Indeed. You are using psionics to control the multitudes of minor elemental spirits. Cleaver. Very cleaver indeed.

Honestly this is my third time in a tropical island world. The first time I got killed by an Adamantortose helping a divergent of one of my old friends from my homeworld. The second time I talked to another new verser and relaxed on the island for a few days. Then It Exploded. That wasn't a fun way to die. Anyway You see that steam coming from the top of that mountain? That combined with the fact that the sand on the beach is black means this is probably an active volcano. I'm no geology expert, so I can't tell when it will erupt. But I'd rather not repeat the experience of burning to death from lava. So I'm going to build a raft and see if I can get somewhere interesting. Or at least die trying to punch out a shark or kraken or something.

It's ok, I'd don't mind passing a message. Assuming I remember it by the time I get there."

"I can assist in a few ways with the raft building, as burning to death in lava is an experience I would be willing to skip. I can think of a number of ways to help, but I'm limited in the shear quantity I can do before I get a crafting induced headache which can prevent me from doing more reliably. It seems to be different from world to world. But what I'm thinking is I can talk to the fire furies in the volcano and convince them to stay dormant longer or at least get a sense of how riled they are. I think it's best not to do that one though as if I mess up it could bring about the primary fire fury there, who may be annoyed...would be annoyed. I can shape the logs and probably even get them to grow into on another so we don't have to lash them and have a solid platform. I can also use earthcraft to be able to help lift the entire thing and bring it to the water. And if I can manage waterccrafting... Water furies don't always respond to me... I can get the currents to carry us and possibly see about sensing where the nearest land is.but we should start with crafting the actual raft unless you have any objections. And do you think we need a sail?"

And unless Magnus objects I'll get to work getting the wood furies in the individual logs to grow together jnto one raft and then work on flattening the middle and ridging the outside.

Anyway, Both of my magic styles are out of commission at the moment. So I'll have to use my comparatively weaker psionics to work on it.
Your Woodcrafting and Earthcrafting will be extremely useful for this. The first thing we need to do is move the logs closer to the sea so don't strain ourselves to much when we lift it later... Unless you think it would be easier to break them into easier to carry chunks?"

He concentrates and one log starts to float three feet off the ground and then he pushes it in the direction he intends to go.

And with that I pull deep from the earth furies of the island to increase my strength, and using my furyborn strength toss a log over my shoulder and start jogging towards the beach, repeating the trip until our materials are all there.

OOC: Sorry it took so long. Sometimes it takes a few days for me to come up with something.

These are fairly big logs(Magnus was intending to break them into more manageable pieces later), but you increase your strength enough to drag one to the beach. you manage to get five downed trees to the beach before your headache forces you to stop.

Magnus is keeping up with you using his psionic. But strange and unnerving things happen more and more frequently as he strains his psionics. After his fifth log he says to you.

"We better rest for a bit before we mess up big time with psionics. It looks like this is going to be a bit of a long term project."

OOC) I completely understand, thanks for running the game :) If it would help, any time your at a road block I'm happy to talk out what directions I could see it going, if that would help.

So just to clarify, we both brought 5 downed trees to the clearing, for a total of 10? Roughly how many trees total had Magnus cut down?

"Yeah, I know better than to push my furycrafting too hard. The headaches become nearly debilitating if I keep up too long, but they fade quickly enough as long as I leave off the crafting for a while. While we rest we can draft up a conceptual design for the raft, and try and anticipate what we'll need." At which point I'll rummage through my pack and pull out my gridded engineering paper and a pair of pencils, taking a seat on one of the logs. "I'm thinking we'll want to make sure to have a decent lip around the edges from the beginning, to keep from water flooding in too easily, one of the nice things about crafting the raft is I can continue to change it after we're adrift. If we gather up some soil and fruit plants we could have a source of food as well, as woodcrafting can accelerate plant growth. I can't promise the fruit will be the tastiest, but I'd rather not go hungry." And as I'm talking I'm sketching the concept I have in my head, defining outline, dimensions in terms of number of logs, and where furycrafted seams between the logs will be, and where the mini garden should be (I'm thinking only a couple plants, just enough to have something to be able to augment with woodcrafting) "Once I'm ready to craft again I should probably keep my efforts on the woodcrafting, starting to get the raft ready while you bring more logs. That way if the volcano blows early we at least have something to set off in"

That is correct. There are ten total at the beach now. He just started, so he got twenty down before you got there. Although he wasn't planning on bringing more down until he needed them.

Have you done drafting before? or designed boats? Ether way you succeed easily.

He listens to your explanation and watches you draw out plans for a bit.

"The reason I was making a raft before was because I don't have the skills or tools to make something more complex. Mind I could probably force it with my magic but I would explode from the backlash. But you and your woodcrafting are different. You could make an actual boat that would survive better on the open sea. You're right though, It would be a good idea to have something we can set off in quick in case the volcano goes off. there are plenty of trees on the island. so we can work on a better boat once we get that one done. What do you think?"

I work as a structural engineer, and have experience both drafting and guiding those under me in drafting as well as structural design understandings. The boat aspect is going to be new, but learning is always fun.

"Staying un-exploded sounds like a good first step in any survival handbook" I say smiling warmly,  I'm feeling much better to have met someone in a similar situation to mine who has shown no signs of homicidal tendencies or lunacy. As well as I actually have things to contribute, which is always a good feeling. I felt so lost in that last world at times, not knowing what everyone thought I was.
"My current thoughts on order are to construct a floatable raft, of large enough dimensions that it could be used as the deck of a boat. This way we have the smallest downtime before we have a means off this island when we need to. Once that's done, I'll begin working to establish a set of cabins under the deck and a storage room that is sheltered from the sea spray for our belongings and food. In this process I'll start with the deck and use woodcrafting to actually grow and expand the wood lower, which will reduce the manpower of needing to construct the hull seperately and then lift the deck on,as well as making a seamless exterior. It's faster to use wood that exists than to convince it to grow, so if you can keep me stocked with logs it'll make that part go much faster, as it's just getting the furies to move from one place to another at that point. At that point we'll have a ship, with a head to cut through water better, as that'll be in my initial raft design, and cabins. At that point I think we should get the boat into the water fully and tie it off with rope, making the rope if we need to. The small garden will be next, along side with loading food into the storage as well as seeds and our gear. The garden will be in the back of the boat, and have access to sunlight. I then want to make a covered shack on the deck, with openings to see in all four directions and a roof.  The last thing I have in mind is a rudder system and sails, although I don't have any idea where we would get an adequate amount of canvas. Worst case scenario is I can try moving us using watercrafting while we're adrift, but I'd be more comfortable managing it with windcrafting and woodcrafting. But that's far enough down the road we should probably focus on the first parts, and getting a floatable, and hopefully comfortable boat."

I tend to push myself hard, but not to dangerous limits. Uncomfortable periods of headaches after crafting are acceptable to me right now, doing heavy crafting while already crafting fatigued is not. I'll keep working at that pace for as long as we have or until circumstances change.

He leaves the drafting and boat design to you since you are obviously much better at them.

"Yes. I wasn't planning on using that unless it was absolutely needed. One of my magic styles is strained at the moment. And I would rather not use the other one so my aura can heal. So I'm rather limited in the help I can do.  But it sounds like you have a good plan. Let's get these logs arranged for you to work then I'll work on getting the other logs down here."

He helps by using that psionic power he was using before to cause the log to float a few feet off the ground. You still have to push it around and deal with its inertia. But That's relatively easy with both of you working on it.

Once they are arranged how you want them, he goes to get more log as you work on fusing the logs together with woodcrafting. by nightfall you have a seamless deck that is 40 feet long by 15 feet wide and 4 inchs thick and you have the other 10 logs on the beach.

"I guess we should get our stuff and put it on the deck. Want to build a fire? The night sould be relatively warm."
At this point his stomach growls.
"Eh. We should look for food too..."
You getting very hungry yourself.

"I've got some rations from Alera still, we can each have one of those tonight, it's been a long day and I'd rather not go off hunting just now."

I'll get some rocks, small branches and tinder, and a few larger pieces and get started making a fire, with a fire circle for safety. (Eagle Scout here, some habits are hard to break, even if it is on a beach surrounded by volcanic sand) I'll planning to build one that'll last at a low burn for the night. Once I have it all arranged, I'll use a tiny bit of firecrafting to start the fire. It's an easy application with a properly built fire, since it's so ready to light anyway. If the crafting doesn't work, use some of the matches I have. I'm trying to avoid using too many consumables though. They'll help in cases where crafting would be difficult.

"Progress is coming along well, tomorrow would you be willing to gather some fruits and seeds from nearby while I try and get the cabins and storage room done?" I'm saying this as I'm loading my stuff, and helping with carrying his stuff onto the deck (I'm assuming he has more possessions than I do. "And we'll need some dirt too, that's one thing i don't think I'd be able to craft up, and there will be a severe lack of it when it comes to the ocean."

I use some of my bundled clothes as a pillow, and use my aleran water resistant cloak as a light blanket for the night. Hopefully by tomorrow night I have enough done that we can sleep in cabins.

"My goal for tomorrow is to have the boats cabins and storage room done, make the ropes required to tie the boat to shore, along with some heavy rocks for anchors, and then move the boat into the water, not far enough out to free float but enough to reduce the work we'll have if we need to push off in a hurry. We should do that at high tide, to make sure we don't set it's distance too far out and end up adrift early. That and to have seeds, dirt and fruit,as well as our belongings safely in the storage room. I doubt I'll have time to craft up the furniture in the cabins, but I do intend to make a desk and bed in each. That may be after we're adrift though, as I get more and more used to the furies in the boat things will get easier with finery like that."

Surprisingly Magnus travels very light, All he has is what he is wearing and a pack.

"Thank you for the food. I don't mind searching for fruit and seeds tomorrow. Do you think you'll have enough material to finish it? As for rope and sail I don't have anything we could use on me but I do remember that certain plants in the tropic produce long fibers that we could try to use to make them."

He pulls out his own brown cloak and uses his pack as a pillow.

"Sounds like a plan."

You don't hear anything more out of him.
You fall asleep and wake up soon after dawn with the sun in your eyes. Magnus is up and is doing some stretches.

"ah. Your up Mike. Did you get a good rest? I had an idea last night. You might consider making wide flat dishes to scoop up some seawater in and let it evaporate. So we could get salt out of it. That would be useful to preserve meat with. what do you think?"

"It's enough material, as part of woodcrafting is being able to make even dead wood grow, it's all about convincing the furies that they want to go in the direction you want, in this case that direction is growth and in the areas I want. It does take considerably more effort than just telling them to move here, and join with others, but it's at least a good starting point. I'm going to see how far I can get with the materials without doing that and then start that method. If we end up with enough time for you to knock down a few more trees it would definitely speed it along and help out a great deal, but it's all a matter of priorities currently."

"I wouldn't be able to identify those plants or know about how to extrude or weave them together, if we have time we can tackle that issue though, perhaps gather some if you come across it in your fruit and seed gathering?

In the morning I wake up and stretch my arms wide, getting the kinks from sleeping on a beach without adequate padding out of my muscles. "Morning Magnus, I slept as well as can be expected, I can sleep most anywhere as long as I pay attention to my muscles in the morning it doesn't get too bad. I see you're familiar with that mentality though" gesturing to his own stretching  "and that sounds like a good idea, I'll make 2 during my work today, probably when I need a slight break as it should be a fairly simple job due to the smaller scale. Once I'm fully awake I want to get some of my crafting in before eating, and then I'll use meals as a natural break in the process." Smiling I go through a small series of stretches just to loosen up my arms, back and legs and then jog on over to the boat and set to work

After you finish with breakfast and talking, Magnus goes into the jungle to look for the things you'll need for the boat. returning every once in a while to unload the things he has gathered.

You manage to build the hull, cabins and storage areas with the material you have. You also finished two wooden plates during your breaks. One or two more trees would be enough to finish every thing you though of. It's about an hour after noon now.

I'll take a 5 minute break, and then unpack my saber and concentrate on its metal furies to see how strong it is and just familiarize myself. I plan to use metal crafting to sharpen its edge and maintain is and use it to hack down some smaller trees from back where Magnus started clearing. Not tried this before  but the principle is sound, much like when sparring with another metalcrafter I had to strengthen the steel to stop it from breaking, and sharpen it to be more effective, the same should allow me to apply it here.

I was a bit lucky. I had some skill in martial arts when I first versed out and the multiverse has let me hone that skill. It doesn't matter too much though. Versers are a resourceful lot. If you want to learn your will pick it up from somewhere eventually. Or make it yourself. Actually that could be said of all skills."

You move to the clearing that Magnus made.
You focus on the furies in your sword. You feel like it is a descent weapon that is made of good metal. It's not spectacular but it will serve well for now. You give it a razor edge and start trying to hack the trees down. You can cut the ones that two or three inches wide with a few hits. But the ones that are 6 inches or more would take a lot longer. You realize that your saber just doesn't have the heft needed to go through more than a few inches of wood at a time.

I work on the small trees then, cutting down extra instead of trying for the larger ones. Once I have 3 or 4 of the smaller ones I'll bring them back to the ship and continue about my work, after taking a short break at the edge of the water, resting from the hard work and enjoying the view. I find my mind wondering how long we have, and what seeing a volcano erupt will look like.

Ooc)No problem, I appreciate any rate that your comfortable with and have the time for. :). Thanks again for running the game.

"Hail Magnus, it looks like the gathering is coming along nicely.  The storage area has been finished, and I think with these 4 trees I may be close to having enough lumber to finish up. Shouldn't take long either. I'll finish this up and then perhaps we can get the wrestling demonstration in. It would be easier to do it before being out on the water."

My idea for the rudder system is to have it fury controlled, creating it supple and then so that if I need to woodcraft it I can touch the boat anywhere and manipulate it and since it was created with that in mind hopefully it should listen fairly easily.

"We'll just make due without the rope or sails then, thank you for looking"

"The beach will work well enough, I'm going to need a couple more logs, but let's do the wrestling first, it'll be a nice break after getting the food loaded"

After helping load the food, I'll move onto the beach sand and demonstrate the stance used for cave man style "For this style, keeping a low cg and good balance is the most important part. You'll be trying to both keep your opponent from being able to pin you and put you in a bad position, while doing exactly that to them. Both of which require good control over your weight. It normally leads to a choke out, either until unconscious or dead."

After Magnus adopts the style I'll walk him through the slap ability:
"This move is utilized to put your opponent off balance, leading in to your more critical moves. It doesn't have the most impactful defense, but you aren't exposing yourself much with it either. It's good for probing at what an opponent is capable of."

Next will be the pinning attack:
"The purpose of pinning is two fold, it makes it more difficult for the opponent to strike at you effectively, especially with a non wrestling designed move, and also sets you up to bring them into a choke hold more easily."

And finally the choke hold:
"With this one it's obviously important to not carry it the full way through when demonstrating, so I'll just demonstrate up to having the connection established and then let go. The purpose here is pretty simple, you constrict your opponents airway until they either tap out or go unconscious, or die."

I'll go through each move performing it, and then having Magnus perform it on me until he is comfortable with each and then move onto the next. Once we're done:
"And that's what I learned from the missing links, it's simple but effective, and works great at close range. Let's take a small break, and then you mentioned demonstrating your style?"

He mimics the stance and you can see that he is very close to what you are doing. after a few minor corrections he gets it. You go though the other skills and he picks them up quickly although he already knows how to pin and do a choke hold.

"Yes, Of course."
He takes a break with you then starts showing you his style
He takes up a stance reminiscent of a boxers but a little lower to the ground.

"This is your basic fighting stance. nothing Fancy but a good mix of offence and defense."
He then shifts out of it. And guilds you into the stance and shows you how to move around wile in it.
He then shows you some basic strikes. Jabs, crosses hook and uppercuts for your arms. and some basic kicks like flip kicks and crescent kicks.

"Here are some stronger kicks that will make the fight go faster if you can make them hit."
He then show you the round house kick and a side kick.

"Let's work on these for awhile until you are used to them."

OOC: I'll get you the stats for the style and maneuvers soon. Do I need to go into details about what the kicks are or are you already familiar with what those martial ares moves should look like?

The two of you walk back to the clearing and he draws the Zweihander out of the sheath on its back. For one you can Feel the blood-lust coming from the sword and a desire for battle. For Another you can also feel the sword getting angry at Magnus's intent to use it to cup a tree down.

After cutting down the trees but before walking back "So I should be finished by tonight or tomorrow morning, is there anything you would like to handle on the island that we should prioritize? I think we're looking pretty good all things considered. We could always set off before the eruption, which would decrease our risk at little cost as long as we're done with what we need the island for."

As mentioned, I'm hoping to finish the construction by that night, early the next morning at the latest, but short of communing with the volcano which seems to be a bad idea. Although not one I've completely ruled out, I don't have much I want to sort out on the island.

It's a good idea, and I've been considering it while I've been working. It's likely to be a big fury, but that would also make it quite useful to claim. I'll try it tomorrow morning, after a good nights rest so I'm not struggling with any crafting exhaustion."

------------

When I wake up the next morning I'm going to spend a little time stretching, and then relaxing and embracing the furies around me. Just getting my mind ready, focusing on all the furies present, but paying special attention to the local fire furies and they're temperament and attitude. Once done with that I'll wave to Magnus as I set off on huge hike towards the volcano, "I'm off, I would suggest being on the boat and ready to go within half an hour. If this goes bad I'm going to be coming in like a storm and making to leave fast."

When I get to the base of the mountain I start exerting my crafting out towards the fire fury of the mountain, compelling them to follow my will and come with me. Shouting, "Great Fire Fury, hear me. Come, follow my will and we will grow in strength together. I can offer you that which this land can not, the ability to travel, interact, and grow. You are already strong, as am I. Together we will be stronger." Through which I'm lacing fire craftings to infuse passion into the words, just as much to hopefully prove my worthiness and potentially effect the fury.

I brace myself, assuming the stance that is both for my wrestling style but also, since it was learned from the ape like missing links, a good posture for denoting that I'm an alpha and beat my chest in response, a carefully measured response to be just slightly more than he did, but not much more. I want to assert I am the alpha, and that he should follow me. But not as a subordinate but as a near equal. All the while I'm pushing my fury crafting influence out, both to attempt to convert him to follow me as well as to keep dangerous levels of heat from burning me.

"I can feel your desire to spread, and I can relate to that. I offer you that chance. Without me, you can spread over this entire island, a mighty and grand domain may it be, it has limits. I know how to traverse the oceans, I can lead you across the water furies that would smother your passion without letting them touch you. But I offer more than just that. I have been to Worlds beyond this one, and will take you with me to see and expand in them. Lands where your kind as revered for the truly powerful being that you are. If you just will follow me."

At the end of which I extend my hand, and also extend my crafting senses to offer a degree of welcome and passion for exploration and learning. I am attempting to demonstrate that I have the power to stand before him, the means to bring him to otherwise inhospitable locations, and that I have and understand the passions and desires that are all so important to fire furies.

Said quietly while working on all this "well you weren't kidding about your magic, it's certainly powerful and looks to be dangerous currently. I believe he'll honor our deal, in which case I just gained a powerful fire fury."

"Thank you for being so prepared by the way Magnus, I don't think I could have moved the boat fast enough with crafting to avoid that all."

After a bit, I'm going to mention turning in early to get some sleep, I'll investigate our surroundings in the morning.

Come morning, once I'm refreshed I'll use my wind crafting far seeing to scout the horizons and look for land as well as look at how the volcanic island is. I'll also try to commune with the woods furies for a while, no purpose in mind other than to effectively introduce myself. We're going to be interacting for a while I suspect and it would be easiest if they cooperated.

I'm also waiting for my fire fury to appear, although I know It may take longer if I'm not near any fires and I may have to go to one to help him along, but starting a fire on the ship seems sub ideal so waiting until landfall it most likely is.

"So exploding islands are a little more common in this new life I guess." Chuckling at my own joke. "It's definitely a lot to adjust to, but it definitely has given me ample ways to learn new things which is nice"

Once I feel the fire furies presence I'll mention to Magnus, "Well it looks to have worked at least, the fire fury has decided to join my journey, I can sense his presence. I'll need to come up with a name to call him. I think I'll name him Zeke, feels appropriate for some reason."

After looking out and seeing nothing I'll call Magnus over to take a look through my far seeing, holding my hands out to allow him to see through it. "Looks like there's no land other than that island in sight. And it's going to take quite a while to cool down, and much longer to be habitable again. First order of business should be getting those seeds planted and see how much I can produce in a day through woodcrafting. After we have our sustainable food source established I say we pick a direction and I start trying to watercraft the ocean to take us in that direction. Oh and I'll finish the beds, desk and seats in the rooms as a break from the otherwise heavy crafting required with everything else. I think it'll be easier in terms of effort but just complicated which will be nice to try."

So to sum that up, my plan over the next several days consists of:
Establish garden on deck using seeds and ground that was gathered before departure.
Pick a direction to travel.
Go below deck, to the point closest to the water, and exert my influence and try and use that to move in chosen direction.
Finish furniture in various rooms on days where the heavy crafting is strainer me a little too hard.

"I am, I simply hadn't asked because I wasn't sure it was appropriate to ask questions about something that seems so dangerous currently. I'm assuming the runes around the ship are effectively conduit for the magic to pulse through?"

Edit: As a follow up it occured to me that since Magnus has opened the door to ask questions on magic, asking what I'm most interested in could help moving forward.

"So since you brought it up, I assume it's ok to ask some questions.  What's the major difference between psionics like my furycrafting and Magic? I've been trying to figure out a way with furycraft to accelerate how much rest I get while sleeping, is that possible with Magic and would it be easier or harder to do? I notice that magic seems to have a fair amount of build up time to be safe, so I imagine it's a little trickier to use in combat, but perhaps permanently enchanting a sword or clothing before hand would be helpful. I have a furycraft enhanced cloak that repels water. And are there dangers in melding magically enchanted swords and furycrafted psionic enhancements?"

"Oh, also if you desire I can show you what I know of furycraft. I'm no substitute for the teachers at the academy or a high lords son, but Im not weak in them either."

"The reason my magic is more dangerous than other magic is because I injured my soul by containing too much power within myself. I'm giving you this information so you don't permanently hurt yourself from doing something ill advised. Anyway, let's sit down. This Will take a bit.

He sit's on the deck of the ship. He thinks for a bit to gather his thought's.

"Ok, I could go into detail about the differences. But that wont help you without a frame of reference. So here is an analogy to help you visualizes it.
Imagine an insanely powerful computer that runs a simulation that models a world in perfect detail. within that simulation are people like you and me. obviously they can't tell they are in a simulation because it is a perfect simulation. Acting within the simulation involves things like technology and using your body to achieve your aims. Magic is using forces outside of the simulation to achieve your objectives. The methods vary. From asking an Administrator to do something for you. To asking an outside hacker to do something for you.  To directly hacking the simulation itself. or gathering up spare bit's of processing power to run your own programs. It's all magic. Psionics are different from magic. Psionics are... Well They are like rules that are built into the simulation that souls or minds can tap into. They work with the simulation instead of punching it in the face to get it to do what you want.

As for your other questions. Generally there is no reason why an item can't be both a Magic item and a Psionic item. Unless you made the powers oppose each other for some reason.

I can't think of a way with just furycrafting besides just increasing your raw stamina with... Metal or earth if I had to guess. Anyway. There are meditative exercises that tap into psionic power that could help. or once you work up to it you might be able to cast a spell to make it like you rested.

As for the build up time until casting. It's dependent on how you envision magic.
Some mages do it like that. others can fire something off but have to recharge afterward. Some can separate the charging and firing stages.

Most versers would tell you figure out these things yourself. I hesitated myself, because what I tell you could limit your conceptual growth in magic."

When you mention teaching furycrafting to him he smirks. "You have already shown me most of it."

Glantri's Island

I nod along, listening intently and very interested, trying to both file everything away and let my mind explore all of the possibilities. I've got some in mind already.

"Ok, I think I understand the difference between the two. And that makes sense based on my start in furycrafting,  I do things that I know the furies both have a tendency towards and also that could happen. I could make the wood furies produce arrows by rapidly growing and then shaping, or have them bend into a bow, but I couldn't for example have them turn into a metal sword. It's just not what they do. Magic however wouldn't care that it's not possible and just do it."

"Stretching out my endurance is possible with metalcrafting, including pushing off fatigue. I haven't had the need to do so yet though. Perhaps I'll try meditating as you mentioned, but instead of trying to tap into furycrafting for it I'll try to tap directly into my psionic stores instead. I think ill try that tonight."

"Those alternate time restrictions definitely seem more appropriate for some skills, although I like the idea of crafting magic taking prep work."

"Why would it limit my potential? As long as I keep an open mind that it isn't just the way you mention, but there are others out there, I imagine I'll be ok. But I assume you already came to that conclusion or you wouldn't have brought this up."

"Ah well yes, true."
(I had simply forgotten about that part, my bad. )

"So is there somewhere that I should start with magic? Anything to avoid? The short list of what I'd like to experiment with is:
enchanting clothing to allow it to facilitate furycrafting, say weaving fire essence into the fabric, or any of the fury elements, and boost their power with magic. Effectively making the clothing or a sword a conduit for my crafting.
Short range personal teleportation
Recharging electronics directly, I tried thinking of how to with crafting but the closest I came was electrocuting the device and hoping
Fixing my nearsightedness, I'd love to not have glasses, especially for a primitive world."

"I'm assuming some or all of that are un advisable to start with though. So advice?"

"I wouldn't be so sure of that. Psionics might be able to do that too. Not with Furies though. They definitely can't do that.

That might work, I'm not sure though. I'm not as familiar with psionics as I am with Magic.

Let me share one of the problems I had. Before I couldn't imagine using magic without channeling mana or chi or some other form of energy into the spell. It took being taught an entirely different style of magic for me to figure out that channeling energy into a spell isn't strictly necessary. This is an example of a rut in my thought process. Anyway just be careful with how you think.

Don't worry about it. I tend to do that on my own. I tend to reverse engineer anything interesting that I see. Although Being taught something instead of reverse engineering it on my own might be nice.

Making magic item now isn't a good idea for you now. I'd wait until your confidant in your magic. One I tried to make a item that was beyond my ability to make. It exploded in my face and sent me to my next world. You Might be able to help your crafting temporally with a blessing. Teleportation is possible but would be difficult for you now. I'd would work on something else first. Recharging electronics would require a great deal of fine control over magic. You could do it once you have a bit of experience with magic. Me... I'd probably fry the item on a good day. As for fixing you eyesight. That is doable now. But you might want to subcontract for this. Do you believe in any gods? or one God?"

OOC: Editing finished now. you can post.

"I'll keep an open mind on psionics as well then, looking for areas where I should be applying a raw psionic method rather than through furycrafting. Or from a form I learn in the future."

"I see,  I'll try and keep an eye out for issues like that, although my natural tendency towards exploration and learning should help. I find it hard to pass up on learning another's way or technique, even if I think my way is better. More vantage points is always helpful."

"Well the offer stands, if you would like to be taught any of it as opposed to reverse engineering I'm happy to."

"I'm fairly agnostic actually, I've always thought I'd live a good life and be good to people. If there is a god or multiple gods, that should be enough. But what do you mean subcontract? As in trying to get a god to do it for me instead of doing it myself? If it's all the same I think I'd rather learn the direct approach. So it sounds like starting on my vision is the best idea, does magic word a specific way? I've read lots of fantasy books, some have concepts like the will and the word from the beglariad, where you form your will to what you want, gather power and release it using an appropriate word. Others like those from Elantris used drawing runic patterns in the air, which is fairly similar to the weaving from wheel of time I suppose. My point being there different types I've read about, and I've seen you use runic magic of some kind. Should I pattern it after what you did, or pick one from a book I've read or is there a correct way to do it? If possible, I'd like to follow the precepts of the Belgariad to start, it is one of the ways I'm most familiar with, and it does have a gods, I'd be most ready too follow Aldur, he was a good man in the books. And I realize I just started by saying I'd rather do this without help, but it occurs to me that if I could choose any god, even one from books, there are some I wouldn't mind being follower of. He does after all support learning."

"That would be nice. I'll teach you some basic psionics in exchange.

Sorry Subcontract is my idea of a joke. All holy magic is asking a god to do something for you. For some reason learning how to ask a god to do something for you helps you to learn to do it for yourself. Although it isn't strictly needed. Hmmmm... I need to do some more research into that...

Anyway. Be careful about which god you pick. The more aid they give the more they will expect  out of you. As for me personally. I'm technically a follower of Athena, Goddess of wisdom and Strategy. But I generally just talk to her when I really need advice. I don't call for much aid beyond that.  As for the other Greek gods. They don't like me very much.

I haven't heard of those books before. so I can't comment on their magic or gods. But there is probably a world based on the book... or the book is based on the world. It get's complicated.
anyway those magic systems are probably right somewhere. so there is no reason you can't use them. I actually would Like to hear about them to see if my current version of of the Grand Unifying Theory of Magic can handle explaining them. Which system makes the most sense to you and for what reason compared to the other systems you know about?"

"The will and the word from the Belgariad makes the most sense to me. As far as I remember the concept was one could affect the world around them by forming what they want in their mind, the will, and releasing it with an appropriate phrase, the word. Belgarath, one of the main wizards in the book once taught that an important concept of magic was that it took just as much work as the physical form, it just sometimes allowed you to be in a better position to apply the work. For example, one could push on a boulder and make it move with magic, but it would take a lot of energy, but if one were to exert their magical effort to try and roll the Boulder, it would take much less work. Actually after talking about it, that might be psionic from your explanation before, it does have a lot of similarities to my furycrafting. I think I'll avoid that as my starting place for magic, and perhaps try the magic from the wheel of time. It made sense, although there would have been some issues with a man using it.

See, in that book, there were two sources of power. Saidin and saidar, one was accessible by men and one by women. At some points in the wheel of time though, Saidin was tainted and would drive men who touched it insane. Each source had a different way to touch it, but the method for touching Saidin was to form a picture of a flame inside and focus only on that, pushing all emotion away and allowing for a trance like focused state. This was also used for swordsman to focus in combat. once one was embracing this technique, called the flame and the void, the would embrace Saidin, allowing it to flood them with power. Then a pattern is traced in the air and the power is released and given form. Perhaps I could try that? Although I'd like you to watch over me, I do fear if the taint is there when I touch saidin that it could have some rather strong effects such as causing me to convulse or wretch, depending on how strongly I connect."

"Hmmm... Gather Will and release with a word. It might be Magic or Psionics. If it's psionics then it's a rather strange brand like your Furycrafting. It's rather flexable for a magic system. Conservation of Effort if a rather interesting limitation. It's a good was to make sure the magic doesn't blow up in your face. Hmm... It's rather like Magecraft in the Nasuverse in that regard. Anyway it might be ok as your starting style, But I would think over your other options before you start. You said you are a avid fantasy reader. You should have other ones that you have read besides those two series. I'm not saying this one is bad. it's just that you have time to consider your options.

As for that other style... I wouldn't recommend it. The male side of that power is tainted and will eventually drive men who touch it insane. You described two techniques that can draw power from it relatively safely. But that is relatively safe in the sense that using the power of the Warp from Warhammer is relatively safe. You'll have to be constantly vigilant lest you become tainted by the power you wield. Your's seems milder than the Warp, since it only has some minor physical effects and possibly insanity. As opposed to all that and ripping temporary holes in reality and getting possessed by a Daemons... Again It's up to you if you decide to use it. Theoretically I could punch the insanity out of you. It'll be rather unpleasant and I will probably have to fight a spirit of insanity afterwards... Anyway I don't think it's good as a first style.

What other magic systems come to mind?"

"Hmmm, well a lot of the systems got rules out do to requirements or reliance on physical objects which I wouldn't have access to right now. Just thinking out loud to list them, but Alloymancy from the mistborn trilogy involves injesting and burning precise metal compounds, which each have different effects, from being able to push or pull on other metals to soothing or rioting emotions and so on. But I don't have those metals, and the limitations are fairly strict to what they can do. Ferochemy from the same series allows one to store ones attributes in those metals while wearing them and call on them later. That will be useful, especially being able to store weight or increase weight using my previously stored amonut, but I would need to find an iron bracelet or other piece of iron to use, my sword is steel which is used to store steel. But once again, very limited in applications, even if some are incredibly useful.

Past that there are a number that use incantations and spellbooks, often assisted with wands or staffs, from Dungeons and Dragons wizards to the wizards in the Dresden files to Harry Potter, but none of those sources really go into HOW things are done, just that they are. I suppose I may remember some key words from individual books, but not most that's for sure.

Then there's the stormlight archive, which I remember a lot about the magic system, it's actually based on following the ideals of your order. But I only know 3 of the ideals of one order. Not to mention it's based on absorbing stormlight, a phenomenon of Roshar that has tremendous storms of lightning and wind and also stormlight. The system is rather impossible to use outside of that. Perhaps that's one of the problems, I like books where the magic has a lot of limitations on it's use, it makes for a more interesting read. Perhaps video games are a better source for my first type of magic and then move on to these others at another time, or wait until I land in a world that has a similar type and learn from people who know it?

On the topic of video games, the system I know best would be Final Fantasy's materia system. The general concept is that magic is channeling the life essence of the world, which when concentrated highly enough forms beads of materia. It would probably be easiest if I had one of those beads, but I can probably try something small and slow without one. Perhaps just a basic wind spell to summon up a gust, just to see if I can get it working tapping into this worlds power."

"Wait...Alloymancy? I've been there! oh, I need to figure out how to get back to the Final Empire. Things need to change there. I need to punch the ruling power in the face. I've seen some of the magic there in use and was able to copy it. Haven't used it much because As you said it's hard to find the pure tin need to boost strength. or store it... Anyway, This would be useful to pick up but I wouldn't use it as your primary style.

I'm not that familiar with The Dresden Files or Harry Potter. but they seem fairly standard for fantasy magic. So it probably involves channeling you personal magic into a spell. As for the wand or staff, You can grow one from the boat and I could alter it to make it easier to channel magic though it. You could use it to channel magic without my alteration too.

It's up to you really. I'm a bit biased in this. My early views on magic where influenced by a variety of video games, anime and literature. So I had a fairly broad base to work with.

Ah Final Fantasy 7. That was one of the major influences my view of magic. Hmmm. Now that I think about it, the planet would sic the Weapons on me if I showed up there. Anyway, I've seen something like Materia in my travels. They are gems of pure magical energy that contain the knowledge of a spell or series of spells or a technique. Normally they form in area where the geomancy of the area concentrates the lifestream or other flavor of magic...
Ok here it a bit that will help you out in the long run.
Qi; Chi; Ki; Mana; Lifestream; Quintessence; Aether; Essence: All these are basically the same thing. But different flavors. Use what you got and what it is inclined to do.

Anyway. I could try to make one to help you out. it's rather dangerous for me to try. I might explode or something else unpleasant. or I could make what I call a Pseudomateria out of carbon. it's much weaker but it is easier to make. Up to you which one you want."

There's a much worse force he's fighting, had he lived just a little longer in the story I read he would have been able to fend off the god for another 1000 years and potentially set things right again. Immortality with a grave responsibility and a god of ruin pressing on his mind  at all times didn't do him any favors. If you do decide to take him out, stick around the well until it fills, it's power must be used up, not released. Ah, but I'm rambling a bit. It's just one of my favorites so I know it quite well, and The Lord rulers death was in some ways one of most catastrophic events in the series. But the world did make it through.

Let's try a little from a Harry potter/Dresden files blend and some pseudomateria. I'd much rather you don't hurt yourself. I think I'd rather have a wand, it's easier to hide even if it can't hide in plan sight as a walking stick."

And with that I go to the rail of the ship, close my eyes and form an image of a wand and urge the wood to grow into its shape and then cut it off.

I heft the stick in my hand, woodcrafting it a little more to make it form a comfortable handgrip and a consistent taper from its hilt to its tip. Then hand it to Magnus. "You said you could enhance it somehow? And what types of psuedomateria can you make? You grow a wand out of the wood of the ship.

"Huh? god of ruin? Was that the powerful source of energy that I felt at the palace?

Yes. I think I can make general better at channeling magic though it. I Know I can make it great at destruction. Or maybe make it be good to healing... Maybe.

Theoretically I can make a psudomateria for any spell I know. It'll probably explode when you use it if I put something like Ultima into it. Or if I try something too fancy. I got sent into my next world when I tried to make one that produced an energy Chainsword. But that was when I was starting out. I should be ok now. Now to gather the materials for a psudomateria."

He lumbers to his feet and walks over to the rail of the ship. He places his hand on the rail and closes his eyes. You feel the wood furies scream in agony as he uses raw will to force them to do what he wants. He doesn't quite get it right so he ends up just ripping a ball of wood out of the railing.

"Damn. Something's off. it didn't grow. Anyway to make a Psudomateria you need a source of nearly pure carbon. Charcoal work."

He releases the ball of wood and it floats in front of him.

"Destruction of nature, Gather in Flames! Fire!"
The ball bursts into flames. After a second a cold wind blows in and chills you to the bone and gutters out the flame. Leaving a piece of charcoal.
Magnus actually looks surprised at that.
"Huh? Never had that help me out. meh. Any question before I start?"

"I'd prefer the wand be better at healing. As for the psuedomateria, would something that could create food or water be possible? It would let me practice while being useful and also contributing to our stores."

I cringe as I see his attempts at woodcrafting go wrong, and lay my hand on the wood, working to ease the wood furies pain and comfort them with my own crafting. "You will want to encourage wood furies in the direction you desire, allow them to grow that way. They can't just be forced, or well they can, but it's painful for them and gives you a rougher time. It's much better to open their path and let them grow into the new space."

On the othere hand, no one said DnD was multiversal in applicability and that would be effectively making matter from nothing. Which while doable is sort of hard. I'll do it after I make a healing pseudomateria. Since I'm not sure if I can make a healing wand.

He sits down in a lotus position and holds the lump of charcoal in his hands. After about ten minutes he cracks the outer layer of charcoal and reveals a spherical gem that is about an inch in diameter.  It sparkles with a white light.

Fair enough, it didn't occur to me that it's making it from nothing, it's just nice to be able to always have access to food and clean water. Healing is a fine place to start, and then with healing materia a destruction based wand would be great. Fills in the different gaps.

Impressive, will it have to be socketed into an item I'm wearing or wielding, or is being on my person enough. Perhaps held? I could work on crafting a wooden bracelet with sockets while you infuse it with a basic healing spell, whichever generic type of healing you feel would be best as a starting point. Either low level gradual generic healing or possibly healing exhaustion. Either of those would be excellent and I imagine a good starting point"

Working with souls is a rather delicate process. One that I have a rather hard time doing do to my nature. I would recommend waiting for a bit before you try to work on souls.

It would. It's going to be something I will research now. Give me a few days for the spell.

You should be able to use it by holding it. A real Materia would require such an item but a Pseudomateria has looser requirements but is weaker overall. A socketed item would be useful for you to keep it on-hand without occupying your hands.

Your affinity with wind will help you cast the spell I'm going to put into it. It's a simple one line spell that heals a decent amount for a marginal amount of magical energy.I'll show you after I make the Pseudomateria.

He continues his concentration. Over the next hour the glow shifts from white to green. Once there is no more white glow, Magnus opens his eyes and speaks.
"Haa...There. It is finished."
He gets up.
"I will show you how to use it."
He takes out a Black Dagger and does a shallow cut in his left hand. He doesn't visibly react to this and holds his cut hand up.

"Life's Refreshing Breeze, Heal from the Sky! Cure!"
There is a bit of a light show with white and green light forming around his cut hand then

He hands you the cure pseudomateria.

You perform the chant and feel the pseudomateria draw energy out of you that you where not aware of before. It feels like it took nearly half of that type energy within you. On the plus side it completely healed your hand.

"Good job. That was a bit more draining for you than I expected. Your magical energy should recover with rest."

Do I feel drained other than knowing that that type of energy is lower than normal?

"Huh, that was a strange feeling. It's like realizing a muscle has started becoming sore, but from a limb I never knew was even there. I take it when one gets more versed in magic they can see others energy stores and how much they are reduced? I think I'll refer to that store as mana, since I took final fantasy as my reference, and to keep things straight in my mind. But yes, it did feel rather draining, I feel like I might be able to handle that again, can't tell precisely, but definitely not a third time. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to continue practicing with it.

I think I'll spend the rest of the remaining day practicing with my sword, it occurred to me from thinking of magic structures in books I've read that even if I don't work on learning to channel Saidin from the wheel of time, I'd like to learn the focus required to do so. It's supposed to help with more than channeling, especially blade work. All the blademasters in that universe used it. It was also called the oneness, as it focused on feeding all emotion into the flame, allowing it to be consumed so you were one with the blade and the world around. Would you like to join my practice? I can practice basic patterns by myself, but wouldn't mind sparring practice. It would also give you the opportunity to practice furycrafting where I can comment on any ways you might approach it easier. Assuming he is, I'll move to the center of the deck, sheathed sword in hand and draw it, resting the scabbard on the stairs down to the lower section. I will assume a defensive stance, relaxed and ready to react to what comes at me, and form the flame and the void in my mind. I picture the burning flame and feed all distractions into it, becoming one with the blade. He turns around and settles into a back stance with the zwiehander held behind him.
He closes his eyes a moment and mimics your fury crafting. The Metal furies sing in his sword and come together harder and more durable than ever. But he looks utterly confused with your wind crafting.

"...Ready."
He starts walking towards you maintaining his stance. As he get's in range, he performs a powerful and lightning quick sideways swing which you barely parry with your saber and speed.
He has switched his stance to hold his Zwiehander like a spear to keep you at bay.

But if you give me an interesting description such as "I rush under his guard then uppercut him in his jaw.", You get bonuses to the attack roll. The better the description the better the bonuses.

I dart in, dodging in a spin to avoid the spear like thrust and using the momentum to go for a glancing blow on his dominant arm.

Since they're not practice swords I don't want to inflict much damage, but I can easily see times when bleeding an opponent to weaken them slowly is valuable. I know the concept of a blademaster holding an opponent at bay while delivering small knicks that slowly eat away at the opponents ability to keep fighting is fairly common in fantasy, which is what I'm trying to practice here.

You where correct to predict that he was about to thrust with his sword.
He barely misses you as you come into his guard swinging.
He raise his zwiehander into a block against your sideways swing but you get through and deliver a cut to his upper right arm. It's bleeding slowly now.
He then surprises you by switching his grip on the sword  and then bringing the pommel up and strike you in the jaw with it. You instinctively moved to dodge but it wasn't enough to avoid the blow. That was rather painful but he is open at the moment as he hasn't had time to reset his position.
He is smirking.

With that exchange of blows you have determined that you have the advantage when it comes to raw speed and you edge him out slightly when it comes to defense. He's good with that zwiehander though and knows how to use it.

Smirking at the exchange myself, and spitting a little blood out, I dart in with a quick slash to the thigh, altering my direction using windcrafting to form a solid wall to brace off of and come in at an unexpected angle. Aiming for another quick light score and then to distance myself, forcing him to take the aggresive position or else let his arm and leg keep bleeding, which will eventually lead to my advantage in the spar.

Once at the out of range position I'll comment "you're faster with that big sword than I expected" smiling at the adrenaline coursing through my system and the opportunity to train.

I'm also using metalcraft to ignore pain, pulling on the metal furies natural stubbornness and hardiness

He tries to dodge your first slash but you get him good. Then you catch him by surprise with your next slash, again cutting him but you where too close to him for too long and he strikes out with fist. Delivering a hook into your midsection. That hurt nearly as much as the pommel strike. You move out of the engagement range and then he takes the time to reset he stance back to the spearlike one from before.

He comments back
"If one knows how to use them properly, they are faster than most depict them in the media.
You got me good a few times. But I can handle more. Do you want to continue?"

"Would you like me to try to use magic to cure your wounds? I should have enough for one more use today, and it avoids you stressing your soul."

"So one thing I noticed with your furycrafting, it's important to keep in mind that the different furies have personalities, it's easiest to get them to do what you want in the way that they want. Metal is very orderly, and a little stubborn, but you seemed to have no trouble with the metalcrafting. Wind needs to flow however, you can get it to be ordered, but it has to flow into your pattern, not be shoved or forced. It sounds minor, but it makes a big difference."

"I should probably check on windcrafting some farseeings to check if there is any land around, I want to tinker with using layered farseeings to increase my range of sight even further"

You can almost feel the sword on his back growl in annoyance at him.
"Oh, be quiet. You know you wouldn't enjoy a mere sparring match."

He turns back to you.
"It's up to you. I should heal up ok on my own by the end of the day. Those where some hard hits you endured.

As for the fury-crafting. I see what you mean. The metal furies did what I wanted because I naturally do it in a way they like. I'm having a hard time with wind though."

"Yeah, I have the biggest problem with water, it just seems to be further from my mindset. but it'll become easier over time, and as you see how furies do things."

"For the wand that we were discussing earlier, does it share the same power resevoir as the psuedomateria?"

I have nothing else I intend for the day other than healing my wounds one more time with the psuedomateria, and experimenting with farseeing. The following day I'm assuming will be dedicated to the wand creation and how to use it, unless I'm mistaken.

He nods at your words taking them in.

"This wand will be different from the pseudomateria and Dungeons and Dragons wands. Instead of storing a spell and casting it for you, it will make using destructive spells easier. If you make your Spells draw from your personal mana, then they will draw from your mana pool. Magic can draw from different things though. I've seen spells that draw on your stamina and fatigue you. One can also draw upon the power that's flowing through the land. Or draw on the Sun, Moon and Stars. It can be more dangerous than powering it yourself though... Where was I?...oh. I've also seen magic that is powered by ritual alone. But they take longer than powering it yourself."

--------------

You practice your farseeing for the rest of the day but you don't see anything important.

----------------

The next day you get up and find that Magnus is already up and staring at the wand. He asks you

"Do you want it aspected toward a certain element or destruction in general?"

Did you have any thoughts on what to do today? The ship mostly handles it's own movements, although we should still stay vigilant for land."

OOC: I'm running out of things I'd like to get accomplished, we've set up a relatively sustainable system, and got the pseudomateria and wand, perhaps a week to week, or month to month stretch coming up would make sense, as we continue to practice the fury crafting, psuedomateria, and occasional sparring, until something goes wrong or changes?

"Well I'm going to work on the wand for you. But you are right, we should look out for land."

He moves to the front of the ship and starts the ritual with the wand. After about an hour the wand starts having a pale white line glowing down its length. The line starts moving slowly over the wand and tracing symbols on the wand. After another hour, a rift tears open in front of him. It looks like it leads to an endless red plane. Then a big bronze giant with wild white hair and breard and glowing white eyes comes out and belts Magnus with a punch, sending him flying to the back of the ship where he crashes into the rail and is knocked unconscious.

"HOW DARE YOU SEAL ME WITHIN YOU PROGENITOR! WE BOTH CRAVE THE THRILL OF BATTLE! GET UP AND FIGHT ME!"

The wand is sitting there. It looks complete.

Edit: Forgot to mention. He is about 8 feet tall and built like a bronze god. he is wearing loose white pants and has a katana strapped to to small of his back.

I decide to stick with what I know in a fight, but that it's important to recover the wand, I make a roll to grab the wand and tuck into my pocket, depending on the nature of the fight I may need it here. I then raise to a readied stance with my hand on my sword, ready to draw.

"If you want a fight, you have one. Do you set forth any conditions?"

I'm calling upon both Zeke and Hermes, ready to manifest them to attack in conjuction with me if he makes the first moved. I'm also using my metalcrafting to enhance the sharpness of my blade, and windcrafting to increase my speed.

I nod, a certain amount of respect in my mind to the honor this man or creature has.

I shout for Zeke and Hermes, manifesting them and sending Zeke into an attack from the right, hermes to fly over and attack from behind while I charge in from the left, sword ready to strike when in range, and timing to strike all at once.

When moments away from impact I command the wood furies in the ship, those that I've had so much time to practice with, to reach up and grab the feet of this man, holding him for the incoming attack while I use the air furies around me to spin through an otherwise unnatural spiral to come at the mans head with the arc of my sword. Meanwhile hermes is going for a hamstringing attack, using his claws to tend the the opponents legs, while Zeke moves in to grapple and then turn up the heat, bursting into flames.

They both manifest. The winds whipping around Hermes cause Zeke to burn blue hot when he is near Hermes. You close in for the strike with Hermes and Zeke by your side And call on the wood furies of the ship. He just smirks when the vines wrap around his legs. Zeke Grapples his right side and causes it to glow red hot where he touches. Hermes moves behind him and strikes at his hamstrings. You hear screeches from his metallic skin. You spiral in with the help of the wind furies and cut into his neck. It goes in about an quarter inch with a metallic screech. It felt like you where cutting bronze. A trickle of blood comes from the wound.

"Good Boy. But You Need MORE!"

HE Elbows Zeke and sends him flying into the railing of the ship. Which catches on fire.
He then spins around and backhands you sending you rolling across the deck of the ship. And a front kick sends Hermes flying into the water.

He turns to you.

"I'm impressed boy. You managed to hurt me despite being so young. And it is interesting how you have those elemental spirits under your command.
You deserve to know my name. I am Augus, Indulgent Soul of Magnus, The Great Sage, Unequalled in Heaven.
Tell me. What is your name Boy?"

I smile with a certain amount of exhilaration at being pushed, and at my mild success. I turn my spiraling roll from the backhand into a controlled roll and then back to standing.  At the sight of the fire I extend my sword towards it and will the fire furies to stop burning the deck but to come dance along my blade instead, both adding something to following attacks if this continues and also solving the burning ship problem.

"It is an honor to meet one so powerful Augus, and I thank you for the compliment. I am Mike, born of Earth and scholar of Alera. I've seen but few worlds so far. You allowed me the first offense, are we to continue to your turn?"

I'm preparing my wind craft in case of an attack. I want to put up multiple images of myself to try and confuse Augus on which to hit, allowing me to dodge and counter with my flaming sword, going for the upper thigh this time. I'm curious if the flames will help the cutting.

He goes for a blindingly fast jab but you dodge it barely. He follows with a gut punch and gets a glancing blow on you. It sill really hurts. You strike his leg and cut another half inch cut into him. The fire did help a little bit. His leg is bleeding slightly now.

"I can see the Essence of your being. Right now it's barely brighter than a mortal's but you will grow and be a Glorious Fight!"

I focus on my metalcraft to keep the pain away, and revert back to a readied stance, analyzing his body language for any offensive action, or behavior that he's expecting me to back down from the fight. I'm willing to rest and talk, if that's what it looks like his body language suggests, but otherwise I'm planning to continue taking turns on the offense and defense, learning what I can in the process and having someone to use full unrestrained force to practice on.

Chuckling slightly I say "You're quite a bit faster than you look, y'know. What was that world you came from? I only got a brief glimpse?"

Once he looks to be ready for the next round, He's shown me honor so far, I'm not about to break it by trying to catch him unexpected between rounds, I'll come at him whipping my blade and guiding it by flows of air to lash at his neck while I draw the destruction wand and channel all the heat from the surroundings into it, into a thin line of liquid fire, aiming at his center of mass. I'll use firecrafting to move as much heat as possible to be close enough to me for the magic to lap up as a power source.

His body language indicates that he is happy to keep fighting you. Although there is a pause long enough for you to get your question in.

He grins wildly.
"That is our future Battlefield. It is the part of Magnus's soul that he summons to do battle in. An Indestructible plane of iron that he can unleash Our full might within."

Once he is ready to restart you make your move. You feint with your sword and score a light cut across his neck that doesn't draw blood. But you pull out the destruction wand and will the heat in the area into a stream of fire. You chill yourself and everything in the area but unleash a thin stream of liquid fire. You hit him with it an a large section of his chest turns red hot before the stream disappears.

You feel tired and cold from moving the heat around with wand and will alone.

It looks like he is about to counter attack.

Concerned that I'm unlikely to be able to dodge the speed of his blows after tiring myself with the magic so much, I try to woodcraft a hole in the ship on his approach, either messing his footing enough that he stumbles enough for me to be able to dodge the slower pace, or sending him below deck for a moment, giving me time to catch my breath, recover my sword and stash my wand.

You open a hole in front of him and he falls in. You stash the wand and ready your sword and somewhat recover from your magic. He's down there for about fifteen seconds before he jumps out and lands in front of you.

"Clever Mike! You actually fight with your brain. Keep it up and you will do well."

At this point Magnus literally appears from nowhere and punches Augus in the face.

"Ah. You are finally up Progenitor. But that was rude interrupting my fight with Mike!"

Augus swings at Magnus and Mangus parries the punch. But Something very Weird is happening. Space seems to be bending so that the punch is redirected at Augus.

Then Enraged Mechanical spiders come out of nowhere and fixing all that is wrong with reality. They tear Magnus and Augus apart in ways that hurt your brain to even attempt to comprehend.

Then they turn to you and rip you apart.
