The Legend of Burn
"Well, I suppose that is how they were there." Chang shrugs. "Here, the Yama Kings are powerful, but they can be beaten by mortals. Two things tips the scales in the favor of the mortal against a spirit. One, a pure heart or spirit. It does not matter what the heart is pure in, be it virtue, evil, determination or what may have you. It is a savage force multiplier."
"Two, and this one is a little different. The treaty the Shinma and the Yokai signed generally makes any weapon more sophisticated than a Chinese repeating crossbow far less effective against themselves or other of a martial art inclination." Chang gave a sigh at this point. "This part is so stupid. If the Shinma wanted us to stand for ourselves, why take mankind's greatest strength from them? I am not privy to all of the treaty terms, but I have most of it, I think. That's just one of the stranger articles in the treaty."
"It works like this: if you walk into a gunfight with your fists, you will probably die. But! If they start a fight with a gun, and you have your fists, you will probably win. As long as you give that man with the firearm proper respect, you will, in all likelihood, live."
He smiled. "I have drifted, like a log in a river. When you get sixty-eight, you let me know how your concentration is. Shinma-spawn...sounds right. You appear to a spirit what an Akuma appears to you, a fusion between man and spirit."
"Okami are animal spirits, charged with guarding the Earth. They are usually assigned a sacred spot, and told 'don't let anything mess it up. There are two that I know of still here in Rime City, Mother-of-Flocks and the Rat. The first is a recluse, the second...well, don't go into the sewers unless you have a very good reason. He doesn't like intruders, which is everyone not himself or a maintenance worker. Still, he has fought the demons for some time, so if you need advice on them, and I don't have the answer, he would."
"Ryu are just what their name implies: dragons. There are five of them, and they hold up the pillars of existence itself. Fire, Wind, Water, Metal and Wood. Their bloodline has intermingled with humanity's and created the Ryuujin, who are usually ghost hunters but will often branch off into whatever they choose. They are usually masters of an element."
Chang seems to be turning an idea over in his mind. "They did not find your monster's body, did they?"
