Re: Misty Menaces

OOC: Time for some GE rolls...

The day is cloudless and bright, and so when a nearby pub sends forth a nostril note of corned beef and cabbage, you find yourself walking that way to the dim peacefulness before realizing you'd done it.  Shrugging, you decide to listen to your body's request for quiet, shade, and two Reuben sandwhiches with a side of onion rings in the Wolfhead, which is appropriately decorated with a snarling head.

The newspaper says that the Father at Our Lady of Sorrows had died.  There is some long-winded editorializing about how vigilantism like that of the Martians or the Steel Baronet is not helpful, and people should leave things to the police.  There is a write up about the field hockey girls who you smashed.

You have to wait an hour in line to pay the ticket as the main office has had a water leak, and the frustrated staffers are trying to run things from memory in adjunct space suited for three with sixteen workers.  But it gets done. This is in the police station, and as you leave, you feel a heavy gaze on you.

You turn and look, and see a huge man in a suit and tie putting his arm on the shoulder of a smaller, younger man in way that seems unfriendly.  The younger guy has a cop uniform on.  The big guy has a decidedly cruel look to him, and he's stopped what he's doing to stare puzzled at you.

I don't pay the big guy any attention.  I'm not doing anything wrong, but if I look as if I am, all these guys will descend on me like gym rats on a salad bar.  Looking as you belong helps to make you less noticeable.  I make my way towards the exit.

You walk out, the skin of your back crawling all the way, and exit into the bright, and very welcome sunshine.  Its only when you're two blocks away that you finally are able to relax under your calm demeanor.

I headed got the car and headed over to the Explorer's Club.  I drove sedately, having no desire to ever get another traffic ticket and the need to go pay it.  I had a pair of boots to pick up.  I also needed to get a pair of the largest equipment bags they had in stock.  I was accumulating a lot more stuff than would fit into my pack.  I needed a place to store it as I moved between safehouses.

Re: Misty Menaces

The drive is calm, and the boots are fine.  A new hire fumbles thru things, but you eventually get the two biggest bags, Royal Army duffel bags, designed to carry eighty pounds each of military gear.

You hear some discussion as you shop in the Explorer's Club about your attacks.  Its focused on the tactics used, and other ways that things might be done with various arguments about weapons and plans being raised and shot down by others.  Some of it strikes you as silly, and others sounds like the professional thoughts of trained killers of large animals.

Outside the sun is bright.

I listened to their suggestions.  I decided to add one of my own.  "I hope you don't mind my asking and you don't have to answer.  I'm only in town for a little while, but I was wondering something.  If these Martini people are so reviled and you have all these skills and abilities, why haven't you followed the example of these people who are trying to free Philly from the grasp of a crime family?  I mean...  why haven't you started helping to take back your city?"

In reply to Misty (msg # 373):

There is a startled pause and then nine people are looking at you with blank faces and staring eyes.  Suddenly, you're sure at least a few of them are the killers they say they are.  One just shrugs and looks bored, and another looks away, but not as if ashamed.  A couple show signs of curiousity, but for a good minute no one says a word. A few do look embarrassed, but they are not the scary ones.

And then one of the oldest laughs, and says 'We'll just get right on that, young lady."  But the laugh and good humor seems obviously false to you.  Something happened, but you're not sure what, and this group has good poker faces when they want too.

And then they start talking about something else entirely.

I'm not sure what just happened, but I do know that I've overstayed my welcome here.  I took my new boots and my two equipment bags from the Royal Army out to my borrowed vehicle.

I made a leisurely and circuitous route through Philly checking for tails.  I stopped once for fuel to see if any other vehicles stopped with me.  I took a little extra time to get an order of fish and chips to go.  When I felt it was safe, I headed back to the lawyer's office.  I had to gear up for a run tonight on another Martini operation.  I gave them a night off.  Now, it was time to bring down the house, in this case, one of ill repute.

Re: Misty Menaces

No one is following you.

In the newspaper that is holding the chips you see a full page add advertising for a 'Tough Man Competition.' with a prize of five thousand pounds.  Its sponsored by among other groups, the Police Department.

You get back to the office, fingers greasy, stomach full, and clean off, and load up for causing Trouble.

You flip on the news, and your recent attacks are covered.  Most of the news analysts seem to believe that you are a 25-35 year old ex-elite soldier who suffered a loss, while the rest cling to the theory that you are an 'outatowner' hired by the Yakuza to weaken the Martinis prior to a gang war.

There is a debate at a college between the Police Captain and a professor.  The captain seems drained, and a bit listless, and formulaic.  The professor is arguing that all men have the right to justice, and it is delegated to gov'ts, and if the gov't fails to do its job, the right reverts back to the people.  Thus 'this vigilante's actions are fully moral and justified.'

There is also video of vandalism to the Martini Mansion wall.  Someone in full leather drove by on a motorcycle, tossed off a dozen spray cans.  Someone else potshotted them with a pellet rifle, and the resulting 'explosion' left bright red splotches all over the front wall.
"The symbolism of blood on the wall for the Martinis is obvious." Said a news reader.

And after that, it turns to your favorite field hockey team.  It seems one of them got suspended from three games for knocking several teeth out of a referee's mouth.

Re: Misty Menaces

I smiled as I watched the news while getting my gear ready for tonight.  People were paying attention.  My strikes were having an effect on Philly and its people.  The people were learning that the Martinis were not invulnerable.  The Martini family was learning that they were not at the top of the food chain any more.  I guess it's about time for another session of night school.

Tonight's run wasn't going to be a soft probe looking for information.  I needed to hurt the Martinis again.  But with a house full of women and their customers, a pure combat run wasn't going to work.  But I had an idea...  Maybe...

I hadn't dressed for the night's activities yet.  I headed out to find a pay phone and my favorite newsman.

"Hello." He snaps out.
You reply, and his tone softens.
"Ah."  You hear some moving about, perhaps some paper shuffling.  A...'Jones, I'll talk to you later. Yeah, put me down for five. Bye.'
A little catch of breath.
"Ok, I'm good. You've got...ah, how can I help you?"

Finally, he gets control of himself.

"Oh, I'd pay good money to do this.  We can get some very good shots, especially if I rig up a pair of extra floods to hit the area.  Oh, this is going to be sweet."  He chortles, starting to laugh again.

Re: Misty Menaces

I couldn't help but laugh.  "Isn't that enough for one night?"  Maybe it was and maybe it wasn't.  Depending on what happens, another Martini enterprise might be going up in smoke.  "I'll call you when I need help on the next project, if you're still interested, of course."

I had a bit of shopping to do before tonight.  I needed some way of locking or securing the secondary exits to the place.  I could epoxy the locked door locks to keep them closed.  I could also buy some heavy duty bicycle locks to secure double doors.  Maybe I'd need metallic wedges to use as doorstops.  Without knowing what there was there for exits, I'll just have to pick up a couple of everything, just in case.

It took more time than I wanted buying one thing here and another thing there, but I didn't want anyone to remember a woman purchasing all of those things at one time with them being used for Martini runs.  Still, I had what I needed.  I headed back to the lawyer's office to get ready for tonight.

"Um, yeah."

And more enthusiastically.  "Please. Please do."

As you're shopping, you hear about a Martini being shot from some chatting guy cashiers...

....Only way they know who it is is from his wallet....
....what? why?...
....his head exploded.  Even his teeth.  My uncle, the cop said, the shooter used an elephant rifle round....
....couldn't happen to a nicer set of scum, if you ask me....

Later, you're at your lawyer office, and night is falling.  Its a clear, cool night with a half moon and good visibility.

Re: Misty Menaces

It took a lot longer than I had wanted, but I was finally ready for tonight's run.  I wore my black and blue superhero armor and my new black crosstrainers because it would hide my identity as well as offer some protection from any hostile reactions from the Martini Mob.  Saxby's would have a lot of civilians around, so shooting everyone and letting their Gods sort them out wasn't much of an option.  I would need to keep my body count down as much as possible, even though everyone in the building was committing unlawful acts.

My constant companion, the Glock rode under my left arm, as it always did.  The MP-7 rode in it's usual place on my right hip.  The local suppressed pistol and it's two spare mags rode on my left hip.  The blaster went into it's usual spot behind my right hip.  With the stunwand on my left thigh and the Ceres artifact on my right thigh, I was almost ready for the run.  I only had room on my belt for pouches to hold three smoke and one high explosive grenades.  Those would have to be enough.

As a precaution, the Ceres note was again taped to the inside of my suit over my heart.  I had grabbed the black pack with the door sealing gear and was about to head out when I remembered something that I needed from my backpack.  I had been carrying this around for a while.  I dug the Suppressor for the MP-7 out of the bag.  Normally, I didn't care how much noise I made, but tonight would be a special case.  I threaded the suppressor on the barrel of the holstered chattergun.

Now I was ready to go.  I snagged my multivisor and the black pack, put on my trenchcoar and fedora, and drove carefully to Saxby's.  I parked a couple of blocks away on a sidestreet and started walking toward tonight's target.

Re: Misty Menaces

You set out, and are getting close to Saxby's with a limo filled with laughing, drunk idiots passes you. You're pretty sure they're going to Saxby's.  They turn left, and you continue on.

Later, you're driving toward Saxby's, and you turn right because it seems the thing to do, and you're driving back around, and you note that you're needing more gas as you've been driving for a couple hours, so you get gas.

You get back in the car, but traffic on the road seems thick, so you go the wrong way hoping to get turned back around, and then a while later, you realize your mind drifted, and the only thing that got you out of it was seeing that limo with the idiots leaving, all of them looking much more drunk than before.

Its still night, but you've been driving for three hours looking for Saxby's, and part of your mind keeps wanting to drift off....oh, wait, its been three and a half hours, and....
