Oak and the Onion

In reply to Oak (msg # 1):

Spinning, giggling, dwerfing, you pelt down a rollercoaster track chasing a Robot Mouse chasing the coaster...

And you're sitting up, with your eyes running, and nose stuffed, and the smell of onion heavy in the air.  Beneath you is a slick and flat, white colored surface with long lines running to the near horizon that are two yards apart, and go in parallel lines far to the left and right.

In the sky above are white dots larger than stars.

:: Ring, are you online?  Please acknowledge.  If so, begin monitoring and recording.  Summarize contents of any available transmissions. ::

:: Are you awake yet, dear daughter? ::

I examine the white colored surface to see if it is in fact made of onion.

Then I experimentally attempt to use my clairvoyant senses to get an aerial view of my surroundings...

#119 doesn't either.  You feel as if she was shocked by the versing experience.

You feel a sense of peace as you pray.

Tastes like onion...

Looking about you from above, you spot the curve of the onion.  Its far off, but this onion must be far smaller than the Earth.  Also, you see a worm with its pincered face sticking out of the onion.  Its twenty feet wide across the face. You spot several holes in the onion surface.

I continue to use my clairvoyance to get an idea of the environment surrounding the onion...

It is floating in space.  It has growth green bits above, and tendrils below, and it appears to be less than five hundred and more than fifty miles across.  Perspective is hard to gauge.

Below it, you see an enormous celery stalk.

You hear a fluttering buzz, which you should not be hearing as it seems to be coming from near your pschyic viewpoint.

You feel three Scriff vectors.

Something is fluttering toward you against the blackness of space.  You can see tiny bits of shadow, which hurt your head as you try to put them into a shape.

And then it comes closer.  It looks like a man sized cross between a wasp and a dragonfly, but somehow, you know its not that shape.  Its true shape is something that your mind can't understand.

You're aware that it doesn't exist physically, but only pschyically.

I pray for healing, and for wisdom regarding whether I should pursue or avoid further contact with such entities.

If I still feel afflicted, then I settle down to try to sleep it off.

When I awaken, I gently try to probe my own memory using Perfect Memory, in order to recall what is currently blank.

If I am still in pain, I rest more, then try again.  Lather, rinse, repeat, unless something else happens or I am psi-capable once again.

The healing causes the pain to retreat, but the pain is still there.  After sleeping a bit, you wake, and feel your abilities are back, and the pain is gone.  Gently probing the memory brings back the pain, but only for an hour.

You feel a vibration through the onion peel ground.  Looking about, you see a seventy foot long, twenty feet wide worm with many hairs heading your way at about ten miles per hour.

Stop. Food. Stop. A voice enters your mind, which since it hurts already, does not feel good at all.  You can feel it trying to compel you, and when that fails, you can feel it try to eat away at your willpower to resist.

It hits the shield, and bounces off.  Infuriated, it gathers itself again, and really lunges, throws its body up in the air, and down on you with its mouth turned toward you.

Your shield breaks.

The saber flashes twice, and then you're in its mouth, still conscious, but battered.  The saber was knocked out of  your hand.  You're not sure where it is.  You can smell giant worm guts and burnt worm guts.

OOC: I am wearing protective armor that appears to be normal clothing.  Are we assuming that clothing I may be wearing on top of that protective armor (such as a jacket) is on fire, or that the protective armor itself is on fire?  :o

I pray as I continue to pat out the flames, and inwardly sigh as I fall down the tunnel.  Getting back to the worm carcass is going to be a pain.

A part of my brain recalls the various articles and speculative fiction I have read regarding wormhole travel, and compares it to the current reality.

I check for scriff vectors (both beings and belongings) as I go...

The outer clothing is on fire, but you have finished putting it out.

Your saber, and another vector changes.  And the tunnel begins to veer, and soon you're tumbling head over heels down the gradually increasing slope.  Thinking better of this, you work to right yourself, and skid down the slope in your Kinetic Field bubble, a little shaken up, and with holes in your outer shirt, but otherwise fine.

You've fallen at least several hundred yards.  The tunnel continues on into the onion.  The floor feels mulchy?? Wet, but kind of stiff, but like you could punch your fist into it a short distance.

OOC: Somehow I put Jeff's response in the PM's as a new message to Glantri.  Help me, Obi-wan.

I pause to give thanks for deliverance.

Assuming that I am now stationary and feeling the floor, I check again for scriff vectors to see if the vector changes were merely a result of my own motion, or if they were because the beings and belongings were also in motion.

Then I assess the feasibility of climbing back toward my light saber.

Finally, I gently probe my memory once again, looking for clues about the blank spot from my encounter with the psionic entity...

OOC: What do I remember about the blankness?

I pray for healing after the headache and nosebleed.

Then I ponder my options.

: Hmmm.  Psi is still painful.  Ring is offline.  I can feel prayers answered.  And... I still have two feet...:

I start to climb... and as I do, my thoughts drift back over the many verses my path has taken me through thus far.

In some ways, my current surroundings remind me of Georg's mind, or of the shared Dream world of Heartwar.

Yet the way I feel prayers answered reminds me of my very first verse, my rather brief stay in Haston, where music also had such a powerful effect.

So it is that as I climb, seeking the top of this wormhole, I begin to sing...

"I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I’m onward bound,
'Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.'

Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith, on Heaven’s tableland,
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise and fears dismay;
Though some may dwell where those abound,
My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.

Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith, on Heaven’s tableland,
A higher plane than I have found;
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground..."

No one knew He had arrived
Things continued as they had been
While a new born softly cried.
But the heavens wrapped in wonder
Knew the meaning of His birth
In the weakness of a baby
They knew God had come to earth.

As His mother held him closely,
It was hard to understand
That this baby not yet speaking
Was the Word of God to man.
He would tell them of His kingdom,
But their hearts would not believe
They would hate Him and in anger
They would nail Him to a tree.

But the sadness would be broken
As the song of life arose
And the First born of creation
Would ascend and take his throne.
He had left it to redeem us,
But before His life began
He knew He´d come back not as a baby
But as The Lord of ev´ry man.

Hear the angels as they´re singing
On the morning of His birth
But how much greater will our song be
When He comes again to earth
When He comes again

Hear the angels as they´re singing
On the morning of His birth
But how much greater will our song be
When He comes again to Earth
When He comes to rule the Earth!
When He comes back, When He comes back
To rule the Earth!" ::

Oak and the Onion

In reply to Oak (msg # 51):

You gather the energy, focus your mind and imagine as clearly as possible the destination, and then reach.  Space twists in your mental fingers, trying to break free, but then the link is formed, and with a sudden snap, you're there.

Twenty feet away, the reptilan verser is standing across a campfire at which cooks some translucent mass.  In his left claw, he holds a flaming stick from the campfire, and in his right hand his talons are unsheathed.

He is breathing heavily, leaning over the fire. He is staring directly at you with his large, yellow edged eyes.

He looks a bit vague for a second, as he's searching his mind.

"Just call me Gardener." He pauses.  "I don't remember my first name."  He says softly.

And he's off to the races.  While he makes three salads for you, he tells you how to grow, and then shifts to details about the blackberries he is crushing to make a coconut milk shake.  While he puts that in a mini-freezer he retrieves from inside, he continues on telling you how he got the Westerkind Tomatoes from the King of Maricep.

Continuing at full speed, he explains how to make bananas grow, which is helped by the Vitarays that the Center generates.  Its a many step process with many tricky steps.

A blackberry shake is met with a tomato cucumber mayo salad.  Fresh greens that have been beaten with a hammer join it, and these are mixed with lime juice.

"Lots of protein in Lot AB Greens.  Genetically engineered, but they had to resist the wolves on that planet so the gengineers made them tough.  So, you have to beat them a lot to get to the point where you can eat them."

A mango tea, and a banana, orange, blueberry fruit salad is the second course.

A handful of black walnuts, smashed up by the same hammer used for the greens, gets you fat, he tells you. They are indeed very greasy nuts, more so than ones you've known before.  Sliced kiwifruit cuts the fat when it gets a bit much.

"We'll have strawberries and Wunsat cream later." He says.  He's been talking almost non-stop for the last hour on gardening, jumping from topic to topic.  He makes himself some tea with a laser cooking device he retrieves from inside his house.

"Don't really care."

"Yes, more than one."

He thinks, and then shakes his head.

"Unless you have some plants from another verse?"

"I am sorry, I do not have any plants from other verses."

"Thank you so much for your kindness and hospitality, friend Gardener.  May the Lord bless you and keep you."

I thankfully take whatever supplies he offers to help me start my garden, and take my leave.

If he does give me the dirt and worms and plants, then I check out the locations he suggests, and start setting up the garden with the instructions he gave me.

If not, or after gardening and resting if he does, then I start triangulating and tracking down the source of the third scriff vector...

Your garden is five by five feet.  The outer edge is transformers which when mulched turn the onion into something sort of like soil.  The next ring in goes the rest of the way to turn it into actual soil.  Inside that is four more rings, one in rotation.

It takes you a bit of math, but you get it locked down, and send out your mind.  Its on one of the white points in the sky, which is probably another onion.  The distance is 113, 450 ish miles from you.

You jump your view to the other Onion.  And then you begin to search.  Its not going well, but you plug on, getting lost a couple times.  Without proper landmarks, its hard to remember if you've searched an area or not.

And then pop, you're back.

Another try, and you're back, and you spot a dead worm being eaten, if thats the word by something you can't see.

Going on a bit further, you hear C-R-RRAAAAKK.  And heading in that direction, you see another dead worm, but this looks fresh.  A thousand yards away, you see a man with a rifle getting up.

Getting closer, you see the rifle is a good six feet long, and dark red metal.  He doesn't seem to notice you.  He puts his rifle crosswise on his back, looks about, and then begins to jog toward the worm.

The link is established, and you're now an Intermind server.

The two quickly find a rapport around both being hunters.  It turns out that much of the Reptilan's high tech civ was also hunter-gatherer.  They compare knife-fighting to talon-fighting techniques.

Blake pulls out a mylar wrap which he arranges around the Reptilan to bounce back the fire's heat which makes the alien far more warmer.  Soon, the Reptilan is again functional, and is cooking slimebeast for all three.

And then you see a small flexible sided box thing roll into the clearing.  Another rolls in, and then another.  They bump into each other, and hang on.  More come, in larger numbers.  Soon there are twenty.

And you realize that they're not friends of E Pluribus Unum, which is a concept name it snatched from your brain, but it is a singular mind of sorts.

It, for it has no gender, can change your pheromones so you smell bad or toxic to the others.  It will also gift you a mind sword, left from some other time.

The Reptilan is willing but grumpy about being coerced.  Blake shrugs and says 'As long as I get paid'.

:: What kind of payment do you wish from them, friend Blake? ::

:: Friends of the E Pluribus Unum, can you teach us the skill of pheromone changing?  If we are separated from you, and the battle rages long, we may need this ability ourselves. ::

:: Where do these Mindeaters roam?  How may they be overcome? ::

In reply to Oak (msg # 145):

::Good point.  How about free passage through their lands, and freedom to hunt anything not them in their lands.::

::Accepted:: Is the reply.

::These two do not have strong enough minds, but you, with that bit put in your mind, might.  Activate it.::

You see that they come from the nearer tunnel after digging in to it, and from several other tunnels.  E Pluribus Unum has won against them before with swarm attacks but many parts of it died.

I pray, and attempt to activate it.

:: When you swarm attacked it, how exactly did you attack?  Physically?  Psionically?  What kind of attack was it vulnerable to? ::

In reply to Oak (msg # 147):

You get a picture of them trying to eat it.

Your chip activates, and you can feel brilliance flare through you. Barbarian invasions typically occur from forced migrations occurs to you.

And then you feel the Ogre and E Pluribus Unum trying to use the same cycles, no stop, you have time to shout, but you're just faster than they are, and the snowball has started rolling.

Your pheromones have changed.

Reptilan lunges toward you. He tumbles past you.

Blake is fumbling for his rifle.  He's looking at  you with his eyes glazed.  He's drooling.

"Steak. Juicy, medium rare, prime rib.  Oh yeah."

In reply to Oak (msg # 149):

Blake pauses, looking confused, but there's still hunger in his manner.  You try to teleport, but no, and then you feel fire run up your back.  Lines of fire and pain as the Reptilan opens up your back with its claws, and it vaults over you, trying to knock you down.  You stagger forward a half-step but keep your feet.

Reptilan's right talons and fingers are coated red up to his first knuckles.  This brings new meaning to 'My back hurts'.

I pray, and belatedly press the button to manually activate the benevolent empathic field.

Blake stares into space.  The Reptilan leaps at you, and rips open your shoulder as you duck.  He comes at you again, but slips in your blood.

: Dearest LORD, if you would have me remain here to serve you, please clear their minds, and preserve me from attack.  And if you would have me serve you elsewhere in the multiverse, Thy will be done... :

I move back as I even more belatedly press the button on my kinetic field device, attempting to surround myself in a protective bubble...

Re: Oak and the Onion

In reply to Oak (msg # 153):

The Reptilan leaps again, hits the field, and slows.  And then you see energy running down his arms, and grounding with sparks that smell of ozone and burnt onion in the ground.  And then your field pops.  You remember he was from an advanced civilization.

Shunk.
