Re: Oak and the Onion

In reply to Oak (msg # 79):

You're better in a bit.

You're not really sure what you saw, it was all so fast.  Mostly empty space.  Some dots as well were there.

Your view expands to that of the Onion.  And then you shift backwards.  The Celery stalk at the base of the Onion floats away.  Eventually you see a Giant Carrot swim into view.  And a good ways past, you stop, refocus and go further.  Another Onion swings by and keeps going.

And you've gone back some distance.

You refocus, and you're back in your body.  That last attempt to view back failed.

Re: Oak and the Onion

I check again for scriff vectors.

I previously sensed three of them, and I have met one already.

Therefore, I now start searching for the sources of the other scriff vectors.

I walk, continuing to check vector directions, triangluating to discern the next closest vector.  Then I use clairvoyance to look for it...

In reply to Oak (msg # 81):

The first set of calcs is thrown out of your head when the Ogre expands a bit.  After checking, the Ogre is still processing, but slowly getting there.

You do the math again, and find the line you want, about three hundred miles away. Weakly, you reach out, and push on, and gradually pick up speed.

You come to a garden on the surface of the Onion.  Its about twenty acres, and looking at it, you see hundreds of extremely lush fruits, and even some dark soil in it.

A young, dark-haired man looks up at your hovering point of view.

"Welcome to my garden, sir. Its a little small, and weak, but its an interesting challenge managing the growth of plants in the Vitarays, and without good soil.  You know, I considered going completely hydroponic when I got here, but, no, I think this could work.  Its never going to be great..."

OOC: What type of feeling?

-=-

I attempt to teleport to him in his garden.

Assuming that I am successful... I nod in friendly greeting.

"Thank you very much for your kindness.  What kind of fruit do you have?"

In reply to Oak (msg # 85):

OOC: Uncertain, a presence.

You teleport.  He chats, checking various plants as he walks by them, leading you to a small vine-covered house in the midst of the garden.  In front of it is an outdoor table and chairs.

"Oh, mangoes, bananas, blueberries, boysenberries, blackberries, bumblbe, tomatoes of a dozen types, limes, lemons, lotok, variget, sweet mais, oranges, honeysuckle, strawberries, kiwifruit, avocado, papaya, coconut, persimmon, dates, gooseberry, grape, coconut, Yaling's fruit, and horned melon."

He looks a bit embarrassed.

"Those are the only ones that are ripe now."

"Well met, kind sir.  Please, what is your name?"

My eyes widen in pleasure as I go on the tour, and as he goes through his list.

"Wow.  This is amazing work you have done.  However did you do this in such conditions?"

"I am most attracted to the bananas, oranges, kiwifruit, strawberries, mangoes, blueberries, and blackberries... but I suppose I should get more protein and fat.  What do you recommend for a healthy meal?"

Re: Oak and the Onion

In reply to Oak (msg # 87):

He looks a bit vague for a second, as he's searching his mind.

"Just call me Gardener." He pauses.  "I don't remember my first name."  He says softly.

And he's off to the races.  While he makes three salads for you, he tells you how to grow, and then shifts to details about the blackberries he is crushing to make a coconut milk shake.  While he puts that in a mini-freezer he retrieves from inside, he continues on telling you how he got the Westerkind Tomatoes from the King of Maricep.

Continuing at full speed, he explains how to make bananas grow, which is helped by the Vitarays that the Center generates.  Its a many step process with many tricky steps.

A blackberry shake is met with a tomato cucumber mayo salad.  Fresh greens that have been beaten with a hammer join it, and these are mixed with lime juice.

"Lots of protein in Lot AB Greens.  Genetically engineered, but they had to resist the wolves on that planet so the gengineers made them tough.  So, you have to beat them a lot to get to the point where you can eat them."

A mango tea, and a banana, orange, blueberry fruit salad is the second course.

A handful of black walnuts, smashed up by the same hammer used for the greens, gets you fat, he tells you. They are indeed very greasy nuts, more so than ones you've known before.  Sliced kiwifruit cuts the fat when it gets a bit much.

"We'll have strawberries and Wunsat cream later." He says.  He's been talking almost non-stop for the last hour on gardening, jumping from topic to topic.  He makes himself some tea with a laser cooking device he retrieves from inside his house.

Re: Oak and the Onion

I listen with great interest as he teaches me about gardening.  I love plants, and have always wanted to learn more about them, and how to cultivate them.

My eyes widen still further as I see the nuts and veggies, and I smile approvingly at the lime juice addition.

I usually tend to eat in moderation, unless the food is exceptional... and this food is exceptional.  I also haven't eaten much since arriving here.  So I tuck in, and eat with gusto.

I gratefully sip my mango tea as the current eating winds down.  It has been a long time since I have eaten such an enjoyable meal.

"You have a great wealth of experience, friend Gardener. Do you have any knowledge of medical herbary?   I have long desired to know more about gardening.  How would you advise a novice to get started in learning how to make a garden like this?"

=====+@1 to Gardening skill (3@8 teacher helps).

===="Got to keep my guests healthy."

====Its at the peak of freshness with no rot, just picked.  You probably know the difference between a juicy, garden grown tomato, and one bought at a grocery store midwinter.  Its better than the first.

I gratefully sip my mango tea as the current eating winds down.  It has been a long time since I have eaten such an enjoyable meal.

"You have a great wealth of experience, friend Gardener. Do you have any knowledge of medical herbary?

====="Well yes.  I started because my toes ache in cold weather, and from there I went on to study quite a bit."  And he's off to the races again.  Twenty minutes later you're able to get in a word.

I have long desired to know more about gardening.  How would you advise a novice to get started in learning how to make a garden like this?"

===="Hmmmm. Good question. I could give you a wagon load of dirt, some worms that eat the onion, a few tranformative plants, and a dozen others." And another twenty minutes as he explains his ideas. "Now, this is the best for here, but this Onion is actually a very hard place to grow things.  I could give you another setup that would work better other more normal places."

Re: Oak and the Onion

I listen to his teaching with great interest.  I know an expert when I see one... and in this case, I can literally taste it.

"Friend Gardener, you have a wealth of knowledge, far more than I will properly absorb in one sitting."

"Would you consider taking on an apprentice?"

"Some folks prefer more solitude as they enjoy their garden, and I do not wish to intrude."

"However, if you would value another pair of hands, and a pair of eyes and ears to gladly learn from your expertise, I would be privileged to serve..."

"Well, its a small bubble universe with the life-giving energy provided by Vitarays from the Centerpoint, and the light provided by a circular belt of fluorescent fungi.  Most of the creatures and things seem to be insectoid and vegetable.

I've heard speculation that some of the universes of the multiverse were practise universes for their designers.  I don't know, its not my thing."

"What are Vitarays?  If they provide life-giving energy apart from light, does that mean that we don't actually need to eat or sleep in this place?"

"What do you know of the sentients in this place?  I have detected three scriff vectors.  The first was a Reptilan, the second was you, and I still have not located the third.  And I have also encountered a somewhat chaotic sentient..."

In reply to Oak (msg # 95):

"I require sleep for memory resorting, and recovery, but less than other places." He talks on further, and it seems as if Vitarays supplement but do not wholly take care of such needs.

He has not checked out the other versers.  He doesn't leave his garden.

He's aware of the 'Green Star' and its Mindwasps, but they leave him alone after he told them too.

He tells you that there is a local linkable sentient type, and an amnesiac type.  He doesn't go into detail, and you realize its because he doesn't remember.  His focus is on gardening, and everything else gets about ten percent of his attention.  You get a sense that he's been gardening for a long time.

"How often do you need to eat in this place, with the Vitarays to supplement?"

"Is the Centerpoint sentient?  Is the Green Star sentient?"

"Has anyone else come to visit you in your garden?"

"Thank you very much for your kind offer of dirt and worms and plants.  Where do you recommend I try to start my own garden?"

"I will continue to explore this place.  Since you do not leave your garden, is there anything that you need that I should be on the lookout for?  Is there any way that I can be of help to you?"

He gives you several locations.

He thinks, and then shakes his head.

"Unless you have some plants from another verse?"

He's clearly ran out of sociability.

"I am sorry, I do not have any plants from other verses."

"Thank you so much for your kindness and hospitality, friend Gardener.  May the Lord bless you and keep you."

I thankfully take whatever supplies he offers to help me start my garden, and take my leave.

If he does give me the dirt and worms and plants, then I check out the locations he suggests, and start setting up the garden with the instructions he gave me.

If not, or after gardening and resting if he does, then I start triangulating and tracking down the source of the third scriff vector...

In reply to Oak (msg # 99):

Your garden is five by five feet.  The outer edge is transformers which when mulched turn the onion into something sort of like soil.  The next ring in goes the rest of the way to turn it into actual soil.  Inside that is four more rings, one in rotation.

It takes you a bit of math, but you get it locked down, and send out your mind.  Its on one of the white points in the sky, which is probably another onion.  The distance is 113, 450 ish miles from you.

I give thanks for my garden, and pray for wisdom regarding pursuing the third scriff vector.

If I don't get any nudges to refrain, then I move my clairvoyant viewpoint to the white point in the sky, and search the distant onion for the third scriff vector source...

"Be careful." is the nudge.  And you send your viewpoint out, and about halfway there, you meet another of the chaotic things.  It seems to have different images, but still a mess.  Whether its the same creature, if it is a creature, or another one is impossible to say.  Its trying to close with you.

In reply to Oak (msg # 103):

You jump your view to the other Onion.  And then you begin to search.  Its not going well, but you plug on, getting lost a couple times.  Without proper landmarks, its hard to remember if you've searched an area or not.

And then pop, you're back.

Another try, and you're back, and you spot a dead worm being eaten, if thats the word by something you can't see.

Going on a bit further, you hear C-R-RRAAAAKK.  And heading in that direction, you see another dead worm, but this looks fresh.  A thousand yards away, you see a man with a rifle getting up.

Getting closer, you see the rifle is a good six feet long, and dark red metal.  He doesn't seem to notice you.  He puts his rifle crosswise on his back, looks about, and then begins to jog toward the worm.
