Re: Oak Oak

In reply to Oak (msg # 27):

Even as you see a long black metal spear fly toward you through the spaces between the branches, the gnome shifts to a giant sea eagle.  It leaps forward, catches you in its talons, and launches outward into outer space.

The cold is horrifying, and the air storms out of your lungs. To your right, a great distance off you can see the tip of the Tree.  To your left, you see no end. The eagles flips in space, and dives back down into the air-filled branches.

"We are safe now, but turn off your brain chip unless you want to meet Gungir again.  Now my favor, and in addition, another favor for healing you...if you want such."  You feel as if you'd gargled razor blades, and all  your exposed skin is blue, and turning red.  It turns into a monkey.

He pats you on the head, and you feel much better.

"Gungir.  Gungir keeps me and my brethren down.  The Aesir have their leader, so-called Odin, and he has a technological suppression field generator run by his AI, Gungir, in that spear of his.  I want it.  Or if I can't have it. I want you to break it.  That's my favor."

I take in this information thoughtfully.

"There is much that I need to understand.  What factions of note are there in this universe, and what are their goals, and strengths, and weaknesses?  What resources do we have available to us to break Gungir's yoke?"

Re: Oak Oak

In reply to Oak (msg # 31):

"There are many factions.  Some prey on others, some trade, some exploit, some seek to avoid others.  But most are still in the Long Sleep between the Stars.  The Family, annoying snots, wake first, and they claim this Tree is theirs to tend from the Creator. Nonsense, I'd say, but I have to admit I'm more agnostic about it then I used to be.  They have no technology, not even the wheel, if you can believe it.

Then we, our kind wake. We are Transhuman.  Virtual matter, AI's, pocket fusion cells, that kind of thing.  I have to admit, that thing in your brain is pretty impressive.  My side, the Alliance of...Freedom wants to be free of the hypocritical, self-righteous Aesir, who style themselves as the Norse gods.

The Marsh are waking now.  I think they are aliens.  We trade them tree parts for information.  The Yanthak, are, I think some sort of technobio weapon, intelligent but very, very focused.  And they hate the Marsh for some reason.  They'll wake soon.

The Burazi, well they are beautiful, but never turn your back on t hem.  Not sure if they're alien....they say they are, but they have butterfly DNA.  They will wake soon."

"What powers your Transhumanity?  If it is based upon technology, then how does it evade Gungir's yoke?"

"You have healing and shapeshifting capabilities that evade Gungir's yoke.  Can you teach me to wield them if I use them for this cause?"

"Who are the allies of the Transhumans, and who are the enemies... and why?"

"Nanites, virtual matter, lots of code modules, and fusion pocket cells.  Gungir cannot influence inside me. Or my touch.   There are hardline defenses against that.  But I cannot extend my powers beyond.  You already have primitive nanite systems.  What you need to worry about is defending them because a hacked nanite system is a pure nightmare."

"We, in the Alliance tend to be individualistic.  Long-term allies are not our thing.  The Aesir have a relationship with the Family that varies from testy to outright violent.  The Aesir have two client species that will wake, but not for a while yet.  We get along with the Marsh, and the Transhuman animals, such as Ratatosk, the Great Squirrel."

In reply to Oak (msg # 35):

"I don't know where you come from, but we were part of a great civilization. Over twenty billion sentients spread from the Earth to the Moon.  And we built on each other's work.  And well, we had the Abyss Wars where we learned to make sure to keep control of our own bodies.  So now, its hardcoded into all our tech.  And Gungir was made after this, during the Twilight War, the Doom of the Gods.  If it tried to come control my body, well, there are some really, really vicious ICE that would rip it to s hreds.  So, there's that, and we all thought this was Ragnarok, but then the Tree came, and a few of us jumped on board rather than stay and watch our civ kill itself. Can you imagine a war fought with asteroids and terawatt laser cannons, antimatter, and graviton lances?  We were ripping the Earth to pieces."

"Yes, should be." He touches your Ring, and it warms on your skin.

::New Active Defense Program uploaded. It uses 22% of memory.  Do you wish to activate it?::

You do, and your Ring is now active.  You have one less memory slot in your ring for varied forms than you had due to the CPU and memory demands of the AD ICE program.

"No, I didn't do anything to it.  I'd be afraid too."

"Gungir, is an AI, sheathed in an elemental iron spear with an agrav generator.  It can function as a very durable spear, but its primary function is to enforce the Law, or will of its owner.  We know it can do a very powerful tech suppression field, and I hope that's all it can do because that's already an incredible device.  The Aesir did tend to commission some of the best devices on the planet."

"About a hundred fifty including the Aesir, the Alliance of Freedom, the Great Animals, and the one-offs.  The rest, I'm  not sure of numbers, but I don't think they'd get involved.  Not to boast..." He smiles widely.  "We're pretty powerful."

"Clever. You are clever.  The Aesir are proud, self-righteous.  You must come to them in apparent humbleness, seek their aid.  Compliment them on their greatness.  Ask to see their wonders, and when you get the chance, snatch up the spear.  Compel it to carry you to the Pool, and you will fly their faster than Thor's goat drawn chariot.  There you may break it over your knee."  He grins craftily, nodding, pleased with you.

"Fair enough.  And you have had opportunity to observe that I too am a user of technology, and that I prefer the freedom to be able to use it."

"I also tell you frankly that I do not prefer that freedom being restricted by entities styling themselves after Norse gods."

"However, we must think through the consequences."

"Unrestricted, technology was 'ripping the Earth to pieces'."

"I prefer more than living under Gungir's yoke, but I also prefer more than dying free.  How can we take action to actually live free?"

Oak:
I consider, and nod again.

"Where is the Pool?  What about it makes me able to break Gungir's yoke over my knee there?"

====The Pool is Uroarbrunner, an organic liquid AI.  Its technology is sufficient to defeat Gungir's protections if Gungir is brought to it.

"Tell me more about each Aesir aboard, and their strengths and weaknesses."

"Odin has control of Gungir.  He also is very charming, so watch yourself.  He can summon vastly superhuman strength for a bit, but it tires him.  If he tries, he can guess what you will do with computer modelling of most likely actions.

Thor has his chariot with agrav, and his goats which he can use as heat sinks that regenerate.  He needs this because his ion cannon, Mjolnir, generates a lot of heat.  He's a tremendous warrior.

Frigga, she's capable of using deep modelling for the Future, but the effort leaves her catatonic.  She's good at the healing arts.

Baldur is strange, pale, we do not understand him, and I think the other Aesir do not either.

Tyr lost his hand to the Chaos Wolf, who thankfully is not with us. No one wants an antimatter powered random action generator device wandering about. Tyr is a stone cold executioner.  His very touch kills.  He doesn't lie, unlike Odin, but he doesn't give second chances either.

The other, lesser ones, they are stronger, and much more durable than an ordinary human.  And wounds that would kill a man will simply take some time to recover.  This is why Frigga is so honored, because she can heal in seconds what might take a year to recover from."

"Suppose I am successful.  The Aesir will obviously be displeased.  If they should respond with hostile action, what resources do we have to withstand them?"

====="We have as many of the Alliance, and we have places of hiding, and if you are very clever they will not know it was you.  We will be glad to take the honor and the chase upon ourselves."

I look at our surroundings as I listen through Sight, ensuring that there are no other invisible surprises.

And, still using Sight, I look at my current companion...

====He's thirty feet tall, and stringy haired, has two heads, and wears a rough tunic with pants, but no shoes as his basic shape, but for now he's a monkey.  You see in his aura a giant beanstalk.  You also see a tongue.  You also see a flame that shape changes constantly.
