Oak Oak

Dreams of Barney the Pink Dinosaur chatting with the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park fade to the ....

....smell of oak bark, very strong, after a rain.  Gravity feels a touch weak.  The air is cool, and humid.

Opening your eyes, you see the trunk of a massive oak under foot, and all about huge branches, and tiny leaf buds.  Beyond them, you see the black of space, and the multi-colored stars.

Sitting on one of these ten foot wide branches is a squirrel almost twenty feet tall.  Its staring at you with keen eyes.

In reply to Oak (msg # 3):

You're standing on a trunk so the space idea seems more likely.

Your prayer seems rewarded with a sense of wait.

Your Ring does not reply.

:Partially.:: Ogre #119 replies.

The squirrel says something in a language you don't know, then it throws an acorn the size of a medicine ball at you.  It hits you hard, breaking several ribs, despite your armor, and knocks you down.  But before you can attack physically, it scampers off.

Ranged attacks are possible.

My relief at breathing fresh oak-scented air instead of onion-scented air is now somewhat tempered by the pain from my ribs with each new breath.

:: Dearest LORD...  Please heal me now...  I pray... ::

I manually raise my kinetic shield, in case I receive any further gifts unexpectedly.

Then I reach out with my telepathic senses toward the departing squirrel, seeking information about what it said to me, why it attacked me, and any other useful information available about our current universe...

A sense of regret accompanies your prayer. You are not healed.

Neither does your button work, let alone the kinetic field.

Reaching out with your telepathy....and brain burn.  You've got a pounding headache to  go with the broken ribs.

A few minutes later, an extremely handsome human looking pygmy walks down to you.

"Hello, I am Third Seventh." He's not speaking English, but you understand him clearly. "The Great Squirrel sent for me."

My mind grabs onto the name of this ship.  Mary Piper... just like the ship on that universe with the emeralds of power, where I served with Balsom the Panda and Kyle the Ariatte.  What strange parallels there were through the multiverse...

With that thought, I check for scriff vectors.

You detect no other scriff sources.

"Others will waken from the long sleep soon.  The Tree, it is great and the whole sharzhinka.  It grows toward Ceteris, a sun, even now.  Soon enough we will pass by, and then go between."

Efforts to understand what 'shar....' means prove difficult.

The healing arrives the slow way.  In a few minutes, your nose is clotted up.

You feel a burn, a slice inside your soul.  But despite that twinge of pain, its a good feel.  As if something that was not quite right, among many other things, inside you, was now right.  Its like you had popped a stiff back, and felt relief.

Activating your Sight, you see the Tree glowing with life.  The still tiny emerald seeds each have a Tree floating by them.  Inside one of the branches nearby is a star and a long math equation.

And walking down the Main Trunk is a line of ten glowing beetles, each a foot long.  Oddly, they are completely invisible to your normal sight.

I move onto the branch with the star, in order to allow the invisibeetles free passage down the main trunk.  I remain aware of their progress, in case they seem to be heading toward me rather than simply moving down the trunk past me.

While waiting for them to pass by, I examine the equation, so that I can reflect upon it via Perfect Memory later.

Then I pray for wisdom regarding whether or not these invisibeetles are hostile, and look for potential escape routes if needed...

Even as you see a long black metal spear fly toward you through the spaces between the branches, the gnome shifts to a giant sea eagle.  It leaps forward, catches you in its talons, and launches outward into outer space.

The cold is horrifying, and the air storms out of your lungs. To your right, a great distance off you can see the tip of the Tree.  To your left, you see no end. The eagles flips in space, and dives back down into the air-filled branches.

"We are safe now, but turn off your brain chip unless you want to meet Gungir again.  Now my favor, and in addition, another favor for healing you...if you want such."  You feel as if you'd gargled razor blades, and all  your exposed skin is blue, and turning red.  It turns into a monkey.

Nonsense, I'd say, but I have to admit I'm more agnostic about it then I used to be.  They have no technology, not even the wheel, if you can believe it.

Then we, our kind wake. We are Transhuman.  Virtual matter, AI's, pocket fusion cells, that kind of thing.  I have to admit, that thing in your brain is pretty impressive.  My side, the Alliance of...Freedom wants to be free of the hypocritical, self-righteous Aesir, who style themselves as the Norse gods.

The Marsh are waking now.  I think they are aliens.  We trade them tree parts for information.  The Yanthak, are, I think some sort of technobio weapon, intelligent but very, very focused.  And they hate the Marsh for some reason.  They'll wake soon.

Oak:
I consider, and nod again.

"Where is the Pool?  What about it makes me able to break Gungir's yoke over my knee there?"

====The Pool is Uroarbrunner, an organic liquid AI.  Its technology is sufficient to defeat Gungir's protections if Gungir is brought to it.

"Tell me more about each Aesir aboard, and their strengths and weaknesses."

"Odin has control of Gungir.  He also is very charming, so watch yourself.  He can summon vastly superhuman strength for a bit, but it tires him.  If he tries, he can guess what you will do with computer modelling of most likely actions.

Thor has his chariot with agrav, and his goats which he can use as heat sinks that regenerate.  He needs this because his ion cannon, Mjolnir, generates a lot of heat.  He's a tremendous warrior.

Frigga, she's capable of using deep modelling for the Future, but the effort leaves her catatonic.  She's good at the healing arts.

Baldur is strange, pale, we do not understand him, and I think the other Aesir do not either.

Tyr lost his hand to the Chaos Wolf, who thankfully is not with us. No one wants an antimatter powered random action generator device wandering about. Tyr is a stone cold executioner.  His very touch kills.  He doesn't lie, unlike Odin, but he doesn't give second chances either.

The other, lesser ones, they are stronger, and much more durable than an ordinary human.  And wounds that would kill a man will simply take some time to recover.  This is why Frigga is so honored, because she can heal in seconds what might take a year to recover from."

"Suppose I am successful.  The Aesir will obviously be displeased.  If they should respond with hostile action, what resources do we have to withstand them?"

====="We have as many of the Alliance, and we have places of hiding, and if you are very clever they will not know it was you.  We will be glad to take the honor and the chase upon ourselves."

I look at our surroundings as I listen through Sight, ensuring that there are no other invisible surprises.

And, still using Sight, I look at my current companion...

====He's thirty feet tall, and stringy haired, has two heads, and wears a rough tunic with pants, but no shoes as his basic shape, but for now he's a monkey.  You see in his aura a giant beanstalk.  You also see a tongue.  You also see a flame that shape changes constantly.
