OOC: You versed out.  If you liked the previous world, its inspired by Skyler Grant's 'A Futuristic Dungeon Core: Laboratory' series with Emma the more than slightly evil AI out to experiment for SCIENCE!!!!

IC:  A cackling and levitating laptop is chasing you over hill and dale, trying to attach a third arm to your back so that you'll be able to scratch your back anytime you need too.  And then you trip and go head over hills down a heel, and land on your back in a cornfield.

Its at this point, you realize its probably real.  You smell corn stalks, feel something slightly leathery with a hand, and smell warm earth under your back.  Opening your eyes, you see the corn stalks go up about two feet into a blue sky with a huge red splotch a couple fist's wide in the sky, and a yellow sun that beams down on you.

No verser senses.

You're in the middle of a twenty acre cornfield.  The corn stalks have a slight bluish edge that you're not used to but other than that, t hey are normal.  Tall hedges serve as windbreaks at the edge of the field, and you see another field with the same thing.  Beyond that, you see and hear a steam shovel scream as it chops into some trees in part of a thick forest.  Another man near it is using a flamethrower on the trees, but it does not seem to work well.

In the opposite direction is a stone tower with what looks like a cannon on the roof.

He's stopped his flamethrower as he sees you come up.

"Help? Sure. Do you know how to use a steam shovel, or dynamite, or a flame thrower?"  He looks at your hammer, and laughs.  "This ain't a Landing City grove, man.  This is The Forrest.  We got a bit nipped off, but its still fighting."

And you feel no magic.

He lights up his flamethrower again, pointing it to one particularly thick tree.  "Itz a popper. Bout to blow."  And then suddenly holes appear in the truck and a wind rushes from it, disturbing leaves, as the tree shrinks in size, and the fire goes out.  You and the man cough a bit.

"CO2. The Forrest will try to kill you.  That's why you got to take out the Spikers first, and any Wrangler Vines, and then the Poppers. You still want a job.  Its good pay, but real dangerous."

OOC) Hey Tadeusz, I hate to be a rules lawyer, but as I'm sure you're aware, there are numerous magical skills which still work in a flatline magic bias. Creating darkness and light are two which come to mind. I can check Da Rulezzz if you'd like. I just don't want to be deprived of ALL of my magic.

Psionics comes very easily.

You walk through the cornfield of young stalks, and past the farm tower with its roof cannon, and get to a road that looks like rocky cement.  Its only one lane, and as you walk on, every half-mile you spot a turn around or pass by with a wider section of road.  The road is arrow straight, but at the same time somewhat slipshod.

You come to a crossing of strips, and take the right toward some tall, thin, blue towers.  After another mile, your third, a feeling of something coming behind you presses on your mind.

Try to use psionic telescopic sight to zoom in on that. What details can I see? I'm looking specifically for places to sell gold and gems. I think I'm going to forgo working for the minute. Just live large off my savings.

Glance around, see what I see. Use telescopic vision there too.

I can fly with psionics, but I'm not sure I want to put on a show (just yet) so keep walking. Maybe if I see someone else flying....

There are elegantly curved blue crystal skyscrapers??.  Off to the side, are two purple skyscrapers, and between them is a quarter of a giant hoop, like the London Eye Ferris Wheel, but made of multi-colored and glowing crystals.  It is being constructed.

Nearly everyone you see has a weapon, or two.  At least a hatchet.  There are a lot of uniforms.

You don't see any gold sellers places.

Looking behind you down the road, you see a metal wagon with an awning, and a glowing crystal attached to the front.  A girl is holding her hand on the crystal, and a guy is driving with a crude turn bar.  Its coming your way.  And suddenly you realize that the approaching crystal is what you feel.

When you say "Uniforms" what kind? TV Repairmen or Police?

Lots of weapons. Good. I'm carrying at least four guns myself.

Its a mix, and a lot of them are not clear on which side of the line they are.

The silent, except for the rolling of the metal wheels, vehicle smoothly slides to a stop near you.  They are glad to have you join  them.  The girl wearily gets out, and climbs in back, and lays down next to two others who are sleeping.  The driver points at the crystal, after you get in front.

The vehicle is crude and bare of much comfort, but simply and solidly designed.  It has more relation to a Little Red Wagon than a modern American automobile.

Ask if any of them are willing to trade gold or gems for the local currency. Or if they know where I can get it changed. If I can avoid it, I'd rather not work this world. Just find me a nice little apartment somewhere and relax.

When you get to town, they're happy to be rid of you, and when you give the driver a diamond, he just looks at it and then takes it and tosses it on the seat beside him.  They drive off, and you have to walk several blocks to get to the four story tall building of adobe.

The first floor has a large metal sign that looks golden.

Imperial Gold and Silver Exchange.

Walking in, you see a couple people in line in front of you.  There is a long desk, and an office space behind it.  It has the feel of a gov't run operation.  No one is in any particular rush.  The waiting room chairs are bland and rusted in spots.  No one smiles.

Eventually, the two in front ofyou get done, and a weary and bored looking middle aged matron stares through you.

"Next." She says with all the warmth of three day old mac and cheese.

How much gold do I have? I would guess it's in the two digits of pounds, at least.

I get to the counter, and I say "Yes Roz, I'd like to cash these in please?"

Then ask casually "How much do you earn here in a year?"

If she's cute and dateable:

"Well Roz, I'd like to cash in 15 pounds of gold. That should give me 1050 credits, which is enough to live here for a year. Then, I'd like to take you out for a luxurious dinner at a place of your choosing."

If she's an old hag, ask her where she recommends I go for dinner.

You hear people talk about crystal forming, and another break through of the trees, and when your drink is brought out, everyone looks at you, and then one of them raises a toast.

I'm not sure if you should be using more commas or less commas, but I really like this spread either way. Stuff myself.

Ask around about purchasing a home or finding something more permanent than a hotel room. Is somebody maybe looking for a roommate? Any homes for sale? Long-term apartments? I think Magehammer might want to relax after some of the adventures he's had. He's just hoping The Great Referee in the Sky will cooperate........

You can get a barracks cot for workers on the Great Ring.

You can also rent a room in one of Home Towers.  Its an apartment.  The prices are steep even for small apartments, but you do have a lot of money.

No one shares apartments, and when you ask one fellow laughs.

Once I've got a place to stay though, I'm just going to get cable TV and some cheap furniture and plant myself in front of the TV. Eat food delivery. Not leave the house for days at a time. I've been on enough adventures. Time to rest and relax.

You see one amphitheatre is half full.  A play is on.  Others are enjoying the air at a few open parks with tables for food or just sitting.  And from up here, you get an even clearer sense of how temporary everything looks.  How quick it was flung up, and how no one really cares that the placeis in many cases poorly designed with too many dead end streets and little bits of useless land here and there.

The most relevant part of the Museum at first is the History of the Empire.

A hologram lady appears and speaks.

"Earth the Lost. A legendary paradise with peace and harmony for all.  But our ancestors left it, and went to the Stars.  And over time, much time, we forgot the way home.  The stars shifted and the stargates moved.

But then the Mindlights were created.  A new, better breed of Man.  Smarter, more in depth of feeling unlike the cloddish normals.  We unified our planet, and created the Mindlight Empire under the First Emperor.  And then we stretched out and created the Ten Systems.  And for a thousand years, there was peace.

But the Normies, in their insensate greed, strove for what they could not use.  And they battered us, and we in our mercy agreed to let them have their Empire.  And we took the Mindgate to the new planet.

But we were betrayed.  Yes, the land is livable.  But the Trees of this land are a singular organism, and in order to find space to grow, we must beat them back.  Even as the Trees plot against us.  But with your help, Noble Blooded Imperial, we shall construct a new Jumpgate, and go to a world where we can rebuild our Lost Paradise."

Interesting. They think trees are sentient and out to get them. Sounds like a collective delusion. Or maybe the trees really are out to get them....... Remember kids, it's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

I'm suddenly reminded of a joke I made up as part of a stand-up comedy routine.

"If you've ever had (and lost) an argument with your coffee table about whether or not your neighbor's oak tree was trying to kill you, you might just be insane."

It was supposed to parody Jeff Foxworthy's "You might be a Redneck." I wrote like 20 "You might just be insane" jokes.

But I digress.

Keep exploring the museum. What's next?

There is a Room of Lost Creatures which shows the various genetically engineered beasts that the Ten Systems Empire had, but the exiled  Imperials all about you, do not.  Pet creatures such as the Hopping Bird and the Furry Friend stand next to hunting creatures such as the Lesser and Greater Targets and the Great Threat which stands next to the Earth Digger which is below the Solar Ray which eats stellar dust and soaks in sun in outer space.

A sad looking hologram man explains.

"None of these were able to be taken with us.  But in the new world we will escape too, we will build the vast industries needed for these creations.  But for now, in our time in this world of exile, we hold on to the genetic data to be taken out of cryostorage and used to build new herds of Hopping Birds."

Steam engines and metal forming presses and lathes form steam tech.  And for other things, they have Power Crystals.

Steam engines but no electricity. I could draw a schematic for a power generator. I could build one. Is there anybody around here that works on the steam engines?

Maybe I could sell somebody the designs for an electrical generator and make a few million quid in the process? See about that. After the museum tour.

You find the patterns of the schematic slipping your mind.  For some reason you can't focus on them.  Its immensely frustrating.  You KNOW you know them, but....aaargh.

The last room if the Map Room.  It shows a too scale map.  From viewing it, there is a two hundred mile circle of cleared land with a dozen small villages, and one major town (yours), and a dozen times a dozen Towers of Sensitives near the edges of the Woods.

The small towns are Barracks for troops to quick march to the Edge when needed to serve as Trade Villages.

Along the walls are paintings of the different types of Trees with their various abilities such as expelling a cloud of fire resistant foam and needle throwers.

Might be interesting to acquire seeds for some of those..... Next world if I can Order/Chaos them...... Could be interesting.

Too bad about the generator. It's just uh, what? Magnets? No, it couldn't be magnets. Copper wire? Or was it zinc wire? No, that can't be right. Eh, I could have built one in my sleep when I was in high school.....

Hey Tadeusz, I just wanted to ask you something about our play style. Magehammer at all times wears a toolbelt and a backpack full of random supplies. Is it safe to say that, as far as you're concerned, he's carrying every single piece of his gear at all times?

The Magehammer that I run as referee, his backpack and toolbelt are four dimensional, infinite storage hypercubes. In short, they connect to alternate universes. He can keep literally as much of anything inside them. Size and weight of the objects are meaningless. He's got armored cars and tanks and jeeps and rigs of every size inside one pouch on his toolbelt. In another pouch, he's got the entire contents of the Fort Knox gold repository.

I don't expect it to get that extreme in our game, but is that kind of the concept you're working off of here? My backpack and toolbelt are four dimensional, infinite storage hypercubes and I can carry all of my gear at once?

Just wondering.

OOC: Yep, biases are low.

The trees have normal storage.  Other things, well, if I did a bag of holding, it would only have limited storage.  More like a closet or two than a full other world.

There is the Great Gate, which is not yet half-built but work goes on it steadily.  Its already a hundred feet across with its crystal circle being twenty feet thick, and an odd blue color.

There is a short line of people donating 'mind energy' into a large crystal.  Other such crystals are being put up, already charged, but this is for the random passerby who wants to help.

I that case, I think I'll forego the cheating at Poker. On a side note, these powers are so much more fun when nobody else has them.

I'll just stay here and enjoy the show. Get some food, listen to the music, see if any pretty girls want to talk, that kind of thing.

They and six other people take you on a group outing to a comedy at the amphitheatre.  Despite no electronics, you can hear the actors on the stage clearly.  And what shocks you, and then has you almost rolling on the floor is how funny, and sharply clever the play is.

The characters are believable, sensible, and etched very clearly, and the whole thing has you gasping for laughter a couple of times.  Everyone else is in the same state as you.

Some of the jokes you don't get because of specific cultural references, but otherwise you're fine.  And at the end of the play (and its intermissions of juggling and gymnastics) the others are commenting on the play with clever comments, and then you're startled to hear that this is a second rank play company.  If it had been filmed on Earth, it would have been Best Comedy of the Year and Best Film.

Clockstoppers didn't actually freeze time. The people were just moving so fast you couldn't see them. Chaos magic could do that. I wonder if psionics could do that? Anyway, I want something like that. Either freezing time or moving so fast that it's like that.

What are the rules? What can I carry, what can I interact with? Sometimes there's rules on that.

She gives you directions very quickly to one of the swoopily curved blue crystal skyscrapers.  Upon arriving, you find that only a few stories are the Sensitives.  Taking the steam powered elevator, you enter the office area.

Its open plan with desks with many of them having crystals, and others holding documents as the people work on either crystals or on papers.  They crystal workers seem happier, while the paper folk seem to be glumly determined.

And then all of them look up at you at exactly the same time.

After a few seconds an office door opens, and a tall, thin man with soft hands but a set of piercing eyes steps out, and looks at you very closely.

"Well, this is a surprise."

Leave that open on his desk and leave the building.

Just walk around town checking out the frozen state. Try to move people around. Move their arms and legs. Can I carry them? Can I move them? Really I'd like a person whom I am in contact with to come out of the time freeze. Once I let them go, they go back to frozen.

But once I see things for what they are, unfreeze time.

Freeze time again. Inspect things. What's different about the light? Is it only touching people that I drop out of time freeze for? How much do I have to touch them? Just brush against somebody? Or do I have to actually make contact?

How long can I leave time frozen? Go home, take a nap. Is it still frozen when I wake up?

Two Posts

This is a link to an episode of The Twilight Zone 1980s. This is the effect I would want my time freeze to have. The video will say it's over an hour long but it's really only about 24 minutes. Check it out if you would. You might need to rewind it back to the beginning. I don't know what happened there.

You almost seem to notice a space of time between the shadow caused by your movement and the existence of the shadow.

Trying to move more than twenty five pounds total, not counting yourself, puts you out of time freeze.  Touching any living thing, even brushing them does it.   So, when you tag an insect, it knocks you out of time freeze.

By the time you're home, its unfrozen.  The limit seems to be about twenty minutes to thirty seconds.

IC) I'll have to practice this time freeze some more. That's not gonna do for what I want to do with it.

Go to the local bank. See how they're set up. Could a person who has frozen time rob the bank and then walk out without being seen?

Yeah, go to the bank and just stand back and watch for a while. When I think things are right, freeze time, enter the vault and grab 20 pounds of money and walk away.

This is gonna be fun!!!!

With time frozen, go around to the local outdoor restaurants. Pour drinks out on people's heads. What I'm imagining is the drink will stay suspended upside down in the glass until I unfreeze time, then fall on the person.

But go around doing things like that. See what happens.

Takes the gun I got from that security guard. Go out somewhere somewhat secluded and freeze time. Then fire the gun into the side of a hill. What I'm expecting is the bullet will freeze as soon as it leaves the barrel, only to continue on once I unfreeze time.

Wipe off the fingerprints and leave the gun on the ground. If I'm lucky, the authorities who examine this will conclude that it was a bank security guard who shot them.

OOC) I said I pulled my 9mm yes? I think after a while, Magehammer would switch to revolvers and manual action weapons. Reason being, revolvers and manual action weapons are much less finicky about what ammo you feed them. Straight cased, manual action weapons (Revolvers, lever action, pump action, bolt action, single and double barrel weapons) would be much easier to find ammo for. Only the diameter of the case matters, not the length so much. So he's probably carrying a large-caliber revolver instead of a 9mm automatic.

Your targets look human.

You open up with the AK on #1.  The cloth is some sort of armor, and it reduces the impact, but it is not up for stopping five bullets.  He goes down and stays down.

The other guy whips around, and takes a hasty shot. A dart punches into your left lower ribs below your heart.  He takes a mo to switch to burst fire...

The pain is not too bad.  It seems to be a very fast, very light dart with a spinning motion and the tail fins make that chainsaw noise as it goes thorugh the air.  It is half in you, and half in your jacket.  Evidently a needle like dart is pretty good for armor piercing.

Shoot the guy, then pick up his gun and examine it. Make sure I know how it works.

I'm walking around dual wielding an AK and one of their guns. Screw this. I'm shooting anything that moves. Ever seen the movie "Rampage: President Down" or any of them? Not the one with the giant monkey. This is a guy who runs around town in body armor dual wielding AR-15s. That's me right now.

So I'm just walking around shooting anything that moves. Screw em!!!!

In reply to JohnA1nut (msg # 129):

You hit him in the arm. He hollers, and fires back one handed.  Its a clean miss.  You shoot back, just tagging him in the leg, spattering other bullets into the ground.  One handed, one legged, he misses wildly.  Laughing, you miss as well.  His gun jams.  You shoot him in the chest, and end it.

Looking at his gun, you see its an extremely light weight battery powered dart slinger.  It does not have the line of magnets, but just one magnet.  It has forty more darts.  Its white, and made of some odd material that is tougher than it feels, but not by much.  You'd never want to use it as a club.  It has auto, burst and single shot.  The trigger is a button.  It weighs, without the darts about ten ounces.

Impressed in the side of the hollow stock is 'Ten Stars Republic'.

So it's a Hi-Point carbine. (If you ever saw on of those, you'd agree it pretty much matches the description.)

I'm just going to go around town AK in my right hand, dart gun in my left. Open fire like a lunatic from Vietnam on anything I see moving. Screw this!!!! I have no idea who the enemy is. Some victims will have bullets, some will have darts. No one will know who was shooting.

IT'S THE PURGE BABY!!!!!!

You run up on some locals hiding behind a crystal wagob and shoot at the first, but he ducks suddenly.  The other you rip apart.  The first sees you, and runs. You fire at him, and he jumps out of the line of fire as if he knew where you were going to fire.  He continues to run away.

Assuming I survive this, take their guns and extra ammo.

You chop the guy on your left to doll rags in two seconds, and the guy on the right gets splattered by many bullets.  The one on your left is dead before his knees buckle, but the one on the right had time to open fire with a stream of autofire as he fell sideways.  Then he hit the ground and died.  You were not hit.

+@1 to gunfighting.

You take their gear, which is good because you're running short on ammo.

You follow some noise, and see one local and one invader sniping at each other from behind wagons about fifty feet apart in a street.

If the AK is empty I'm just gonna leave that on the street. Pick it up later, maybe even in the next world. Not disowning it. Just leaving it behind for the moment.

Grab their guns and start dual wielding those.

When I see the invader and a local going at it, shoot the invader, then ask the local if he needs another gun. Ask him if he knows what's going on here.

This is the kind of thing I'm prepping for in real life. Ever seen Red Dawn?

He has a look of utter surprise on his face as he falls back dead.  You wander onward, step around a corner, see nothing but a burning wagon, and then several darts hit you in the back.  As you fall, you see a man in blue armor cloth with a white gun step out of an alley down the street from you.

OOC: Yes, that was an observation botch.

I'm wearing a backpack. Did they go through my backpack? Or did they hit me somewhere else?

Freeze time, get up, pull out the darts. Walk straight up to the guy approaching and shoot him with time frozen.

Then psionically heal myself and repair the clothing.

I think I'm going after the blue guys. I've chosen a side.

You accomplish your time freeze, and splatter the attacker.

With time frozen, walk around and see if I can find out where their headquarters is. The blue guys. Where are they located and attacking from?

If I find it, I've got grenades on person. Find something to blow up.

You find a HQ of sorts.  A small street with a commander giving orders to several others, a staff officer, and two obvious bodyguards.  They are standing in the middle of the street.

And as you get closer, a buzzing begins to pierce your skull.

That's never good. Does it get louder the closer I get?

If I can withstand that noise, sneak into the camp and set up tripwires with grenades. So that it would pull the pin when the wire is tripped. Then leave.

If that buzzing sound gets too loud, figure something else out.

Yes.

And no, you can't.  I think.  You go forward a bit, and you're pretty sure if you advance much further, you're going to lose your psi skills.  Its some sort of psi static generator.  You see two of them have some sort of metal sphere like a grenade hanging on their belt which you feel is the source.

As you remember, the Imperial Exiles had psi, but the Commoners did not.

OOC) I think I've decided that Magehammer's primary weapons are going to be a 50 caliber revolver and a 50 caliber, lever action rifle. They take the same ammo, Six and twelve shots, respectively. Both base lethal. A manual action weapon would be much easier to find ammo for as opposed to an automatic. Manual action weapons are not nearly as finicky about what ammo they're being fed.

I realize there is no basis in Da Rulezzz for this, but it's just my thing. So, if the referee has no objections, Magehammer is dropping the 9mm and AK-47 in favor of a revolver and a lever action.

And on that note, I'm going to draw my 50 caliber revolver and shoot those spheres off their belts. How does that feel?

OOC: I don't object to you picking up these weapons if you find some, but no to any retcon or magic glitches.  If you have some in your backpack, and my bad memory forgot that, then its fine, but they do need to have been there.  Again, no glitches.

You line up with your 9 MM, and aim for a metal sphere.

Bam. It spins loose, sparking, and you feel relief.

Bam. You nick the other one, but its still connected to the belt, but non-functional.  They seem to be rather flimsy devices.

Your psi is good to go.

Timestop has ended to do this.

The bodyguards speed draw with impressive skills, and two darts head your way from their white rifles.  One grazes your left hand, almost taking off a pinkie finger.  The other hits you in the chest in the middle of armor, and bounces off.  The staff officer is getting in front of the commander to protect him, who is trying to get in front of the staff officer to get a shot at you...

OOC) I own both of the weapons I mentioned, but don't have them on me. Next world I'll start carrying them. Cool?

Put a couple 9mm bullets into him. See what he does then.

You hit him the top edge of the shoulder and along his arm, just grazing him, and he fires back, missing you.  But one of the bodyguards focuses, and you can see it coming, and it rips into your chest near your neck, just above the armor.

It feels hot, then cold, then just bad.

Bam. You shoot. Miss. And a dart bounces past your nose.  And Bam...hit....you've versed out.
