NX-01 Tadeusz

As the fireball consumes you, you are instantly propelled at warp speed. Stars are rushing towards you. Then they abruptly stop. You hear a voice. "Commander Tucker to Security. We have an intruder in Main Engineering. I think it's one of those Borg creatures."

And as you sit up to look around, you're looking at Captain Johnathan Archer, Lieutenant Reed, Commander Tucker and about a dozen Starfleet and MACO security officers all pointing phase pistols at you.

Captain Archer demands "Just how did you get onboard my ship?"

They relax just a touch. Only Commander Tucker lowers his weapon. He pulls out a tricorder and begins scanning you.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Reed says "Captain, I don't believe he is a member of the Borg collective. I've never heard of a single Borg drone speaking on its own. The skin pigmentation is all off. They're generally more pale than flesh tone suh."

Commander Tucker is staring at the tricorder in disbelief. "Sir, he's right. His energy vibration is off the scale. Not like anything I've ever seen. And that's not any kind of Borg armor we've yet encountered. It's some kind of ablative micro tech. I'd bet you it could take more of a beating than our polarized hull plating. I'd love to get a sample of it for analysis."

Captain Archer says "I bet the Borg would too." Then, addressing you "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't toss you out the nearest airlock."

Lieutenant Reed says "That's not a very good idea suh. Remember what happened when we threw the two Tarkaleans out of an airlock."

Archer kind of moans. "All too well. This war began."

Then everyone just kind of looks at you for an explanation for what they should do.

OOC) This is based on Star Trek Enterprise episode Regeneration. Two partially assimilated Tarkaleans get thrown out of an airlock. I started to think about what would happen if they were picked up by a passing ship? It's well-known that the Borg can survive in deep space. So you've got partially assimilated drones working with 22nd century technology. The Borg are still quite formidable, but they're grossly under powered from the ones seen in Next Gen. Knowing how to make the tech is no good if you can't get or fabricate the parts to do it.

"I do not serve the Borg Collective.  I am a servant of the One, True God."  Take that and put in your pipe, and smoke it, ya' atheist dweeb ST writers, I think to myself.

I stand to my feet.

"If you want me to walk out the airlock, then I will, Captain Archer." I twitch my face in what is meant to be a very small smile.  Hopefully, I call his bluff and remove a club he could use over me.  And if I'm wrong, then this is a sort of Federation where they would do that, then I'm not sure I should help them anyways.

I stare at them calmly and wait.

They all tense up as you stand. But when they see you're not a serious threat, they seem to relax a bit.

Commander Tucker says "Sir, with your permission, I'd like to take him to sickbay and have Phlox take a look at his armor. Run him through the imaging chamber. We should at least do that before we toss him out the airlock."

Archer considers. He turns to Lieutenant Reed and says "Malcolm, take two of your best men and escort this gentleman to sickbay. See what Phlox can tell us."

Malcolm says "Ruiz, Diaz, you're with me."

And a couple of heavyset Hispanic women step out of the mess of MACO guards with weapons trained on you. Malcolm seems to have selected not his best and brightest, but his most expendable.

OOC) Ever watch Orange is the New Black? That would be Maria Ruiz and Dayanara Diaz.

So, Archer and Tucker lead the way, the three security guards follow from behind. You are lead to sickbay.

Doctor Phlox looks you up and down with a puzzled look on his face. Tucker and Archer explain what they want. Phlox just says "Certainly sir."

You are told to lay down on the biobed. It goes into the imaging chamber. Once the imaging chamber is activated, you notice the energy counters on all of your armor instantly jump to full charge.

Once released, Phlox looks at some scans and begins spouting off a whole lot of technical jargon that nobody really seems to understand, but the gist of which seems to be "That armor could be a major game changer in the war with the Borg, if you can help us replicate it."

Phlox looks puzzled. He says confused "Federation?" He looks at Captain Archer and says "Do you know what he's talking about Captain?"

Archer is equally confused. "Our organization is called Starfleet. There is no...... Federation."

OOC) Do you watch Enterprise? Archer was one of the founding members of the Federation, yes. But this is years before that.

"And a glass of ice with water would go down well too."  I'm hoping to see one of the matter formers in operation.

No ice, but he gets you a glass of water from a regular faucet.

The protein resequencer is in the mess hall.

Commander Tucker says "Now down to business. What can you tell me about this armor of yours? Starfleet, the Vulcans, Tellerites, Andorians and even the Klingons have all lost dozens of ships and hundreds of people to the Borg. If we can't stop them soon, we won't be able to."

Archer says "The two Tarkaleans we blasted out of an airlock were picked up by a passing Tellerite freighter. The crew was assimilated within hours. Fortunately the Borg do not have access to their original technology. They're forced to adapt what they find. And there's only so much they can do to improve it. They've inhabited a number of small planets and moons in the Andorian and Tellerite systems. They're contained for the moment, but that could change at any time."

They're seriously asking for your help with this armor tech.

Continuing, they say:

Archer "So far, the Borg haven't managed to assimilate anything very large or powerful. We've been lucky in that regard. Freighters, transports, shuttlepods mostly. Nothing they could transform into something with a top speed greater than warp 5.3."

Tucker says: "Their ships are cubical in shape. Generally hold between 8-10 Borg. We're certain they could build something more powerful than that if they could get the technology."

Malcolm Reed says: "They can adapt to almost any conventional energy weapon. The Klingons have found out that they are, for some reason unknown to us, unable to adapt to melee attack. The Klingons wield a half-moon shaped sword called a bat'leth. Very few Borg have survived an encounter with a Klingon warrior who was so armed. We've been working on different projectile weapons. The theory is that if they can't adapt to melee attack, they probably won't be able to adapt to projectile weapons."

Phlox says: "Yes, the Denobulan militias who encountered them reported something similar. I had the opportunity to examine a corpse of a Borg killed by a projectile weapon. It was most....... educational."

Commander Tucker: says "Unfortunately that only works on individual drones. Their ships adapt to much more."

OOC) That's my own personal theory. If they could adapt to melee attacks, they would. They never do. If they can't adapt to melee attacks, they shouldn't be able to adapt to projectiles. What's the difference? One is big going slow, the other is small going fast.

After this, Phlox kind of turns away. When he turns back, his eyes are a bit misty. He pulls you to the side and says seriously:

"A Borg battleship attempted to invade my home planet. The planetary defense forces in orbit managed to cause it to crash land in one of the most populated areas of the continent. The eight Borg who survived attempted the assimilation of dozens of my people before the local militia defense forces could be mobilized. Our militias still use what would be considered 'primitive' projectile weapons. Fortunately Denobulan physiology is most resistant to assimilation. We were called there because I had devised a most painful treatment for it, when I myself was nearly assimilated. My second wive's third co-husband was killed in the invasion, trying to protect My Beloved Feezal from a drone."

He seems to be pleading with you to help his people.

Duh. I don't remember my Star Trek Trivia that well.  Oh well.  These folk seem to be good people, so I will help them, in return for something that will also help them.

"OK, I will help you with armor, but....I want something.  A warp capable ship, with heavy armor, and an armored coupling, and light power lasers.  The  light power is because the real weapon of this ship is the Marines on board.  I need a team of fifteen to twenty big guys, skilled with axe and shield.  I want to board and take over these Borg cubes."

Archer kind of giggles at your suggestion. "I don't think you understand your situation here sir. You were caught trespassing in the main warp engineering room of an NX class starship. Right now, you're looking at charges of treason, espionage, illegally boarding a starship, and anything else they can think of. You can either help us examine your armor, or you can spend the next twenty years in Leavenworth federal prison while we examine your armor. You really don't have much room to negotiate here."

At this, Archer says: "I think you might have misunderstood me. I don't have the authority to give you a warp-capable starship. I doubt Starfleet could even spare a J class cargo hauler. If your information is good about this metal, and if we can design ship's hulls with it, then, maybe, you'll get your warp capable starship and your trained marines. For the moment though, you are in our legal custody."

You can punch him at any point during that speech, but if that changes anything, then the following is nil.

quote:
And then I change my mind.  I punch Archer unconscious, and then go for the next guy, not attacking Phlox, but making sure not to let him sneak up behind me with a night night drug.

Okay, I might need to set the stage here. The armor is a breastplate, belt, shield, sword, and boots. I'm assuming from what you've said that the sword and shield are hanging from your belt or not on your person. The breastplate is a breastplate. It does not cover your back at all. Your back, your butt, your thighs, and your left arm are all exposed.

Ruiz and Diaz took up sentry positions at the doorway. Lieutenant Reed stayed with them. He made his statements from the doorway.

So you swing at Archer. And just as your punch is about to connect, you feel three white-hot railroad spikes get slammed into your back. The guards have three-way stunned you.

When you wake up, you are armor less. You can feel the scriff sense to it. You are in the decontamination chamber. DECON for short. It's all white and sterile with two beds that lay facing each other. There's also a toilet and sink. And a larger area with tables and benches so that groups of people who were waiting in DECON to play cards and whatnot.

When you sit up to look around, you see Phlox sitting outside a clear window. He's waiting for you to wake up.

"Ah good, you're awake!!!" And flashes you a mile-wide grin. "That really was a very naughty thing you tried to do back there. The captain wanted me to inform you that we are taking you back to earth Post-Haste. Your trial should be swift."

"I also wanted to inform you that I have complete autonomous control over your environment at the moment. If you act up......"

And he pushes a button on a console. It releases just a whiff of something which is immediately clearly some kind of sleeping gas. In a larger dose. He hit you with just enough to let you know.

And he just stands there at the window, smiling.

Gotta go with the inspiration.

The armor is ablative micro tech. I think ablative means it spreads out the impact of whatever hits it.

Full suit of armor on, you beat a piece of iron with the hammer until it is extremely highly insanely magnetized...... for a fraction of a millimeter. Which is to say, you might get stuck to the walls if you're not careful.

The armor beats the iron into simple nanobots. Ever seen Big Hero Six? Something like those, but microscopic. Held together by millions of pounds of magnetic force, for a tiny little distance around each one.

It can change shape, density, weight, size, on command.

Any thoughts from you? I'm making this up as we go along.

What would you say if I said I wanted to rule that you did hit Archer? I mean, really, you said that first. I know you didn't really mean it, so I gave you the out. But what if I wanted to rule that you did hit Archer?

By the time Phlox wakes you up, they would have studied that armor enough to find out your punch probably would have been lethal. Archer would have forgiven a bare-handed punch, but now you're looking at attempted murder of a Starfleet captain as well.

What would you think of that? It's not like you're going to die of old age.

OOC) No, I think we need to clear that up. I'm not going that way, unless you absolutely insist. I was just asking what would you think if I did?

So, we'll make this a Choose Your Own Adventure.

If you do not swing at Archer:

Archer makes his speech about building ship's hulls with this material.

If you do swing at Archer:

You're in the DECON chamber talking to Phlox.

So, where are you? This is totally your decision. I was just asking what you would think of that.

I'm sorry, but after specifically saying you weren't going to stop until he was unconscious doesn't amount to pulling your punches. I'm not buying the "I'd pull my punches" bit. Sorry.

By now, Lieutenant Reed would have discovered that the gauntlet could put a fist-sized dent in a two inch thick sheet of transparent aluminum. They're not going to buy pulling your punches either.

But still. The choice is yours.

At this, the entire room grows obviously perturbed.

Commander Tucker says angrily: "You don't get it. Cargo haulers are the first thing the Borg go after if they're flying anywhere near their space. We've had to put our entire NX deep space program on hold indefinitely to shore up planetary defenses."

Lieutenant Reed "The one good thing to come out of all of this is the Andorian Imperial Guard and the Vulcan High Command have managed to put aside nearly a century of disputes. They're one against the wolf."

And Captain Archer says "Please, will you help us with your armor technology?"

And he literally drops down onto his right knee when he asks. A quick glance at the other two officers has them also dropping to their right knee. They're literally on their knees asking for your help.

OOC) Episode Observer Effect. Two Enterprise crewmen get infected with a unique kind of virus which had been encountered by the Klingons. Somebody asks Archer if he would ask the Klingons for the cure if they had developed one, to which Archer replies "On bended knee."
