Erdthar Grimear:
I'm old, I played D&D when it was three little 8.5 x 5.5 folded paper books in a white cardboard box. When the Greyhawk suppliement came out with the druid class and more spells, it was a big, big deal, pimply High School kids drooling at more, more, more D&D stuff...
OMG, Erd... did you really just go there?
I used to play with a loyal Dave Arneson group that would only use the first three books. Greyhawk was considered to be sacriligious because of the legal battles being fought out between Arneson and Gygax at the time.
Just some memories..
1) Arneson is the Diety of RPG, but mannnnn, as a DM...
He was really, really into seeing how many characters he could kill off in one game session. I played in his games at conventions as well as in person. The group would vote to play some Squad Leader or Kingmaker instead of playing, "Fantasy," with Dave.
2) Martians from the wandering monster tables? Wow, I loved John Carter of Mars books, Classics indeed.., but my Dwarven fighter squaring off against a Six Armed, Red Martian.
3) Exp progression, Doubles every single time, every single level it doubles, all the way into infitium. I think my original level 17 Fighter had enough exp to be an AD&D, 2nd Edition AD&D, 3rd D&D 50th level fighter.
H'mmm kinda lost my point now..,
