Missing character sheet

Went to check my character sheet because we're just about to launch into a combat only to find that it stops about halfway through. Did all the usual fixes (refreshing page, deleting cache, etc.) to no effect. Even my GM couldn't see the remainder of the sheet.

As the final option I could thin of, I attempted to go into the edit screen to see if that made any difference and maybe I just had to resubmit the information, without any success.

Now, my biggest question is: am I going to have to type it all out again, or is there something else I can try before resorting to that?

Missing character sheet

In reply to Crovexius (msg # 1):

Not sure if you'll be able to recover - that might be something an Admin has to help with?  (Not entirely certain.)

One of the reasons I use spreadsheets for "official" character sheets is that I control where they are stored, and updates/data losses to RPoL don't affect them.

It's more work for me as a GM, but I update concise format character sheets from those spreadsheets as they get updated.

Something you might do is build your character sheets in a plain text editor (e.g. Notepad) and then copy/paste character data to your game.  It's an extra step, but will prevent a recurrence of this kind of thing.

Always have a backup plan.  That way you can only be pleasantly surprised.

Missing character sheet

Please send an rMail to the Site Moderators, with a link to the game, and the name of your character.  Then we can take a look and see if we can spot any issues.

For example, some special text characters used by word processors can cause issues with RPoL pages.

For the record; RPoL has had data loss once in 17 years of operation, and that was when the server we were on suffered a catastrophic disk failure.  This was over ten years ago, we got back all our data from a copy made less than a day earlier.

We create nightly backups for disaster recovery.  Generally free cloud services have very complex, redundant and geographically diverse systems but don't actually backup your data.  There's been numerous instance where client data has vanished and the unfortunate response to that is "sorry" and that's about it.  Take from that what you will!

In reply to jase (msg # 4):

It's good to know RPoL has a good backup plan.  That is actually impressive these days.  However, it doesn't excuse me from taking primary responsibility for backing up my data wherever it may be.

Maybe I'm being "belt-and-braces" about it, but that beats losing stuff that is hard to replace without a backup.  I'd rather make your backup plan one more layer or component of my overall backup plan than not.

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.  That way all your surprises will be pleasant ones.
