Yeah, it was down for a good bit yesterday, too. I don't think as long as it was today, but I'm surprised there was no word from the admins.

I would assume if there was going to be some kind of site outage for maintenance reasons, a post would be made in the RPOL Announcements forum, since that's the one thread no one can remove from their list.

They don't directly control the servers, they pay for them.  So they don't have the ability to foresee problems.

That's a given, for sure. It's just kinda odd no one acknowledged yesterday's outage. *shrug* It's whatever, though.

In reply to GammaBear (msg # 7):

Actually Jase addressed it in community chat.  He said it was a "Hardware fault", but it sounded like he pulled off a software fix. and He needed to get on the provider about the problem.

Alas same issue I think.  I'm currently investigating a new server and am trying to find a good deal with a reliable hosting provider.  Netdepot, our current provider, have looked after us well but I have heard reports of how the business isn't what it once was due to it being sold.  The jury is still out on a final decision and though the clock may be ticking I don't want to rush my decision.

In the meantime I'll keep a close an eye on the server as I can!

Thanks Jase. For the update. You have put in so much over the years to develop and maintain rpol. Thanks and salute.

A Question for Jase:

Are you guys co-locating, does your provider actually provide hardware, or are you on a virtual server instance in a cloud somewhere?

(I would think your system has some rather stout hardware requirements, just on the face of it, to handle the database load you must be maintaining.)

In reply to horus (msg # 17):

We rent a dedicated server.

VPS was something I considered going forward but I've pretty much ruled it out.  It's a really risky proposition, you just don't know who else you'll be competing for resources for and if you're unlucky (in one of several ways) you can end up with a subpar experience.

Yup.  Kinda figured you'd been that route.  Co-location would give you more control over the server (it'd be your hardware) but that also entails more maintenance and greater initial outlay.  As with all things, it's a trade-off, and I'd bet you've already worked the numbers.

Is there any other way besides Paypal to contribute and support any upcoming move (be it to new hardware or a new host)?

SiteGround.com has a Cloud service which I've had REALLY good luck with.

It can automatically scale based on your load.

I've got two REALLY big clients (multi-million dollar E-commerce sites) on this service and I've not had a single minute of downtime.

Also, if the server you're on goes down, they automatically migrate to a new server for no downtime.
