Can characters be renamed?
I set up a game and added three people who had shown an interest by generic placeholder names, while we discussed details of the game.

When the players choose an actual name for their characters, can I rename the existing characters, or do I need to assign new characters to the, with their chosen names, and then delete the placeholders?

You can rename the existing characters.

GM Menu > Edit Characters > Edit/Rename (- Edit an existing character (name, tag & groups))

And make sure the box is ticked that says: Same character, different name.  Preserve all the existing character information.

There's more to it, and it's one of the things RPoL does that other forums don't.

As GM, you can rename someone's character, post in a thread as that character, then change their name back. The player will have editing access to that one-time character, because technically it was theirs all along.

Can characters be renamed?
I've been here a long time, but I didn't realize that little trick was possible, LonePaladin.

Is it possible to change multiple players' names to a single new name, allowing everyone to post as a specific NPC?

This is something I've wanted to do for a while.

Say I have a redshirt called Joe attached to a unit. Can I use each 'character account' once to post for Joe, so that for the rest of the game anyone can post for Joe?

Can characters be renamed?
Interesting question ...

LonePaladin's mileage is how it was intended to work - Fred the Fighter might become Sir Frederick ... and then has his knighthood revoked so he's back to Fred again ... behind the scenes, I'm guessing that because it's all under the one character ID the player has edit access to the older posts - as far as the code's concerned you're just posting as that character ID, no matter what name is currently hanging off it.

Now, I've just had a bit of an experiment and I was able to add an NPC and two characters to different players, all with the same name so a) there's no error trap on identical names, and b) they should all be able to post as that character ...

... but per my speculations above, I'm guessing each player's "Joe" would have a different character ID attached, so while they'd be able to edit their own post (under their Joe's character ID) they probably won't be able to edit posts made as Joe by other players (using their respective character IDs).  Which probably doesn't matter anyway.  :>

Thanks Skald, that's very useful. No, I don't need every player to be able to edit everyone else's 'Joe' posts, provided they can all make future 'Joe' posts, and they can edit their own previous 'Joe' posts, that's great.

Are you sure they can do future posts? Sgt Fury can post as either Sgt Fury or as Joe at will, or does the name have to be changed by the GM every time they want to post as a different character?

It's pure conjecture on my part, of course !  'Undocumented feature' would be how I'd put it.  <grins>

IF it does work ...

... no, all you need to do is set up every player with a secondary character called Joe (IE keep their respsective main characters as primary) - then they can each select Joe when they want to post as him without GM intervention.

Please let us all know how you go too !  :>

You could try running a session of Everyone is John, and give them all the same name. Private lines and PMs would probably get wonky, though.
