To look at the man, he isn't much.  It isn't until he moves that one understands that he is a truly dangerous person; it isn't until he speaks that one understands that he is smart and as comfortable talking of philosophy, politics, and trade, as he is at being on campaign or on the battlefield, leading his legion.

The only indication of rank that he wears is a seven pointed black star that is embroidered on the breast of his dark red overtunic, though it is hard to see from more than 10-12 feet away.  The sword and mace hung on his belt are workman-like and show scars from hard use.

His only adornment are a silver bracelet or two, perhaps a momento from a battle or a gift from his lover or wife.
