Steven Michael Fenris entered the Army at age 21, after having decided that college life was not his future.  Growing up in Perth Amboy, New Jersey,  Steven had worked around engines at his father garage, developing a natural skill for fixing vehicles. He spent his summers hunting with his family, and  his uncle a former Army Ranger, who taught him about survival in the wild.

After High School he struggled with community college, and  worked in the garage,learning more about vehicle maintenance and repair.  He was invited to a friends graduation at Fort Dix, NJ, where he stumbled upon the world of tanks and HummVees.

Enlisting at 21, he entered the armor divison after basic infantry, and progressed rapidly with his mecahnical apptitude. Becoming a tank commander, he was shipped overseas, and found double duty in both the motorpool and on the battlefield as skilled profesionals became scarce. After the Nukes started flying, he was needed more in keeping the tanks running instead of driving them. It was a circumstance he welcomed as fewer and fewer tanks returned to base.

Eventually, he found himself helping out the medics by driving a meat wagon late at night. Keeping himself busy made it easier to sleep at night, and avoid thinking about what might have happened back home.

As the war progressed, he struggled to keep his unit running, having to modify parts and salvage wrecks. When his unit finally crumbled, he took off, using his skills to try and find his way home.
