With a name like Chance, you know you can trust him with dynamite.  Slightly bookish as a youth, he came into his own when he enlisted in the Union Army.  His basic philosophy is that everyone has a right to freedom, including freedom of choice.  He's a devout Methodist who hates to miss a Sunday sermon.
