“Coop” (as he is usually called, though he also answers to Al) is a lean but well-built man, used to working outdoors at physical jobs.  His hands are callused from hard work and he has a couple of scars on his arms and chest, some from his time in the army and others from elsewhere.

He speaks with an accent that is a blend of his lowly English roots and the years that he has spent living in America, trying to make his fortune.

Over the years he has been a sailor, a soldier in the Union Army, a miner, a labourer building the railways, a cowhand, a brewer, a prospector, a barman and most recently a delivery man.  He wasn’t very successful at any of them, often just earning enough to allow him to move further westwards, and Coop is still trying to find that big score that will make him rich.
