Welcome to Star Trek: Gamma Quadrant

Lt. Cmdr. Derek Talon

Name: Derek Talon
Race: Human
Age: Late twenties
Rank: Lieutenant Commander
Position: Chief of Security

Physique:  Tall but stocky. His rugged face has the faintest hint of a scar extending from above his left eyebrow down to his chin.  He keeps his face neatly shaved, otherwise the scar is pronounced through his beard.

Personality: Derek tends to be sarcastic and irreverent, though he treats those he works with respect when they need it and jokes with them to keep the atmosphere light. He is a bit verbose, tending to talk more under stress. When he sees a problem, he tries to find a solution right away, rather than let it fester and get worse.  He's got a bit of muscle, and works to stay in shape, but he's not muscle head. His goal is to get respect, recognition, and credit for a job well done.

History:  Derek is the third son of a pair of semi-famous explorers.  Tom and Martea Talon had a small ship that explored new systems looking for the 'mother lode' that would make them wealthy.  While they charted and classified over forty-seven different systems using their tiny, Warp 4 capable craft, they never really found it.  The residuals on their exploration kept the craft well stocked with supplies - especially education materials so they could train their sons to 'take over the business'.  When Derek was 'of age', they sent him off to apply to Star Fleet Academy.  Their plan was for him to learn cutting edge technology and bring his formal training with him after his six year hitch.

During his sophomore year at the Academy, his parent's, their ship, and his two older brothers disappeared.  Gone.  Just like that.  They were exploring a far off stretch of the Gamma Quadrant, and assumed dead.  Despite the loss, he graduated in the middle of his class, and requested a berth on a deep space exploration vessel.

Ensign Talon ended up on a Science Vessel, the USS Dougherty which was on a doomed mission at the edge of explored space.  It took several YEARS just to get to their exploration zone, and when they did, they encountered failure after failure.  The commanding officer, Captain Lucas Downs, and his command crew were butchered during a first contact meeting gone awry. The ship was then attacked, and the next highest ranking officer, Lt. Commander Ackers, along with the remaining bridge crew, died in the fight out of the trap.  Despite the surprise attack, the crippling of command and control, and the relative weakness of a survey ship, the Dougherty seriously outclassed their opponents in technology.  Talon ended up second in command, though with only four officers left, that was a dubious distinction.  Luckily, Lt. Donovan, a classmate of Talon’s, had graduated at the top of his class and was regarded as a tactical wizard.  While Donovan talks up the ‘dedication and strength of the crew’, Talon knows that if it weren’t for Donovan, they’d surely all be dead.

The four surviving officers and the remaining thirty-eight crewmen managed to limp the Dogherty back to Federation space.  It only took six months before they found a Federation vessel able to tow them faster than warp 2, and they returned home with disgrace and failure mingled with survivors’ guilt.  Despite their losses, command acknowledged their bravery, initiative, and daring and the surviving officers were commended for salvaging what they could of the ship and crew.

Recently promoted to Lieutenant Commander, Derek Talon is now the Chief of Security on DS10.  His duties for the past eighteen months generally involved acting as a bouncer at the station's bar, keeping hooligans from stealing vital components from the station's systems, and manning station defenses during routine drills.

His new duties involve a certain amount of administration, organization, coordination, and delegation.  Still young and full of energy, Derek likes to get involved as much as possible.  It is not unlikely for him to personally arrive on scene during a security issue.  When he is the only officer on the scene, he takes immediate control. When a subordinate officer arrives, he would like to use the situations as an opportunity to observer and support his team; however he has had some difficulty adjusting to his role.

In his off times, he drinks heavily but quietly, staring unrepentantly at the security teams sent to 'keep him out of trouble.'  Outside of the big bender he went on after returning home from his first mission, he never gives them any trouble.  He spends too much time on the other end of the phaser to bother security officers doing their job.
