Carly Bennett's dad was a police officer that was killed in the line of duty a couple of months before she was born. Her mom never remarried, so Carly is an only child. She may have lacked a dad and siblings but, her large Irish Catholic family made up for that with cousins and uncles. Most of the Bennett's choose to go into either fire rescue or law enforcement, and Carly is no exception. She followed in her dad's footsteps and became a Detective for the Chicago Police Department.

Carly and Jack Jennings grew up in the same Chicago neighborhood and were high school sweethearts. They got married when Carly was 21. They were both ambitious about their careers so they put off having kids. They had their rough patches, like any marriage, but things were mostly good. After about 5 years they began to talk about finally starting a family. That's when things went sour.

Jack was a reporter. He used information he learned from eavesdropping on his wife to save one of his informants. Unfortunately, it led to the deaths of some police officers. Carly knew Jack never intended for anyone to get hurt, but he had crossed a line. The marriage did not survive the fallout. They split up a little over a year ago. A part of her still cares about Jack, and she does not wish him any ill but, she believes leaving him was the right choice.
