Very little is known about the man calling himself "The Shade".  Although he is registered with the government as an active Super Hero, he has no known alias.  There is no social security number associated with this man, and his face has never been seen.  He has no background, and no hometown, family or friends.
He was first documented as a John Doe at a hospital in Nevada.  He awoke with no memory of his past life and shortly thereafter registered his abilities.

The Shade is a master of darkness and substance.  His natural state is that of an incomporial specter with bone thin appendages, which he barely ever lets show choosing to keep himself hidden beneath his robes.
