 Jon was born a twin the winter of 1975 his mother died in child birth from complications, probably did not help that they were snowed in at the time.  His father needing to earn a living left both boys in the care of his parents and worked extra shifts as a mechanic.  Jon at a early age took to watching and learning his way around a shop- loving machines as much as his brother loved horses and their care.  The family always said that on had their foot in the future and one had their foot in the past.
When Jon came of age he joined the military and worked his way into the SAS while his brother worked his way in to the Royal stable and is still there as caretaker to the animals serving their in.
Jon lost his eye when his platoon was ambushed during the wars among the nation previous to the crash of the robotech ship.  Most of his platoon was almost whipped out but a string of flash grenades he had been working on blinded the enemy combatants and allowed the few still standing to bring the combat to an end.
When the call went out for the crew on a new space platform Jon volunteered.
He has training in not just macha, but chemistry, weapon and ammo production and mechanical engineering.  But most people mistake him for the crabby old grease monkey he portrays, eye patch stubby cigar- rarely noting that the old colt pistol strapped to his hip seams to be supporting more tech then a teenagers wet dream.
