Name: Kayley Mae Durant
Nickname: Mae
Age: 21
Birthplace: Oblitus (A small village of little interest and zero importance to the Crown. Full of the poor, the downtrodden and the forgotten.)
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Title: Baroness Kayley Mae Durant

Hair: Kayley's hair is the colour of a ravens feathers. Black as black can be, it does not absorb light like a shadow but reflects it like an oil slick. Kayley's dark tresses shimmer when captured by the right light. At times her long soft waves can appear anywhere from chocolate hued to a deep dark mauve.

Eyes: The Ladies eyes are the colour of freshly picked mint, flecked with nutmeg and encircled by copper threads. Kayley has a deep and penetrating gaze that often reveals more than she intends it to.

Physical Description: As a young girl, Kayley was unremarkable. That is not to say that she was not attractive. The Midwife did not gasp when she was born nor did children tease and chase her for resembling a stray dog. Kayley was pretty enough but she was nothing special. Though this was due more to where she was born and what she was as opposed to what she looked like.

Kayley was born into poverty and for it she will always retain a hint of something that is different. It could be said that this little speck of inequality is visible only to herself. Regardless, Kayley feels it. She has not been sheltered or raised on marble floors with silver spoons. As a child Kayley often went without food. For this she retains a slim and supple figure as her body has adjusted to working with little food and function on even less sustenance. What food she takes in is absorbed quickly leaving little time for the retention of fat.

The Ladies skin is pale like porcelain. To her benefit, the look of dark hair and pale skin is quite fashionable and Kayley is considered to be a great beauty. Her powdered fair skin however is due not to make-up or alteration but to a lack of proper vitamins and an insufficient source of sunshine. The child was not forbidden to venture outside but her home sat deep in a gully where the sun must fight through a thicket of trees to reach those struggling bellow. There was a time when the small child would be covered in mud, her dark locks twisted into a braid around the crown of her head but tangled and teased beyond combing.

It has been 13 years since Kayley left her small village of Oblitus. Plucking the young girl from the grit and the despair has drastically altered her appearance. One would be hard pressed to find any signs of her origin. Kayley now holds herself with greater pride. Her full height in bare feet is 5'7. She is always fastidiously groomed and wearing the finest clothes. Everything from ocean blue to ox blood red looks fabulous against her procaine flesh. Her dark locks are washed, brushed and styled to perfection. The Ladies soft skin holds a constant scent of mint, cardamom and sugar-cane. Kayley is hardly the girl she was at birth and though such a statement could be said about anyone, for Kayley, it could not hold more truth.

Distinguishing Marks: Kayley possess a birthmark on her right collar bone. It is shaped like a half moon that sits slightly on its side. Around a fingernail in diameter, it is a distinguishing feature but not so striking that she may be known by it or for it.

Personality Description: In the past, Kayley has been known as free-spirited, caring and sweet. While these traits have not completely left her, they have been overshadowed by a harshness that has been injected into her veins by those who would see her do their bidding. Kayley will often project an austerity that can make a grown man pause. She can be arrogant, self-serving and defiant.

Kayley was not raised among the rich and the oh so very Noble. She was not taught about rules and manners. She knew nothing of hierarchy, politics and etiquette. None of it meant anything to her. As a Commoner, Kayley's soul goal was survival. She struggled to find work, shelter and food. What those born on clouds did during their day to day lives was of absolutely no importance to her. Just as she was sure that what she and those like her got up to meant nothing to the Noble's.

There were times in Kayley's youth when she was happy. She had little, so she wanted for nothing. What she did not know, she did not miss. The young girl's life was full and bright when she got a meal to fill her belly at night and when the sun rose again in the morning. What more could she possibly need? It was not an easy life but it has taught her hard work.

Having been taken from poverty and tossed into a pile of gold and silver pieces, Kayley has been forced to adjust and adjust quickly. She may have Noble blood flowing through her veins but she did not look nor did she act like the Lady she was expected to be. Years living among those who had once looked down their noses at her has changed the young woman. She has been forced to play her role and beneath her harshness and that flicker of something dark behind her eyes, lays fear. Though she refuses to show it and more than likely is less that aware, Kayley is afraid. She is afraid that one day she will be found out or worse, that she will be weighed, measured, found wanting and tossed back into the pit of poverty from whence she came.

Historical

Characters History: Born into the arms of a family who lived on the bottom rung of society, everything was against Kayley from the start. Truly, little was expected of her other to grow up happy and healthy. She was not burdened with the responsibility of inheriting land and titles. She did not have to be anything other than who she was for nobody judged her as anything less than a street urchin.

Before her birth, Kayley's Parents shared a home with four other families. They did what they could to survive. Plague took many of the older and weaker members of the Village so what little crops they had grew unattended and without proper sunshine and sufficient rain, they eventually withered and died.

Upon her birth Kayley's Parents were forced to leave their home. While the people of Oblitus cared, what were they to do? The young baby was simply one too many mouths to feed. The other families of the small home had their own children to worry about, their own issues that weighed heavily upon their shoulders.

So the small family of three left. Out into the cold they ventured once more. Kayley and her Parents scraped by as many people did. At 4 she watched her Father leave for work only to receive word of his death a year later. Kayley's Mother did all she could for her Daughter. Hope arrived when the young girl was 8. People were talking before the man was ever in sight. Word of his reputation had indeed, proceeded him.

The visitor to the little town of Oblitus was clearly a High-born. The upturned nose and brightly coloured robes said as much. He was in search of staff for his Family's Manor. Many of the young men were piled into the back of a carriage as were several of the more attractive women. Kayley's Mother was among them and after proving to the High-Born that her Daughter was strong and willing to work, Kayley was allowed to come along.

The next 8 years of the young girl's life were spent in the service of a Noble Family. Her Mother eventually rose to the rank of head Handmaiden and was responsible for all the Lady of the House's affairs. Kayley was given smaller responsibilities but expected to work just as hard and that she did. Kayley toiled night and day for a Woman who was arrogant, cruel and to a small child, utterly frightening. Once more, the young girl was allowed to see the truth of the world. She had not been born with the right blood flowing through her veins and for that, she was less than. Less than respect, less than wealth, less than love. Or so she thought.

From the age of 8 to 16, Kayley grew inappropriately (according to some) close to the young Lord of the House. They began as friends but slowly grew to be more. He treated her differently. She wasn't the servant girl or the little rat as her Ladyship liked to call her, she was just Kayley. In secret, the two would come together. Her friend taught her how to read and to write but most of all, he taught her that she worthy. Kayley became worthy of his time and his attention. She became worthy of his kiss and his love.

Happy endings are for plays and poems though. In a routine rotation of staff, Kayley and her Mother found themselves out of a job and homeless. She never got to say goodbye. To this day, Kayley is unsure what her lover knows in regards to how or why she left and where she is now. His Mother could have told him absolutely anything. She returned to the gutters. Where else could she go? Very quickly, Kayley watched her Mother pass from a diseases that she could not stop. On her own she did the only thing she could do and that was carry on. While the young girl scraped and clawed for every meal, thousands of miles away, her fate was being planned.

In a world she knew nothing of, in a Home larger than she had ever seen, an old man was dying. Upon his death bed he called for his Holy Man and to him he made his last will and testament, along with a confession. 16 years prior, when travelling on business, he had fallen into a dalliance with a commoner. With his business done, the man left the town and his dirty little secret behind. He had considered it done and never looked back. Secrets have a tendency to become unearthed however.

Not a year later he received word that he had a Daughter. What shame he must have felt. A bastard child with a commoner. What would his wife think, his Maker? After much contemplation, he chose to do the right thing. Surely the girl would be better off with her Mother and the man who believed he was her Father. He thought nothing of the fact that they had nothing and that his only child would spend her life struggling to rise above the chains of poverty.

Never again did he think about his sin nor his Daughter. Not until he was old and facing the Maker's warm embrace. Upon his deathbed he considered his life and was faced with the truth that with his death, his name would also die. He had no children, no one to carry on his name and his legacy. It was his final wish. His men would locate his Daughter and to her, he bequeathed it all.

Instantly, without ever knowing it, Kayley became a Baroness.

It was a strange day when the men on horses came for her. Fearing the worst, Kayley resisted but was eventually subdued and brought back to people who had more patience to explain it all to her. Truly, for weeks Kayley thought that she was being fooled. She had seen the cruel jokes that Noble's played and assumed this to simply be another. The staff of Durant Castle bathed and groomed her but it took months before Kayley began to hold herself differently. It was over a year before she began to fully sink comfortably into her role. With hundreds of people to whisper in her ear, Kayley began to learn and to change. She was a Baroness and she finally, began to act like it.

Kayley's barely remembers her small village of Oblitus. In all honesty she has locked away any memories she had of the place. She chooses not to think about it, to dwell on them. That part of her past is best ignored. It has been Thirteen years since Kayley Mae Durant first left the streets of Oblitus. Five years since she inherited her title and her power. She looks back, only in her dreams.

Show no weakness. That is what she is told. Rumours spread like wildfire of course. People gossip about the girl who rose from the gutters to the glory. To some she is a folk tale. To others, she is an abomination. Kayley, like all Noble's has been summoned to Rosemount by her King. She is,... curious.

House: Kayley Mae Durant is the only child and heir to all that Minor House Durant has to its name. She was bequeathed her Father's title, his land and all the gold of his vast treasury. In his name, she conducts his business, leads his people and watches over his land all for the glory of their King.
