Mildred is the village's only school teacher and has been for as long as anyone alive can remember, molding young minds from the makeshift school room she has converted her house into. She is firm but fair and teaches mostly through stories and object lessons than with actual books, although she insists on teaching all of her children how to read and write.

Her husband of nearly fifty years passed two years ago, and with all of her children grown and out of the village many thought she would be soon to follow. It seems however that the old teacher is just to stubborn to die.
