Jacques was born and raised on logging camps in northern New Hampshire. His father worked as a surveyor for the logging companies and taught young Jacques the trade at an early age. Jacques stayed in the camps and prospered as he grew into adulthood. When the war came he volunteered for and was accepted into Berdan's Sharpshooters an elite Union Unit. He saw action in countless skirmishes and every major conflict the Brigade took part in. By the war's end, he was a respected veteran who had lead his squad through many conflicts. Memories of the war haunt his thoughts, especially in times of quiet. His constant chatter, and humming are one way to keep the silence at bay.

After the war he purchased his own equipment took up contract work with the railroad. He helped to survey passage through the mountains for several branches of the Southern Pacific out of California. During that time, he met Carlton Abernathy. News of plentiful work in El Paso reached Jacques while looking for new work in Sacramento. The railroad arranged travel for Jacques and assigned him to surveying the best potential routes for their line through El Paso.

Jacques packed up his gear and departed for El Paso within a week. With him he has taken his gear, his three mules Daisy, Buttercup and Aster as well as his black mouthed cur named Tilde.
