Lysander Kendricke Arkaine

Artwork by Andrew Ryan
"Many leaves, one tree."

Lysander is generally handsome, in an everyday kind of way, with unruly, dark blond hair nearly to his broad shoulders, the narrow waist of a warrior, and noble posture. A number of large battle-scars mar his dusky skin, although they are generally in places on his body that are easy to keep covered—mostly his torso (which the employees of the Black Orchid embarrassingly refer to as "self-chiseling"). He does not really have a beard, but nor is he clean-shaven; rather, he has a charming, rugged sort of scruffiness, as though he is always just between shaves.

His most memorable features are his missing left eye—always covered by a wedge-shaped metallic patch that is magically contoured and adhered directly to his face—and his missing left arm, replaced with an enchanted metal prosthetic. The former captain is a quiet, soft-spoken sort, rather introverted and given to his privacy; his speech is heavily accented with the lilting, musical brogue of Cormyr. He prefers solitude and rarely laughs or smiles; his good eye, steel gray and solemn, reflects the memories of a past he would rather leave behind.

The Cormyrian prefers to dress in simple clothes that do not restrict his movement, but is also prudent enough to keep his old armor on hand, and is never unarmed. He travels light, with a well-worn leather utility pouch strapped to each thigh and only a few modest pieces of jewelry, all of them gifts or spoils of war: The golden serpentine chain that holds a star sapphire to his brow; two rings on his right hand—one, a pair of interlocking silver fish with tiny sapphire eyes, the other a plain band of living steel—and a golden bracelet on his right wrist, decorated with mithral filigree in an ancient elvish style and twin to the one worn by Trendal. The inside of his right wrist is tattooed with a list of words.

On the field, Lysander is not usually one for speeches or inspirational slogans, but rather the sort to lead a charge or duel enemy officers man-to-man. Not so when forced into small missions that require infiltration and stealth; it is almost as if a different person emerges, a deliberately cold and unfeeling assassin of deadly pragmatism and lethal speed and accuracy. His qualities of loyalty and self-sacrifice might remain unchanged, but Lysander the Greencloak is not the same kind and quiet man as Lysander the farmer.

As a Councilor, the one-eyed warmage makes it clear to all in Freehold that he expects the community to function using at least some of the same values as a good military unit: Loyalty to one another, dedication to the town as a whole, and adherence to the decisions made by Freehold and its leaders.
