Towering well over six feet and lean as a willow, the raven-haired, unfailingly polite manservant Gray hovers ever near Lady Elesine and young Lyrum or at his Lord Lazard's shoulder, always silently awaiting his master's orders. Dressed in fine but reserved servitor's clothing—black frock, shoes, and trousers over scarlet vest and tie, silver shirt, and shockingly white gloves—Gray seems never to forget a name or a face and excels almost mythically at anticipating the wishes and comfort of the Lazards and their guests.

When he shows any expression at all, Gray always favors those he serves with a small, social sort of smile that sets others at their ease. He never intrudes and is always quiet as a ghost and spot on time, as a good butler should be.
