Marjyan Cristina Mahfouz is the Egyptian-born wife of Alexander. She was educated in England, but found that like so many women of her generation that her lot in life limited the uses to which she could put her intelligence and creativity. She is a Muslim but not devout, and devotes her time to social causes like helping the poor of Cairo.
