Mr Henry Gordon Jago is as large a character as his name suggests.

His face was large, jowled, and florid. His nose had the redness that came from drinking too many bottles of ruby port and good, British beer. His paunch indicated that pies and puddings had accompanied the drink, and in good quantities. His eyes, however, suggested intelligence - and a ready wit. In his forties, perhaps, as his hair was only just starting to thin at the temples, and was still a good, dark brown. His clothing was the opposite of his compatriot. Ostentatious, almost ludicrously so, his garb was that of a younger man trying to be fashionable. On him, it seemed far too much, but he did not appear to mind one jot.
