| Heritage & back story: Father Irish Immigrant : Rowan "Pat" Murphy Mother Japaneese American : Naomi Ran Uncle Irish Immigrant: Finnegan "Fin" Murphy Cousin Irish American: Charles "Chip" Murphy Rowan "Pat" Murphy came to America when he was 16 years old. He had no family in America other than his cousin Fin. Pat worked as a day laborer to get by & found himself doing anything people would pay him for. He worked hard and hated every minute of it. At the best of times he only made enough to scrape by, & he paid the price with his back. Fin was a gangster and offered Pat the only work Fin had ever known. At first it was simple things like picking up payments from degenerate gamblers and businessmen the Irish were extorting. Soon it evolved into beating up the deadbeats that didn't have the money to pay, robbery & finding new illicit revenue streams. For Fin, being good at this occupation meant that money kept rolling in. Fin gave Pat a cut of every score Pat helped him with, and within a year, the amounts started to become substantial. Pat started to think he was living the high life. He blew through most of his money on booze, jewelry, girls and drugs. That was when he met Naomi. . |  |
Naomi Ran was a dancer in the strip club that Fin had a silent partnership in. She had dropped out of college and moved to the city looking for love and adventure. She was pretty, agile and knew how to show men a good time. Sometimes she would sleep with the patrons, but only if she really liked them & they had the money to pay. When she met Pat, she was impressed by his confidence and the way he handled people. It didn't hurt that he threw money around like he was printing it; she certainly loved money. Knowing that Pat liked her, and that he was close to the boss, Naomi agreed to blow him in the coat check room on their first date. 5 years later Naomi & Pat were living together. By that time, Naomi had worked her way into the business, and it turned out she was brilliant. With Pat as the brawn, Naomi as the brains, and Fin backing them up, the team was unstoppable. When Naomi told Pat she was pregnant, he was so happy. She wanted to terminate it early, but Pat liked the idea of being a family man. After a few months of living the dream, Pat decided he didn't like being tied down. He started staying out later than usual, and finding excuses not to come home. His drug abuse and cheating became rampant. When Naomi complained, he started smacking her around. Naomi felt trapped. She reached out to Fin for help. He warned Pat about his choices, and how it was starting to effect his work. Pat promised to do better, but had no intentions of stopping. Instead he learned to cover his tracks better. |  |
Over the next 5 years, Pat's behavior got more and more out of control. He beat Naomi regularly, and managed to separate her from her friends and family. Even without her help, Pat was a good earner, and, Fin let a lot slide. By the time Akemi was 10 her father was mainlining Biker Meth and PCP. Naomi tried to take Akemi and run, but Pat held her down and injected her with Heroin. It kept her sedated and pacified , so he kept doing it until she was so addicted that he didn't have to force her anymore. By that time, Pat was becoming so paranoid, and delusional, that his erratic behavior showed up in his work. Fin came down on him hard to try to get his attention & Pat resented him for it. In what he saw as a preemptive strike, Pat attacks his cousin one night in an amphetamine induced rage, cutting him across the face. Fin retaliates by beating Pat mercilessly, ultimately breaking 8 of his back ribs and damaging his spine severely. It's an encounter from which neither of them will ever recover. Afterward Pat found himself cut off. No favors from the organization, and no jobs come his way. This cut his income to nearly nothing. He convinced Naomi to sell herself for money to maintain her habit and his. She made enough to sustained the family for a few years, but it couldn't last. Naomi was worn out from the years of drug & domestic abuse. Her arms were covered in track marks, her face gaunt, and her body withered and thin. That's when Pat turned to his young and healthy daughter. At first he had to hold her down to inject the junk into her arm. But like her mother, hard drugs made Akemi pliant and willing. He kept her strung out and hooking for 2 years before one of the Johns with a guilty conscious reported the situation to child protective services. Akemi was taken away (much to her father's protestation) and put into a rehab for teens. After that she was moved around from foster home to foster home. The trauma of what her father did to her haunts her still. As soon as she turned 16, Akemi found out that her mother was dead (at the hands of Pat). She dropped her father's last name, going instead with that of her mother. At 18 she was kicked out of the system and left on her own. Rather than let her live on the streets, her Uncle gave her the opportunity for steady employment. Fin not only treated her like family, but taught her a trade. His only son Charles ("Chip") was an experienced Cat Burglar & taught Akemi everything he knew. Fin provides his niece protection from her father & a lucrative occupation. In return she does what she's told & cuts him in on every score. |  |
| Other:Akemi Ran has been trained in hand to hand combat thanks to her mother's insistence that she learn Ninjitzu, Kung Fu & Akido. Naomi knew the kind of world her daughter was going to grow up in & made sure she could take care of herself. Her Cousin Chip has taught her how to shoot a gun & fight with a knife. They are her primary means of defending herself if unarmed combat won't do the trick. |
