Kalin is the child of Khana and Suhliin, the brewers.  Most of her brothers are in the brewing business, or have settled in other towns as part of a growing family distribution network.  However, her parents decided to do something different with Kalin.  From an early age, Kalin was interested in herbs and the woods, and so they had her apprenticed (with Mahda's approval) to the herbalist (now Bessa Ahan).  Kalin has picked up some of Ahan's dryness, but she's still her mother's daughter and not at all ashamed of a long and hearty laugh or a show of affection. She also likes a good drink and can be as bad as her mother when intoxicated.

The village considers her somewhat of a hero, because, back in the day, when three children got lost in the woods, worrying everyone sick, she tracked them down and brought them back.  Nowadays, children are excited to see her return from one of her trips into the woods, trapped animals slung on a pole and herbs in her bag.

She also has an unusual amount of independence for her age, because of her woodsy chores and because Mahda trusts her.
