Description:
Master Robert Marke is the nephew and heir of Sir John Marke of Markham Hall, elder brother of William Marke, who is young Robert's father. Curious, clever, fair-haired, and handsome, Robert is a sensitive though well-adjusted child. Robert and his elder sister Marianne have recently come under the guardianship of Sir John while their parents are away in India.
A delicate woman, Elizabeth Marke suffered greatly during childbirth, and afterward she was unsettled for a time. From birth Robert has been in the care of his governess, Miss Catherine Rossiter to whom he is strongly attached. Upon William's and Elizabeth's departure from England, Marianne, Robert, and Miss Rossiter have assumed residence at Markham Hall.
