Battles is a hardcore no nonsense kind of guy, dedicated to his job as a Texas Ranger. He sports a patch over his left eye and wears a hard leather brace over his left hand from damage he took from a cannonball strike during the war. Once ambidextrous, he can still shoot left-handed because his fingers are free of the brace, but can no longer use his thumb to cock his revolver. To compensate he also wears a stiff leather band around his right wrist so he can "fan" back the hammer of his left hand revolver with his wrist, keeping his good right hand free to shoot normally. He keeps his hair long and is typically unshaven more than he is shaven, giving him what some consider a "scroungy" appearance but he doesn't care what others think. He usually wears a black "cavalry" style shirt with the flap open a bit and a black leather vest, trousers and boots. In contrast to the black, his Texas Ranger badge shines brightly on his vest, and he likes to wear his silver Mexican rowel spurs.
