Temperance Peters

Temperance is 25 years old. She has dark brown eyes and a mop of wavy curly black hair that she attempts to keep pinned up and out of the way. 5feet 6inches tall. Deceptively strong woman with a slight frame.

Temperance Lewis was born on a farm just outside the small town of Kensington, Michigan. The oldest daughter she was brought up to be her mother’s little helper. Cooking, cleaning and helping care for her younger siblings.

She started her formal education in the little red school house at the edge of town. A good student but never winning any math or spelling bees. Good grades was the most she could manage.

One thing that happened was attending along side her future husband Daniel Peters. His father was the owner of the local mercantile. Daniel was a star student. Famous for never missing a day of school. They grew up together and grew close as time moved on. He was convinced she was the only girl for him, while she came to see him as the only boy she could love.

Friendship lead to courtin’, courtin’ lead to an engagement and their engagement lead to the inevitable wedding. Just after her seventeenth birthday Temperance Lewis became Temperance Peters. And eleven months later twin girls, Emily and Prudence (named after there great grandmothers) were born.

The next two years were rather normal for the Peters clan. Going from newlyweds to parents seemed as natural as summer following spring. They were happy enough except for one thing. Daniel’s dream of being a rancher out west. The scrimped and saved but it appeared they would never afford to buy even a small track of land. That is until one day Dan heard about a farm outside a little town in Texas and bought it sight unseen. Of course both sides of the family were against the move. But Temperance believed in his dream and they loaded lock, stock and twins onto a train bound for Texas.

The farm of course was a disaster. A wind blasted old shack held together more by memory than nails. Located just at the edge of town. It did have a couple of outbuilding and a working well. After the first shock wore off they set to doing what the young and naïve always do. Working hard to make things better.

The first year the house was made safe and comfortable. One of the sheds became a chicken coop and the other a barn. They also acquired an ol’ one eared tom cat name Robert E, and a cow they called Bessy. They knew better than to name the chickens.

The second year started out all the better. The hens were laying regularly and the cow providing plenty of milk. So their butter and egg business was off to a good start. There was enough money to buy a horse. Then add a picket fence,  painting it and the house white.

Everything was fine until the Daniel rode out to speak to Kris Bein about some business and never came home. His body was found the next day just off the road. That was two years past, Temperance has made due as best she can.
