Ylaria and her twin brother Yvos were born of a Miralukan mother and an unknown human father. Their mother, a ship captain whose daring exploits against the Sith had made her somewhat of a hero, was killed several years after their birth during an engagement with the Empire. The children, both Force sensitive, were taken in and trained by the Jedi, whose ranks were much thinner after the purge. The need for strong leaders necessitated a faster rise through the ranks for them both, and they found themselves as Jedi Knights and taking on grave responsibility in their mid-teens.

Although twins, there is one key difference between the pair: Ylaria looks entirely human, though she has Force Sight in addition to regular vision; Yvos, on the other hand, lacks eyes and relies on the Force for his sight. His Force Sight is remarkably strong, but he is prone to migraines that sometimes make functioning difficult.

Yvos is more traditional in the Miralukan beliefs and ways, no doubt by virtue of lacking eyes, while Ylaria is a bit more capricious than most of her kind, and sometimes a little brash, no doubt taking after her human father's side.
