Katie attended Berkeley High and went onto undergraduate classes at Stanford where she majored in Pre-Med studies.  During her senior year she decided to switch majors and attended Berkeley University for Journalism where she graduated with honors.
She got an internship with the San Jose Sun and eventually earned a job with the somewhat less prestigious Oakland Tribune.  After 3 years she applied for a job on a local network news station (which she did not get).  When the Tribune had to cut back its staff, her boss cut her loose (basically because of the attempted to move to television news).  She tried to make it on her own as a free-lance blogger, but found that her dream was always just slightly out of her grasp.  She went back to school and got her certification as an EMT for the Cities of Oakland and Berkeley to pay her rent, and still writes blogs and online articles in her spare time.
Katie wants to break back into the News business, and isn’t very happy with her current employment situation.  At the story’s beginning she feels stuck.
