Background: Giavanna is one of three illegitimate daughters (each born by a servant woman) of the late Enrico Gonzaga, last son of the legitimatized bastard Vincenzo Gonzaga, of Alonzo Deigo d'Ersteni. She and her unknown siblings were orphans, and hidden in families by Grandmother South. Giavanna's mother died of childbirth complications three days after bringing her into the world. Giavanna does not which of the three house servants was her mother. All are now dead, nor where her two remaining half-sisters are.
Alonzo's family clashed economically, and politically 22-years ago with the now infamous (and also extinct) House d' Montague. The d' Montague's rose to power in the Trade Guilds using piracy, highwayman, assassins, poison, blackmail, bribery, and extortion to claim Trades Guild leadership 16-years ago. They in turn (the d' Montagues) were toppled/ driven from power, convicted and hanged by Chief Magistrate Gabriel Galardi, 15-years ago.
Giavanna became a Rogue at age 15, and eloped to become a Thief in a small gang which successfully preyed on street traffic, and odd-job one-off burglaries, and took two different lovers during this time. At age 19, on the eve of a "really big burglary, she quarreled with the leader, and left the band. They were all caught and hanged. Giavanna became Giovanni, and took up the d'Ersteni surname. She applied her skills and was hired (via Deceptions of being male, and nobly born) to the reputable City Bank of Ceraphinn. She was sexually harassed and later fired...meeting Prior Bertram d' Bertolo of the Temple of Mystra...
